Undergraduate Theology Tuition (Incl. Religious Studies and Philosophy)

This class aids undergraduate theology students in theory and material pertaining to their degree. I can help with the general and critical understanding of theory, as well as essay guidance and examination preparation.
I received an M.A (Hons) in Theology from the University of Edinburgh and I chose to specialise particularly in Islamic Studies and politicised religion, though I am happy to assist in covering all aspects of theology.

About Me

I am a young and energetic teacher who is academically-minded and enjoys discussing topics relating to literature, history, theology and politics. I like to keep my lessons discussion-based when grappling with ideas to ensure the students are able to think for themselves and articulate their understanding of a subject. In addition to this, I like to use writing, reading, performance and videos in my lessons to maximise the student's engagement with the topics, and keep it fun and interesting.

I have experience teaching English, IT and History at a prestigious boarding school in Lebanon, where I taught both classes of children aged 8-11 and one-on-one learning support classes for children aged 8-18. I also have experience teaching children with learning difficulties and naturally, I have received extensive Child Protection Training and DBS Certifications.

Depending on the level, will taper the English tuition to best suit the need of the English student. I graduated from the University of Athens where I attended courses in pedagogics, psychology, philosophy and linguistics. What can I teach? - I can prepare you for exams in pedagogics, psychology, philosophy, linguistics. - Psychology (developmental / school / clinical / social) - Philosophy (mainly ancient philosophy, e.g. Socrates, Plato, Aristotle) - Linguistics / phonology / grammar / syntax During my lessons I use : - Skype/Whatsapp/Messenger to connect with you, - Google Docs to keep notes, which you can check at any time and they are yours to keep, - sketch board me to make mind maps/diagrams to show connections between ideas, etc. I adore my profession and desire each and every one of my students be satisfied with the lesson. That's why I make sure the atmosphere is stress-free and nice. I also want my lessons to be as effective as possible. Therefore, I make sure they are well-prepared, although they can be altered at any point, should such an opportunity arise. I like explaining things in a variety of ways as well as make use of dictionaries, diagrams, etc. When it comes to students who want to obtain certificates, I am very demanding.

Xavier
REVIEW ESO AND BACHILLERATO (SOCIAL AND HUMANITIES). ENGLISH
BACHELOR REVIEW classes (Social, Humanities), English, Catalan, Philosophy, Literature, History ... AND THAT. More than 20 years giving individual and small group classes in English, Spanish and Catalan. Academies and online. My name is Xavier. I was born in Barcelona ... a long time ago. I grow up in this town, but now I live a bit far from here. I studied at the University of Barcelona and in Huddersfield (near Shefield, Halifax, Leeds, Manchester, Liverpool, ... not very far from York: quite nice places and better people), and I've been teaching Catalan, Spanish, Philosofy , History and English for a long time ... since I was 16. What happened? Very short, I promise: I was walking down the street two years ago, from just opposite this private school, and I thought myself: well, you might enter this place and see. I like English language very much ... and the UK, ... but I don't have a poster of the Queen on my bedroom's wall. It was a sort of a blind date. And there she was: her smile, her diligence, effectiveness. Eva listened to me. And after two weeks she was texting me for a class. "Please, Xavier, can you cover for some classes?" And here I am. (That was two years and a half ago, at the Academy English Studio where I have been an English teacher for more than two years, untill 13th March, when the lady in charge said literally that she would pass my 59 students to another teacher because I had no Internet at home, as I had recently moved to another town and had not had time to set the Internet, and nobody could have possibly known about that horrible and destructive confinement). More than 20 years teaching and learning with my students. Online classes. Spanish and Catalan teacher, too.

Sylvie
Private lessons in Philosophy with the pedagogy of deliberate practice
The philosophy in high school is centered on the great thinkers of the western region (presorcratic, modern Kant era, etc.). In my classes, I support you in learning the dissertation and mastering the high school program. . My pedagogy promotes "deliberate practice", a pioneering learning technique used in excellence programs. And approved by the latest research in educational science. It is about putting the apprentice at the center of learning. The exercises are repeated and planned, in order to progress with a clear objective. In this type of pedagogy, we work on motivation, then we establish specific but above all realistic goals. These objectives will be held with regularity and constancy over the course of the course with advice from me to encourage the student to progress. An openness to Asian and Eastern philosophy makes it possible to understand the great Western thinkers from a different point of view. Thus facilitating the deliberate understanding of the subjects addressed

Luke
First Class History graduate from the University of Cambridge offering tuition in History GCSE/IGCSE, A Level, and Oxbridge applications.
Having been home-tutored (as opposed to attending a regular school) throughout GCSEs and A Levels, I have a deep personal experience of works and what doesn't in regard to tutoring. The most important aspect of teaching for me is flexibility: I strive to adjust my teaching style according to how you like to learn, whether that is through images, through debate, through listening, or through games (which is still totally possible at A Level!). I think the best way to teach is to start with the student. What do you find difficult? What do you enjoy? What motivates you? Having answered these questions, I will then tailor the subject matter to the student. I can cater for almost any historical interest you may have, whether that is the ancient Spartans, the history of medieval Islamic philosophy, or twentieth century Indian politics. The average length of a lesson is around an hour. The first few minutes will centre around getting to know you or your child, followed by a a tailored lesson on an area both of us feel best suits your needs, and finally ending in a game-based revision of what has been covered. How do I help with GCSEs? I teach the general historical narrative in an engaging way through interactive games to provide the general background to students. I help students develop the core elements required in an A* IGCSE/GCSE performance: an understanding of causation, historical analysis, and historical evidence. In basic terms, why stuff happens and how we can judge if it really did happen! I also tackle the most common barrier to excellent exam performance: essay-writing technique. Throughout I ensure that students become or remained enthused by history through including unusual characters and stories that would not be included in the classroom, often the icing on the cake that secures an A* grade. How do I help with A Levels? I negotiate the difficult transition from GCSE to A Level History by encouraging students to dive deeper into the past and the issues one confronts when studying it. I help students with the hardest element in the transition, essay-writing technique, by giving detailed feedback on their essays and tips on planning. I advise students how they can quickly and effectively respond to complex primary and secondary sources. I also can teach more specifically to ancient history (having achieved an A* in Ancient History A Level alongside the standard History A Level), covering Sparta, Athens, and Rome. How do I help with Oxbridge applications? I encourage students to reflect deeply on the study of history in a way that I have learnt while at Cambridge. I inform students of the type of questions they will be asked at interview and how they can tackle them. I help students preparing for the Aptitude Tests by broadening their horizons of study to areas and times that excite Oxbridge fellows.
