About Me

As a teacher, my approach is progressive, meaning I am more a guide through a learning journey than an authority. I am careful to help my students to build up skills that will make them autonomous learners and value long-term learning opposed to short-term (learning for tests) learning. When teaching languages, I do my best to develop topics the students are interested in, therefore I listen to them carefully, take notes of their interests and find ways to pair linguistic notions with wished topics.
Usually, my lessons are built in the way that every students will be able to produce some work and then the improvement will come from my feedback.

Education

Bachelor with honours in Literature

Experience / Qualifications

I am teaching French and Literature, English ESL, Latin and History since 2010 in French State schools, in international schools like IBS and LIL in Wembley, in British Sports programme like BSA.

Non-academic Latin lessons. Multilingual teacher with 9 years of experience. Pronunciation, historical linguistics, conceptual semantics.
Contrary to popular belief, learning Latin is not like learning the phone book by heart. I offer you Latin lessons that are unlike any other. There are two types of courses. Here is an analogy to illustrate their respective approaches: If you take the train back and forth every day and don't have time to wait long at the platform, imagine that you only have two options: 1) Learn the schedules by heart. 2) Note that the train arrives every ten minutes and that a train arrives for example at 7:00 a.m. In school pedagogy, in study notebooks and in ordinary courses, it is the first approach which is adopted - in the courses that I offer you, it is the second because it is more economical and faster. My offer is aimed at both students and adults who want to learn the Latin language or deepen their knowledge without time-consuming detours through the insanities of school methods which do not produce results. Learning is easy but unlearning what has become a bad habit is extremely difficult. All the more important it is to learn the right reflexes as early as possible. With my tailor-made teaching you will accelerate your learning in a positive state of mind. I offer individual or group Latin lessons (2 to 5 people). The methods are based on cognitive sciences and in particular historical linguistics. What will not be the subject of the course: learn lists of verbs; learn lists of nouns with their gender; learn words with their translations; memory card game; doing school exercises; follow the program in a notebook; impose French grammar on the Latin language. What matters to me in particular: motivate my student and give him a learning rhythm; encourage creativity; make friends with language; letters and their sounds strengthen your memory by working on the phonological loop; teach construction plans instead of having people learn sentences by heart; explain how the language works to make my student independent as quickly as possible; breaking preconceived ideas such as the gammatical gender would have a link with the biological gender, the accusative would be a direct complement and the dative an indirect complement, the verbs would be irregular, the declension would be random and therefore to be learned with each verb... ; place practice at the center and articulate grammar around practice. In the context of a first course, you can get a well-founded idea of my pedagogy. I look forward to meeting you.

Learn Latin for school / university / exam with FUN and passion
I studied Latin for 6 years (high school and university) and read the works of (among others) : -Ovidius -Virgil -Horace -Civero -Catullus I assign homework and after I receive it, correct it thoroughly additionally providing a lot of remarks/examples if they are necessary. During my lessons I use : - Skype/Whatsapp/Messenger to connect with you, - Google Docs to keep notes, which you can check at any time and they are yours to keep, - sketch board me to make mind maps to show connections between ideas, etc. - books, PPP, word docs, diagrams, pics, etc. I adore my profession and desire each and every one of my students be satisfied with the lesson. That's why I make sure the atmosphere is stress-free and nice. I also want my lessons to be as effective as possible. Therefore, I make sure they are well-prepared, although they can be altered at any point, should such an opportunity arise. I like explaining things in a variety of ways as well as make use of dictionaries, diagrams, etc. When it comes to students who want to sit an exam, I am very demanding. What can I teach? - I can prepare you for exams at school / university. - I can help you with assignments / HW. - I can help you with translations / commentaries / grammar / syntax.

Latin Grammar, Syntax, and Literature: Beginner, Intermediate, or Advanced
My Latin class is fitting for learners at any level. Having studied Latin now for eleven years, not only in school but also at the Universities of Glasgow and Cambridge, I am extremely familiar with the language and its challenges. Using the Wheelock Latin textbook, adapted texts, and even "real" Latin literature where appropriate, I envisage Latin teaching and tutoring that focusses on the necessary aspects of grammar and rote language learning but supplements them with knowledge of Ancient Roman culture, history, and literature to make the language more alive and relevant. I am well-acquainted not only with the requirements of Latin learning at school, particularly for GCSEs, but also with the expectations of university Latin courses. A beginner will come to understand the fundamentals of the language, common vocabulary, and the "philosophy" that underlies grammatical forms and syntactical structures, an intermediate learner will come to grasp the more nuanced and trickier aspects of Latin grammar and reading, and an advanced learner will find confidence in reading Latin texts "in the wild" and the fluidity of translation and interpretation. Classes can be catered easily to the specific learning needs of any individual.

