Hello! 👋 My name is Rafael and I’m from Portugal! :) I would love to help you on this adventure of learning the Portuguese language. I’m fluent in teaching both bacalhau Portuguese and caipirinha Portuguese (PT & BR). I’m deeply involved with both cultures. My classes are tailored to meet the needs of my students. I have the experience and skills to offer conversation lessons and/or more structured classes focused on grammar. Whatever your reason for seeking Portuguese lessons, I’m here to listen and help you in any way I can. FYI: I’m also a musician, so we can chat a lot about music or even incorporate it into our Portuguese lessons. Have you ever wanted to analyze the lyrics of Bossa Nova or Fado? If you love Brazilian or Portuguese music, we can definitely use it as class material. I have been teaching at the Una Paloma Blanca language school in Rotterdam since 2020. Here, I had the chance to really develop my teaching craft, working with many different students, each with their own needs and reasons for learning Portuguese. I had the opportunity to teach both European and Brazilian Portuguese to individual and group classes. In addition to this work, I also provided private lessons to some students who needed preparation before moving to Brazil or Portugal. In my classes, we set personal goals, and I help you with all the knowledge and experience I have. My lessons are balanced with a good amount of conversation practice, grammar and exercises. So, you want to learn Portuguese, but you’re still not sure if I’m the right person to help? I would be delighted to do a lesson so we can introduce ourselves and discuss how I can assist you! Let me show you how I can be a fun and efficient Portuguese tutor! :) Thank you for your attention, and I hope to see you in class! Rafael

SPECIALISED IN TEACHING ADULTS. Would you like to learn one of the instruments which have more style possibilities? Would you like to know why many composers say that is a very powerful instrument because it fits in may situations? Did you know that in the Klezmer history clarinet substituted the violin for projection reasons but also because perfectly able to imitate the human voice, crying or laughing? Would you like to discover the fascinating world of clarinet? One of my priorities as a musician is the sound. I believe that with a beautiful and personal sound you are able at every level to transmit emotion and meaning, it doesn’t matter the difficulty or the level. So I try to focus first on awareness of what’s beautiful for the student and what’s not. Then through technique and repertoire (suggestions of the student or suggestions of mine that can help to grow the student curiosity), we develop the student knowledge. Always helping the student to understand -depending on his/her the theoretical level- what we are doing, putting together music and theory. And giving tools to expand the border, at all levels. I have knowledge and experience in Jazz, Classical, Klezmer, Choro Music and Improvisation. You just need a precious element! • Music Theory I focus on having a good basics, spending as much as we need to understand every single thing, because then with times it becomes more easy. I try to help the student simplifying the material because then, we only with ourselves with a good procedure of the basics to solve any problem. Only with one lesson, you will understand what I mean. I have experience in preparing students for exams, the ones for the semester as well as any official exam; doesn't matter if you have an intermediate theory level and you want to improve, or if you would like to be stronger solidifying the knowledge you have (which is always the best option), or if you don’t know anything about notes and music concepts and you would like to be familiar with them. Maybe you are an adult who always wanted to improvise but doesn’t know where to start...? The only thing you need is a good organization -which I can provide- to reach any goal!

Ciao! I have been teaching Italian for the past sixteen years, privately and at language schools including La Scuola Italiana del Greenwich Village in New York and ItalCultura, the school of the Italian Cultural Institute of Chicago. During our first two lessons, I’ll make sure you have the tools to pronounce and recognize all the sounds of Italian. This step is essential, and it makes everything that comes afterwards much easier. When I teach, I try to avoid all the things I hated as a language student. My terrifying French teacher in middle school made us repeat the same fake dialogue from a really bad textbook ad nauseam, over and over and over again. Some of it is still carved into my brain: “Bonjour, je m’appelle Richard Drapeau, je viens du Canada, je suis Canadien...” So we won’t do that. We’ll use real songs and real literature. We’ll have real conversations, tell stories, improvise, and, when possible, go on “talking walks.” I find that when you engage more of your senses, it becomes easier to relax, stay curious, and actually remember new words. I customize my materials around your interests, needs, and desired pace. If you love cinema, we can work with films. If you’re interested in literature, politics, food, art, history, or simply being able to have a proper conversation when you’re in Italy, that can become part of the class. And because you’re learning with a native Italian, you’ll also learn about Italian culture, history, habits, gestures, contradictions, and ways of thinking. Language is never just a pile of grammar rules. I speak several languages myself, so I know both how exciting and how painfully tedious learning one can be. My aim is to give you a strong foundation without draining all the life out of it. I hold a degree in Lingue e Letterature Straniere (Foreign Languages and Literatures) from Università Roma Tre and a Master of Fine Arts in Interdisciplinary Arts and Media from Columbia College Chicago. I wrote my university thesis on translating a long epic poem by W. H. Auden, and at one point I tried to ride a horse across America.

We will find your needs together and start working from that point. You can come with no experience at all and I will help you to explore and develop your voice. It's also not important if you cannot read music, I can help you with that as well. If you are already a singer, we will work in order to refine your technique. Although I have the most experience with classical, I am able and I am glad to teach other styles! Voice, breathing, and posture are connected and fundamental for a healthy technique so we will also work on that while we focus on your voice. Singing can be very personal and confronting but do not fear, we work in a safe environment. Let yourself be surprised with what you can achieve!! The lesson can be in English, Spanish, Portuguese, or Italian.

Many parents recognize this: at first, everything seems fine, but suddenly, failing grades in math, chemistry, or other science subjects start to appear. The material becomes faster and more difficult, and students unknowingly lose their way. What starts with a single failing grade can quickly escalate into a chronic learning deficit, test stress, and a lack of self-confidence. At school, there's often not enough time to help everyone individually. As a result, some students are left with questions that are never properly explained. Through targeted, personalized tutoring, I help students close those gaps and finally truly understand the material. I explain difficult topics clearly and step-by-step, so students not only get better grades but also regain confidence and peace of mind during tests and exams. I have a VWO Science & Health background and am studying in the medical/dental field, which gives me a lot of experience with science subjects such as chemistry, biochemistry and mathematics. Many parents wait until grades are low or exam year begins, but early intervention makes the difference between continuing to struggle and making progress again. Do you want your child to regain control of the material and take tests with more confidence? Please feel free to send a message for more information or to schedule an initial tutoring session.

Cello lessons are adapted to each student’s level, goals and musical interests. Whether you are just starting or already have experience with the instrument, we will work on developing a solid technique while keeping music-making enjoyable and motivating. Lessons can include posture, bow technique, left-hand technique, sound production, intonation, rhythm, musical interpretation and repertoire. I also help students develop effective practice habits, so they can make progress independently between lessons. From there, we will build a personalised approach and choose exercises and pieces that suit your needs and level. My main background is in classical cello, chamber music and orchestral playing, and I aim to create a relaxed and supportive environment where students can develop both confidence and musical independence.
