About Me

Rafael studied violin at the Seville Conservatory in Spain, his hometown. He then became interested in baroque music and went to study with Antoinette Lohmann at the Conservatory of Utrecht (Netherlands) and with Mira Glodeanu at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, where he also obtained his didactic master's degree.

He plays regularly with renowned baroque orchestras, such as Les Agréments, Les Muffatti, B'Rock or Scherzi Musicali. He is also very active in world music, with a special attraction for klezmer music.

Pedagogically influenced by different methods that he had the chance to come across in his career – Suzuki, Kodàly and Dalcroze – he brings these influences to his classes.

I propose a violin learning for all ages, without the need for prior knowledge of music theory and open to different styles of repertoire.

I did my Bachelor's studies at the Conservatory of Salamanca (Spain) as well as a Master's degree in Musicology and Aggregation at the University of the same city. Already in Belgium I continued my studies at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels by doing a Specialized Master in Violin and also in Baroque Violin.

In addition to my classical music experiences, I have also played gypsy jazz and flamenco and free improvisation.

My work is focused on listening (what to hear, how to listen well), expression (producing sound, what do we want to "tell" with his instrument through a given music) and sensations (posture , how to hold your instrument well ...). Hello!

Currently studying at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels for a master's degree, I have been giving violin lessons for adults or children for more than 10 years, for beginners or with experience already in the instrument.

Regarding children, it is from 5-6 years old (variable depending on the student) that violin training begins. For the youngest we start first with musical awakening (from about 4 years old and this can vary too) to introduce them to this wonderful world.

As much with children as adults, my lessons are always centered on a muscle relaxation essential to the progress of the instrumentalist. This will bring the instrument more comfortable and with better results.

In my classes I aim to transmit first of all my passion and love for music.
I like to prepare a personalized programme adapted to the level and exigencies of each pupil.
I also aim to include some violin duos, to be played with me during the lessons, as I believe playing with other musicians is one of the best ways to enjoy music and learn useful musical and technical skills at the same time.
Another essential factor in my classes is correct and natural posture while playing, to let music heal our souls instead of hurting our bodies! ;) I have been practicing Yoga for a few years, and have experienced the importance of good posture and targeted light stretching, especially for younger players in a phase of growth and change.
I like to help pupils to develop good technical skills in a fun way, always applying technique to targeted repertoire and keeping in mind that technique is nothing but a means of expressing ourselves through music.
