Studying Latin and Greek can enhance your understanding of English vocabulary and grammar, as many English words have roots in these languages. By learning Latin and Greek, you can develop a deeper appreciation for the origins of words and their meanings. This knowledge can be useful in fields such as law, medicine, and science, where technical vocabulary has Latin and Greek roots.

Knowing these languages can also improve your critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Both Latin and Greek are highly structured, and mastering them requires attention to detail and logical thinking - it's the kind of brain training that puts your morning crossword or sudoku to shame! Furthermore, studying ancient texts can help you both to develop analytical and interpretive skills that can be applied in various academic and professional fields, and also gain a firm grasp on cultures which permeate modern life.

These ancient languages are also useful for those interested in pursuing a career in academia, law, medicine, or any field that values research and analysis, since many graduate programs require knowledge of Latin and Greek, and fluency in these languages can open up opportunities for research and scholarship in fields such as classics, history, and philosophy.

Finally, learning Latin and Greek can also provide personal enrichment and cultural understanding. These languages have been instrumental in shaping Western culture, from their mythology and philosophy, to theatre and art. Studying Latin and Greek can provide insight into the history, literature, and art of ancient civilizations, and the ways in which they reach into modern life.

In summary, learning Latin and Greek can offer a range of benefits, from improving your understanding of English to enhancing your critical thinking skills, opening up career opportunities, and providing cultural enrichment.

I can ensure a pleasant and upbeat working atmosphere, that will keep your mind as sharp as a tack!

Hello, I’m Sam. I’m currently an University student at Exeter University, studying Economics. I recently left KCS, Wimbledon with three A-Levels (Maths A*, Economics A*, Latin A). I’m keen to tutor students at A-Level or below in either Maths or GCSE or below in Latin. I achieved grade 9s in Maths, Further Maths and Latin at iGCSE.

I have experienced tutoring students aged 8-16 over the last 4 years in Maths and Latin, both online and in person. I have further experience working with children having coached football, rugby and cricket for the last 4 years.

I am a very flexible tutor, and am happy to teach whatever my student needs most that session, whether it be a homework or concept they don’t quite understand, or revision for an upcoming test. I have a deep understanding of current curriculums, having studied them across various exam boards not too long ago.

During sessions, I'd start be seeing where my tutee has been struggling or making mistakes, before walking through practice questions with them, to see how their current level of understanding translates into real, exam-style questions. I aim for my tutees to take the front seat during sessions, in order that they are doing all the critical thinking, in order to help them practise without my help. I may also set a few short homeworks to ensure my tutees are consolidating what they have learnt, and don't forget it all by the time our next session comes around!

My main aim is for my tutees to enjoy the subject! By enjoying it, you will be more inclined to concentrate, and put the work in to achieve their potential by the time exam season comes around. I believe that no matter how a student has performed in their subject in previous years, I can help them achieve the highest grades in their exams, and I will not settle for less!

I offer you a new learning experience.

To the uninitiated, a grammar book seems to be written in another language because the meaning of the words is incomprehensible. In a down-to-earth way, I'll translate the grammar into familiar words. With my tailor-made teaching you will accelerate your learning while having a positive mindset.

You can book a complete course with regular sessions or individual lessons to overcome a specific problem, such as pronunciation or a particular point in grammar.

Learning a foreign language is not a linear process that consists of memorising a list of words, and speaking a foreign language is not an oral translation exercise.

There are two types of approaches to acquiring knowledge:

When asked what year follows 1999, you can immediately answer 2000 without having to think for a long time and, above all, without having memorised each number individually, starting with 1, 2, 3 ... You know that numbers are formed according to a certain pattern. With only ten digits, you can form an infinite number of numbers and always know which number comes next.

When it comes to the alphabet, words and sentences, it's more or less the same, but school pedagogy, school textbooks and regular lessons still follow the rote learning approach. In the lessons I propose, you will learn to use patterns because this is more efficient and faster.

Learning is easy, but unlearning bad habits is extremely difficult. This makes it all the more important to learn the right reflexes as early as possible.

My offer is aimed at both teenagers and adults who want to acquire a solid foundation of the Latin language without the time-consuming diversions of absurd school methods.

I offer individual or group lessons for Latin. The methods are based on cognitive science and, in particular, comparative linguistics. My flexible programme can be tailored to your individual needs.

What is particularly important to me:

motivating my students and help them establish a learning rhythm;
encouraging their creativity;
helping them become more familiar with the language;
teaching them the letters and their sounds;
strengthening their memory by training their phonological loop;
teaching sentence building plans instead of memorising sentences;
explaining how language works so that my students can become independent as quickly as possible.

I look forward to meeting you.
