I specialise in tutoring European Portuguese to adults and teenagers. I provide lessons to students hoping to pass Portuguese exams at school and to adults learning Portuguese as a hobby or with the purpose of moving to Portugal. The classes are made specifically to suit each student and their learning style. I provide the slides and copies of the books after each session. I also assign homework every lesson and provide progress reports. From the first lesson, you can expect some of the focus of the class to be on conversation. This is because I believe the best way to learn a language is by using it, in this case speaking it. Whether you are an absolute beginner or an advanced speaker of Portuguese, I am prepared to help you take it to the next level! I am super excited to start teaching all of you and to help you on your journey to fluency in Portuguese.

I’m Ryan — and yes, in Portuguese it sounds like “LION,” just swap the LI for a HI. 😊 I’m a PhD language educator with over a decade of experience teaching Spanish, Portuguese, and Academic English at every level — from absolute beginners to advanced university students and professionals. I earned my Ph.D. in Latin American Literature and Culture from the University of Texas at Austin, one of the leading institutions for language pedagogy in the U.S. Since 2024, I have held a position as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. I’ve taught at major universities including the University of Michigan, University of Texas-Austin, Villanova, and Thomas Jefferson University. My experience includes everything from foundational grammar and conversation courses to advanced writing, medical Spanish, Portuguese for Spanish speakers, and culturally focused seminars on race, media, and society in the Spanish and Portuguese-speaking world. Beyond the classroom, I’ve worked extensively as a professional interpreter and translator in Spanish and Portuguese, supporting migrants, asylum seekers, educators, and public institutions. I’ve also lived and worked across South America and bring real-world cultural experience into every lesson. Whether you're: starting from scratch, preparing for travel, strengthening academic writing, building professional fluency, maintaining a heritage language, or refining advanced grammar and style, I tailor lessons to your goals with clarity, structure, and encouragement. My name is Nicolas, and I am a Brazilian Portuguese teacher with eight years of teaching experience. I have been speaking Portuguese for about ten years now. I learned the language while living in Brazil for several long periods, both for study and work. I am currently living there again. Having also gone through the process of learning to speak this language, I am well aware of the different stages my students go through. This helps a lot. My lessons are tailor-made to achieve personal goals and are adapted to the specific needs of each student. Practice is prioritized throughout the learning process in order to gain autonomy as quickly as possible. Grammar is also covered, depending on the student's level. This course is aimed at: - Beginners (basics, conversation, travel); - Intermediate/advanced learners (improvement, exam preparation); - Professionals (business Portuguese, interview preparation).
