I take all students from beginner to experienced musicians (who often need coaching in deportment and/or bowing technique) and encourage proper traditional Irish style.

I teach aurally and written music using enough music theory to pass Irish state examinations in either TTCT (traditional) all levels, or up to RICM (classical) to level 4.

While keeping lessons lighthearted and fun the idea is to quickly build up a repertoire of tunes that allow the learner to 'sit-in' on sessions as quickly as possible while also learning how to learn so one can pick up tunes easily.
I myself have 7 All Ireland medals stretching from 1971 to 2001.

I've taken part in concerts, competitions & fundraisers from an early age - mostly as a musician or as the organiser of small events and simply love working with people.
Being involved in teaching (dinghy-sailing, archery & music) means I'm well used to dealing with people to motivate and help them see and develop a different outlook on life while learning essential life skills. I've always been considered a 'people-person' and have always enjoyed trying to bring people (young and old) to their full potential be it through music, outdoor activities or simply how to feel good about themselves. I believe the best way to each is to stimulate a spark for learning in the pupil and to nurture that spark into a flame of the love of learning that will outlast any school.

I'm a musician (mostly Irish baroque and traditional music) and a bow-maker for medieval war-bows (longbows) and give talks on the life and times of medieval archers.
I have a license to sail (commercially) all boats up to 20 meters and an advanced PADI diving licence and enjoy driving my Deauville 650cc motorbike.

I enjoy walking in nature and regularly take people with me on lead nature-walks, with a special interest in bat-walks and socio-historic trails.
I consider myself a life-long learner.

I have been a teacher in one capacity or another since I started helping out at the local music school as a teenager, and when in my twenties travelling Europe in a group I regularly gave conversational classes in the colleges we were performing in, and then also in Amsterdam University, where friends were taught. They, in fact encouraged me to take a TEFL Diploma course, and from then on, I have regularly taught privately, in the Netherlands or in Ireland, and for five years at the Youghal International School, Co Cork, Ireland.

I've also had experience teaching in (observed) classes in E.Germany, Hungary and BDR, before returning to Ireland where I've taught formally in primary, secondary and post secondary schools.

2000 - 2014: Managing and promoting our accommodation and music school while running it in a sustainable way, we won the E.U. Flower award, one of 125 in the world. Also short-listed for Tourism Business Challenge 2010. 2014 Green Innovation & Future Technology award for Outstanding Contribution to Sustainable Tourism; University of Bangor, Wales, UK. Glenribbeen Eco Lodge was awarded 4 petals (2010) in the Portuguese 5-Petal Eco Accommodation Scheme as recognition for our continuing work on developing Ireland as an eco-friendly accommodation destination.

I also take people on nature walks - with a special interest in bats, and I teach music, and medieval archery and simply love getting people to try to reach their full potential. Even whilst working as a tour guide I loved to teach songs to my guests as we travelled.

As many people wish to learn English to enhance their travel experiences I've designed this course around the language one may expect to encounter and use as one meets and greets people in various situations, from the airport to greeting the Tour Director, the hotel or attractions one visits.
As an experienced tour guide and teacher I have designed the classes to start with some ordinary situations where we will role-play and then start working up to more complicated and adventurist situations that are challenging but within the scope of the student. As a First Responder I have witnessed many situations where travellers needed to be comforted or even hospitalised. Practical advice, and knowledge of some specialised terms will be useful.
I tend to be light on homework but insist that it is completed, otherwise the class is held up. Regular feedback will help the learner feel how they are getting along and I believe strongly on encouragement and l will act positively when mistakes are made - the classroom IS the place to be allowed to make mistakes.

I have dealt with mostly teenagers and young adults over the years preparing for exams or in summer schools but I now prefer to concentrate on business, and conversational English.
Having recently completed the CELTA training (entirely on line with real students from Japan to Brazil) I like to follow a structured approach to lessons and have become very adept at using Zoom to teach with, though I am rather looking forward to get back into the classroom and teach in person.

TEACHING STYLE

I am a very patient teacher. I love teaching all ages. I don't teach everyone the same way. I tailor lessons according to individual goals and needs. I insist on the importance of technique and musicality.