Living Latin through Comprehensible Input (Contemporary and Medieval Latin)
You will learn Latin the way it was meant to be learned - through conversation! Medieval scholars and contemporary language researchers alike advocate the use of dialogues and comprehensible input for language acquisition, and it most certainly works! As opposed to the "memorise grammar rules and then babble them in front of the class" approach that was demonstrated by the infamous "Romanēs eunt domus" scene from Monty Python's "The Life of Brian", you will learn to feel the grammar, so that you will be able to use the different cases of Latin without even thinking about it, just like a native speaker! For this class we will be using the following books, depending on the learner's level: Hans Øreberg's "Lingua Latīna per sē Illustrāta" "Corderiī Colloquia" Erasmus Rask's "Colloquia Familiaria" John C. Traupman Conversational Latin for Oral Proficiency I will be the collocutor and I will answer the learner's questions and explain certain oddities solely in Latin (I will use a second language only when the situation calls for it) We will also engage in free-form conversations, discussions of the dialogues, of our life experiences etc so that the learner can apply what they learn to real-life situations and expand their vocabulary

Latin lessons for all levels (beginners, intermediates, advanced, higher education students)-ADULTS
Associate professor, Doctor of Letters (Paris IV Sorbonne), teaches Latin at all levels. This course is aimed at anyone wishing to learn or relearn the Latin language, progressively access literature, history, philosophy, ancient sciences, and approach Latin culture. It is also intended for any pupil or student wishing for support in this subject. Learning the Latin language presupposes a few solid bases of French grammar that we review of course if necessary, before installing Latin grammatical knowledge. Learning Latin develops the rigor and sense of translation.

Private Latin lessons: initiation, support and improvement
Latin, a fascinating language that allows you to better understand French, to immerse yourself in the stories from Antiquity to the Renaissance and to discover a new way of thinking. Whether it is to discover it, to deepen it or to help you with your courses, you will benefit from my experience in classical studies, from my years spent in a library of old books and manuscripts and from my passion for grammar (which is not so boring when you know where to take it).

Latin, Ancient Greek, and Biology tutoring classes
I have several years of experience tutoring students of different age groups in Latin and Ancient Greek. I am deeply passionate about these languages and I enjoy helping students improving at them. I believe that understanding the structure of a sentence is fundamental when approaching these languages, therefore this is an important focus for me. During the class I always dedicate some time to reasoning and translating sentences together with the student. I have a BS in pharmaceutical biotechnology and I am currently a master student in Medicine. I find biology very fascinating and I have been tutoring it for years now. Depending on the topic and the student's needs, I structure the lessons differently. I usually explain the topic and use tools such as spaced repetition, notes, conceptual maps to make sure that the student has understood.

Andrés
Ancient Greek, Latin and Spanish Language (online and face-to-face)
Hello! I am Andrés and I have a degree in Classical Philology. I teach Latin and ancient Greek classes, at all levels, both for school reinforcement and if you want to learn these two languages for pleasure. I like to teach these subjects based on new methodologies that make learning them more enjoyable and pleasant for the student. In addition, I like to complement the teaching of these languages with culture and history classes, since it is very important to know the context in which we move in each class. Anyway, I adapt to the needs of each student. I also teach Spanish Language and Literature reinforcement classes, both for Primary, ESO, Baccalaureate students, and those who take the University entrance exams. Flexible schedule.

Aitana
School support at different levels, primary, ESO and Baccalaureate.
I am a student who can solve doubts about language and literature, history, Latin, English or others. Doubts regarding nominal syntax and text comments are, especially, the problems that I can best explain. I can visit libraries and public places in Madrid in person, the option would be both in person and telematically through Zoom or similar. They are negotiable and the duration and schedule of the classes also depends on the needs of the student. Also contact me if what you need is of another subject or if you have any questions. :)

Carlotta
Latin tutoring for secondary students (Dutch / Latin / English)
Salvē, my name is Carlotta and I have 7 years of experience in tutoring. Nowadays these continue online, which in my experience does not reduce the quality or results in any way. Since April 2022, I have been taking Latin language acquisition courses at Schola Latīna, an Italian private school that uses the comprehensible input (CI) method. This means that all lessons are taught exclusively in the target language, allowing me to not only translate Latin, but also speak and write it. Since no Flemish school expects active language skills, I will of course not do this unsolicited during lessons ;) In practice the same problems always return: difficulties with translation, difficulties with memorization of sequences and vocabulary, lack of motivation or fun. When such a fantastic profession is experienced as difficult, it is only logical that motivation also drops. Whatever the problem, Latin itself is a perfectly feasible subject. I also tutored mathematics and noticed that students only have fun when they are no longer struggling, which is what we are working towards :) My goal is to be less needed as quickly as possible by learning and practicing strategies. When you contact us, please state the year the student is in. I provide extra customized material! Cūrā ut valeās, Carlotta
