I specialize in teaching about Music and how to play the Guitar.
In class, I always make the effort of understanding what are the goals and interests of all students, as well as their own skills. This way we can address the issues at hand more effectively and make sure the student never loses his/her interest and focus in music and his/her instrument. I believe that an honest and friendly relationship between teacher and student is essential for this exchange of ideas to happen more clearly and fluently, and so I do my best to make everyone feel comfortable enough to share their own thoughts freely.

About Me

My name is Gonçalo, I’m a young Portuguese musician living in Den Haag.
I explore several types of music such as alternative punk/rock, post-rock, contemporary jazz, improvised music, folk/singer-songwriter, etc.
What I love about the process of making and performing music are the endless possibilities that exist well within the grasp of anyone who really attempts to understand them. Not only this but, while understanding them, still wanting to create an interesting and unique voice and being able to reach the level of focus and entertainment (both at an intellectual and emotional level) that has the potential to “elevate” our minds and personalities. Basically, Music is true fun and entertainment.
The guitar is, for me, one of the most interesting vehicles for musical expression, given that it has immense sonic possibilities and continuously gives us, in so many ways, some of the most memorable, powerful and fun musical moments.
Teaching is for me one of the most intellectually engaging ways to pass on the knowledge I’ve gathered, while still learning from the students themselves. As I’ve mentioned, one of the things I find most important and interesting about music is the creation of a unique voice. The creation of this unique sound allows us to manifest our own interests and ideas about music and life in general in our playing and enjoyment of music. It is through this very attitude that I get to learn from the students and their personalities, and I believe that it is also something that makes students engage more with their own ideas and perceptions, which in turn makes them progress more.

Education

I completed the Jazz Guitar Bachelor's Degree at the Royal Conservatoire of The Hague and studied with teachers such as: Eef Albers, Wim Bronnenberg, John Ruocco Patrick Schenkius, Henk Huizinga, Johan van Kreij.
I completed the Jazz and Modern Music Bachelor's Degree at the Lusíada University of Lisbon and studied with teachers like; Ricardo Pinheiro, André Fernandes, Demian Cabaud, Mário Delgado, Vasco Mendonça, Gonçalo Marques, Desidério Lázaro.
I attended masterclasses from renowned artists such as: Lage Lund, Jeff Ballard, Enrico Pieranunzi, Joey Baron, Erik Ineke, Rory Stuart,Perico Sambeat, Guillermo Klein, Ohad Talmor, Dan Weiss, Miles Okazaki, David Doruzka, Matt Renzi, José Mário Branco, Carlos Bica, Frank Mobus, Jim Black, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Dave Holland.
Had some awards such as:
- The award for “Best Combo of Portuguese Music Universities and Higher Education Schools” in Jazz Fest of São Luiz, Lisbon;
- The Merit Award from Lusíada University of Lisbon consisting on fully-paid tuition for the 2nd and 3rd years of the Bachelor’s Degree in Jazz and Modern Music.

Experience / Qualifications

I give private guitar lessons to several students of different ages and levels.
I work(ed) as a freelancer and with several groups such as:
- Audio-visual project "Flowers/Ghosts & Echoes" with whom I released an album called "Drift Flux Change";
- Post-rock band "Then They Flew", with whom I recorded and released an album called "Stable as the Earth Stops Spinning";
- Comtemporary jazz group "Broken Circuits";
- and several others...
I’ve played in several venues like the Hot Club and São Luiz Theater in Lisbon, Korzo Theater in The Hague, WORM in Rotterdam, La Conserve in Leuven, and others.

A very good teacher with a lot of experience in teaching. He explains everything step by step. If I didn't understand something, he always breaks it into smaller steps and lets me practice until I get it. I will totally recommend Goncalo for beginners or also to someone who wants to get better at playing Guitar.

Celia
Professional pianist, Piano Teacher and Music Therapy student offer music and piano lessons in the Netherlands. Good quality :)
Piano performance & Music therapy Hello! My name is Celia. I’m from Spain and I’m currently studying Music Therapy at the Rotterdam conservatory. I recently become a Music Therapy intern at Florence, The Hague. I obtained my bachelor diploma in piano performance in 2016. I have performed concerts as a soloist, in duet with other pianists and in bigger ensembles/orchestras. Since I moved to the Netherlands, I’m also part of a music trio where we perform pop, jazz, arrangements and compositions from our singer. All these experiences together give me for sure a big capacity of working repertoire and understand the different needs of my students as a teacher! 🙂 As I’m in education as a therapist, I also use all my knowledge in combination with Music Therapy skills with all my students and especially with people who demand a different experience during a music lesson. Free and guided improvisations, active play, and receptive music therapy are some of the techniques I currently use. Music Therapy techniques allow you to play music without any knowledge of theory, so it’s very useful when in the middle of the lesson you need a break or when you just need to connect with yourself, for example. You can always have a trial session if Music Therapy triggers your curiosity 😉 Learn & explore During more than 10 years of experience as a teacher, I have worked all kind of people: children, adults, people with disabilities, families… I’m quite flexible and able to adapt my way of teaching to the circumstances! I like to work individually and in groups. Each way has its own advantages! In my lessons I use all methods I could experiment myself among my piano career; I’m also always open for new knowledge, repertoire and ways of working what my students may propose me. It’s fascinating how I never stop learning new repertoire and music styles thanks to my students! I try to offer music in a different way for every student according to their needs, with creativity and a relaxed ambience where the student can learn and explore. Each person has his/her own rhythm… which in my opinion is very important to respect. I also work with music theory, explaining concepts to my students from the pieces we play. I find this way is effective, instructive and much more motivating 🙂 In my lessons, we can work on classical, jazz, pop, arrangements, 4-hands piano music, improvisation and much more! Happiness Music needs a bit of commitment. It’s like a plant: a bit of water every day is much better than a lot of water just one day per week! However, every plant is different, and in the end, the important thing is that you feel happy and motivated during your learning process. This is also important for me, so for sure I always try my best to help my students in that aspect. The enjoyment of music (and everything) makes you learn much faster, don’t you think? Feel free to ask any kind of question! :)

Enthusiastic guitar tutor and performer. I started playing classical guitar at the age of 6, and my formal musical education begun at the age of 9 when I started attending a music school in Croatia. After 6 years of primary school I continued studying classical guitar at secondary music school in Varazdin, Croatia. During that period I received training in classical harmony, Counterpoint (polyphony), Solfeggio, Music history and gained plenty experience at orchestral playing and choral singing. I decided to continue my musical education in Manchester where I was studying undergraduate degree at the Royal Northern College of Music and currently I am studying at the Royal Conservatoire in the Hague. As a performing guitarist, I have successfully participated and won prizes in a number of international competitions in Italy, Croatia, Slovenia and Bosnia and Hercegovina. Although my studies are primarily related to classical music, I am comfortable playing and performing music in a range of other styles and genres. I am also experienced with mandolin and Croatian folk instrument called tamburitza.
