Hi, my name is Jim. I'm an electronic music producer with a Master’s degree in Music from the Fontys Academy of Arts (Rockacademie) in Tilburg, Netherlands. For me, making music is about building the skills and mindset to bring creative ideas to life and I’m passionate about helping others do the same. As Malvae, I have written, sung, produced, mixed, and performed my own music, reaching #17 in the Spotify Viral 50 charts in the USA, gathering millions of streams, and featuring in films like the upcoming documentary King of the Streets and a Netflix series. One of the highlights of my artistic journey was the Amazonas Project, where I traveled deep into the Amazon rainforest to record and transform natural sounds into a full-length concept album, blending storytelling, sound design, and music into a single experience. I had the honour of headlining my own show at Melkweg Amsterdam, one of the Netherlands' most iconic venues, and curated my own events while performing immersive, self-built live sets with visuals. I’ve also taught technical music skills at professional facilities such as Wisseloord Studios in Hilversum. Music has taken me to places I never imagined, from the Amazon rainforest to some of the most iconic stages and I'm excited to help you build your own creative path. In my lessons, I offer structured, personalised education in music production, composition, sound design, mixing, mastering, and live performance. For online students, I use specialised tools that allow us to collaborate in real-time with HD audio quality. My own musical path often started by recording sounds from my travels around the world and blending them with synthesizers and my voice. Currently a DJ and having done 5 years of piano, I offer my services for private music lessons. Musical composition (by computer): I can teach the basics of composition and combine my personal experience with the course to give you a solid foundation for your personal development. Piano: Can teach coordination exercises, learn pieces that the student has chosen according to their level and play with one or two hands (bonus for anything related to improvisation) DJ: As I know that the world of DJs is a wild fauna where no one gives you any pointers, I can guide you through this fabulous universe by showing you how to master a turntable, what a DJ needs, etc.

This course is designed for aspiring music producers who want to start creating music using digital tools. Whether you're completely new or have some basic knowledge, you'll learn how to build professional-sounding tracks from scratch. We’ll cover essential concepts like beat making, working with MIDI and audio, using virtual instruments and effects, and basic mixing techniques. You’ll also get hands-on with a DAW (such as Ableton Live or FL Studio) to produce your own music. By the end of this course, you’ll have the skills to confidently start or continue your music production journey.

Logic Pro is a powerful but complex software tool that can be used to create everything from very basic recordings and compositions, to huge professional productions. You'll learn all the skills you need to set up and use Logic Pro; how to record and edit audio, use software instruments and plug-in effects, and how to mix and process your sounds. Lessons can either be conducted online, or at my studio, if you're local to Plymouth (it's not in a restaurant, I don't know why it says that!) I've been using Logic Pro for almost 25 years and have taught it at University level.

I teach everything related to electronic music, both theoretically and practically: DJing, digital and analog production, audio recording, mixing, compositing, etc. My classes are tailored to each individual's needs and expectations. In addition to video lessons, I can also host classes directly in my studio to practice directly on my equipment (mixing desk, vinyl turntables, synthesizer, modular, drum machine, effects machine, piano, etc.). We will study everything related to computer composition. Sound synthesis, the structure of a piece, connection with external synthesizers, mixing and mastering. We will also be able to work on orchestral harmonization and setting up a streaming setup.

Beatmaking is the art of putting the right drums with the right melodies : but it's deeper than that. Music composition encompasses a lot of skills and requires a deep understanding of our own tastes, culture, and social skills in order to create the most authentic sound that we can think of.

