Mai 2026 : À l’ère de la neurodiversité, la distinction binaire « une ou deux langues » chez les bilingues mérite d’être remise en question, question que les étudiants sont capables d’alimenter. J’ai toujours trouvé les modèles de production bilingue (et les omniprésentes diapositives PowerPoint) utilisés par les enseignants universitaires un frein, car ils manquent de clarté et d’explications ; tels qu’ils sont présentés, ils ne sont pas pertinents et n’offrent que peu d’informations ou d’exemples aux étudiants monolingues.

Le changement de code, un sous-produit du bilinguisme, est désormais un terme que l'on retrouve même dans les graffitis des quartiers ethniques minoritaires (« les Blancs peuvent-ils changer de code », un exemple trouvé). Veuillez noter qu'il s'agit d'un terme linguistique, utilisé pour basculer entre deux langues, et non entre des variétés locales ou sociales de l'anglais.

Ma position personnelle est que le bilinguisme n’existe pas : il y a toujours une langue qui souffre d’attrition et une langue qui prévaut, principalement en raison de son statut prestigieux par rapport à l’autre langue. En revanche, un enfant exposé à plus d’une langue ne peut pas être véritablement monolingue.

Pour ce cours (très populaire dans les universités européennes, tant au niveau du premier cycle que du troisième cycle), nous passerons en revue en détail les termes utilisés pour discuter du bilinguisme, puis discuterons, à l'aide de livres et d'articles publiés, de qui peut être considéré comme bilingue ( ou sommes-nous tous, une autre langue en sommeil ?). Le bilinguisme peut-il être défini par le locuteur plutôt que par la « communauté » ? Peut-il être imposé par l’État ? Un cerveau bilingue fonctionne-t-il de la même manière qu’un cerveau monolingue ? Il s'agit de questions de recherche qui émergent sous forme de sujets de thèse ou de thèse, tant dans les cours de premier cycle que de troisième cycle.
