Touch: While presenting steady time, we need to open our awareness to make our beat feel good. It’s an attitude. It’s about being musical. This means using dynamics and personalizing our four limbs to create our own unique groove. This is where it gets deep. I love teaching beginners. They usually can jump ahead quickly in a short time. There is no mystery. The way forward means dedicating a little (or a lot) of time daily to the drums. Even just 10 minutes a day can lead to significant improvements. That’s the secret. I recommend using an intensive approach with the classes. Beginners take 5 weeks of 60-minute classes to learn the basics and then continue working on your own, returning for follow-up “check-ups” as needed.
