I've tutored English for 4+ plus years, so am extremely familiar with the English curriculum and the scheme of assessment for GCSE and A-level. I place heavy emphasis on the assessment objectives set out by the exam board and focus on meeting this criteria throughout students' answers. For language, the main focus is immediately on exam technique and writing answers in the way in which the examiners have stated they want answers to be written. Progress is primarily made through feedback and repetition. A student writes their answer for me, I give them feedback and tell them what was strong about their answer and where they should improve, they then re-write this answer or an answer to a different question using the feedback that I have given them and this process goes on. This technique has proven to be successful with many students in the past. With Literature I use this same method, however this is paired with content too. I cover context, themes/motifs, characters, analysis of quotes/language, writers intentions and the readers responce. These are all key factors to be considered when writing an English Literature essay. Along side exam technique, I also focus on effective revision methods, creating helpful revision resources and successful time management.