I also guide all my students even outside of the teaching time, by responding to all their questions (music theory or technical) and sending them videos.

I teach how to prevent Piano Injuries by focusing on proper technique, posture, and practice habits.

My professional experience includes coaching students of all levels and ages. I successfully prepared the students for their Piano Exams, like ABRSM, Trinity Grade, from grades 1-8, with merits and distinctions, and more advanced exams as well (Performance Diplomas).

I teach for the Enjoyment of Music as well. I believe you can learn to play the piano at any age. My oldest student is over 75 years old, and my youngest one is 3 years old. They made great progress, and I am sure you could do the same.

I've never met anyone who didn't have musical abilities! You can be a serious or a recreational player. The only requirement is the willingness to spend some time at the piano.

I conduct my lessons using a combination of 4 cameras for optimum visibility, and a quality microphone which my students find very helpful. This allows them to see a very clear visual demonstration alongside my verbal explanation.

I can confidently say that Online Lessons are the same as In-Person Lessons.

CURRICULUM

I do not believe one method works for all students. I have used many different lesson books and resources over the years.

For beginners I like to use Alfred method books for basics concepts and for Classical and Jazz Piano technique I like to use ABRSM books (grade 1-8). If my student feels that they can learn better from another books, I am glad to adapt my teaching strategies to their needs.

Along with the lesson books below, I use a lot of supplemental materials based on the students' interests. I also aim to teach their favorite songs as soon as possible.

I like to clearly explain and demonstrate piano technique. In this way, the students are able to apply the information on similar passages from all genres of music.

I teach online via Zoom, using software which allows you to see the exact keys I'm playing on my keyboard.

My teaching method is to focus on whatever type of music the student loves most, and to build from there. I believe that many people give up their dream of playing an instrument simply because they aren't inspired enough, so my goal is to instill a love for music, whatever that means personally for each individual student.

Everyone learns differently and has their own pace and rhythm. I have some students who like to have a regular weekly or biweekly lesson, and others who just get in touch once in a while when they have digested the previous lesson and feel ready to build on it. Whatever the case, I am very flexible and we can figure out what works best for you.

A bit about me:

Originally honing my skills on the British jazz scene and holding residencies in restaurants and bars around the country, I then went on to tour the world playing on cruise ships, hotels and festivals. I returned to London to complete my master's in jazz piano at the Guildhall School of Music, and during this time performed regularly at Ronnie Scotts, The Vortex and many other venues across the UK. I then spent two years in South America learning about salsa and Cuban music. I now mainly work as a transcriber, writing sheet music for all instruments including full Big Band scores. I have also worked extensively in musical theatre, most recently as musical director for 'Jersey Boys', and on the first US national tour of 'Summer: the Donna Summer Musical'. The video shown below is from my stint playing and directing 'After Midnight', a show set to the music of the Duke Ellington Big Band.

I also worked as an assistant director of a conservatory (CRC) in the Paris region. Play the style you like: classical, modern, traditional, or world music—all songs are valid! We adapt them together, according to your tastes, your goals, and your level.

Together we can take the first steps and discover the instrument, explore sound and creativity, learn to express ourselves through the instrument and discover our own musicality, progressive technical exercises based on didactic works, to develop accuracy, mastery of the bow and sound quality. Preparation for auditions, exams, concerts or entrance exams to conservatories. Applied music theory to understand and interpret music in a more intuitive way.

My approach is open and adaptable: fun learning for children, improvement for advanced learners, or gentle resumption for adults.
I value creativity, musical curiosity and self-confidence, in a caring, motivating and dynamic atmosphere.

Each student progresses at their own pace, discovering or rediscovering the pleasure of playing, listening to and creating music.

Non ! ne partez pas ! c'est fou que ce que le mot "solfège" peut induire comme craintes. Les méthodes on changé, La formation musicale est mélangée à la pratique musicale dès le premier cours.
Et bien sûr, il faut un piano (les vrais, de bois et de fonte), pas de claviers au sons moches, au nombre de touches incomplète, en plastique....