I can teach how you how to write music using a computer, your instrument, or for other musicians to play. I can teach you how to record yourself and then prepare those recordings for release. I have experience writing music in a range of styles, including film scores, EDM, ambient, and classical music. I have helped artists in folk, metal, EDM, hip hop, rock, pop, and many other genres. Composition I can help you to choose a digital audio workstation, which you can use to write and record music. I can help you install it and get it set up on your computer. I can then guide through sourcing and installing virtual instruments that will let you create music in any genre, and for any purpose. Once you're setup, I can guide you through creating your first musical ideas, and then developing them into cohesive musical pieces. I can teach you how to write music for others, and contribute to creative projects. Once you've been learning for a while, or if you already have experience, we can start to cover more advanced topics such as orchestration, synthesis, and more complex musical forms. Production Music production is the process of taking a basic musical piece, such as a song, and arranging and polishing it to prepare it for release. I can teach you to arrange parts for strings, synths, or choir, or write drum, bass, guitar, or keyboard parts. I have worked with artists in folk, metal, rock, pop, jazz, RnB, hip hop, and EDM. No matter your genre, I can help you polish your songs and prepare them for release. Audio Engineering Do you want to set up your own home recording studio? To learn how to record and mix your own songs? Or are you just curious to understand more about how the recording process works in studios? I can teach all you need to know about microphones, audio interfaces, and how to record your own instruments. I can give you advice on what equipment you need to get started on setting up your own studio at home. I can also teach you how to edit and mix recordings and songs so that every element is clear and serves the rest of the song well. Finally, I can teach you to master your song to prepare it for release, ensuring that it is loud and clear, no matter where you publish it.

< Learning Piano is not merely about playing the piano > Before starting to learn the piano, it’s essential to recognize that : '' What we are actually learning is "Music", but not only "Piano". '' The goal of learning any instrument is to acquire the language of music, enabling us to express ourselves and enjoy music with others. Playing the piano is for creating beautiful sounds, not really for developing finger speed or strength. That’s the function of gym. < Music is like cooking > When we cook, to make roast beef tender, of course, it’s nice to have a tender heart, but without knowing how to control the temperature, the roast beef won’t become tender merely by our tender heart. By only adding salt, the dish won’t be sweet. Similarly, simply playing or writing a C major triad chord won’t convey a sorrowful feeling. To create the feeling we want, no matter how much sentiment we have in our hearts, to convey it via music, it needs to be translated into the language which the piano can understand, which means, how we press and lift the keys and pedals. Similarly, when we compose, it needs to be transferred into chords, and notes we write. < Difference between an audience and a musician > There is a common belief that a musician can make music with sentiment or feeling. While it’s partially true, the most essential thing is knowing ‘’How’’ to create the sound that conveys the feeling we want, rather than merely knowing ‘’What’' feeling we want to convey. The understanding of the mechanism behind music is essential, as cooking, and that is the difference between an audience and a musician. As an audience, one can simply feel the music. Like a chief who knows how to create a specific flavor to convey, a musician knows how to create the sound which can convey the feeling we want. While knowing which feeling we want is great, it’s merely the first step. Your emotions are not too different from Chopin, Beethoven, Adele or Taylor Swift, otherwise, they can’t resonate with you. But they know how to create the sound that conveys the feeling they want to their audience. < Course Content > I consider my course to be a form of "Music Consultation" because it contains a wide range of subjects that are essential to a professional musician. While we focus on piano playing, there are also music theory, music history, instrument construction, ergonomics for performers, analysis of composer styles, composition, arrangement, recording, MIDI, computer music, the physics of sound, and more. In avoid of confusion, let’s still call my course as "Piano Course”. < Duration > For each course, I will reserve at least 70 minutes in my schedule for you, including 60 minutes of class time and an additional 10 minutes for discussion and any questions you may have. This will ensure that your courses are not rushed by the next student. This ensures that there is enough time for you to solve your piano and music problems. < Recording > I highly encourage my students to record their progress. This can provide an objective standard for comparison and help you analyze your playing precisely. In my nine years of experience teaching music, I've found many students, including those advanced, already play certain sections very well, while other sections may not be not well enough. But they still try to improving those fine sections, while not aware of those weak sections. Without an objective reference, it’s hard to distribute our effort precisely. This can lead to not only unstable performance, but also practicing without a precise goal can easily reduce enthusiasm. Recording your results and comparing them with those recordings you like on YouTube or Spotify can be an effective way to analyze your playing and set precise goals. If you have a digital piano, I can help you produce a video of your performance for each session. This can be a tangible record of your efforts and you can share it with your friends and family via YouTube or other platforms.
