About Me

In my view, the key to learning a language is to connect its sounds and written words with real life. Children’s first encounters with their mother tongue are not with abstract rules, but with responsive conversations, situations they can understand, and their own need to express themselves. This inspires me to combine a solid foundation in pinyin, pronunciation and tones with meaningful practice tailored to each learner.
My students include children and teenagers, but the majority are businesspeople working with the Chinese market and travellers planning to visit China. For adults, I use a different approach from that used with children: practical, focused and built around the situations in which they need Chinese. Business interactions, travel conversations and everyday communication provide the starting point. Through targeted vocabulary, useful phrases and realistic conversation practice, I help them make effective use of their available study time and begin applying what they learn as soon as possible.
For children, I combine games, stories, reading and everyday conversation. As a writer, I particularly value the role of literature in my teaching. A story, a poem or a short diary entry not only helps students build vocabulary and develop their ability to express themselves, but also encourages imagination, personal responses and creativity. In this process, I often feel that I am doing more than teaching a language: I am introducing students to the rich cultural traditions behind Chinese characters.
Both Chinese characters and ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs preserve traces of representing the world through recognisable images. They offer glimpses into how people in the distant past observed nature and understood life. From the pictorial elements in Chinese characters to natural imagery in poetry and the ways stories make sense of human experience, language learning can also become a cultural exploration driven by curiosity.
My lessons reflect each student’s age, level and goals. For one learner, success may mean communicating independently on a business trip; for another, discovering the pleasure of a Chinese story or writing something of their own. When learning connects with personal needs, interests and experiences, motivation grows. I believe this also helps explain why many of my students continue learning Chinese with me for years.

Education
I graduated from Guangxi University in China. I also attended two training programmes for writers at the Lu Xun Literary Institute in Beijing. I write novels, poetry and essays and have published several books.
Experience / Qualifications
