Traditional clay modelling techniques - sculpture classes
course price icon
From 20 £ /h

In these lessons / course I will introduce you to the basics of traditional clay modelling. Starting from understanding proportions, measuring 3-dimensional objects and building a strong armature using wood and wire to carefully examining and transferring the shapes of the model into your own clay reproduction.

Michelangelo, Bernini and Rodin have been studying the sculptures of their predecessors the same way and have been a great influence on my own work, and that is why I want to pass this knowledge on.

In these lessons, you will also acquire some knowledge of the use of power-tools necessary to make the armatures.

About Me
I am a contemporary artist having studied traditional, academic and anatomic clay modelling for six years and spent more than fourteen years studying fine art overall (drawing in pencil and charcoal, oil painting, sculpting, stone and wood carving, etc.). I hold a MFA from The University of Edinburgh (2019) and BA from The Art Academy of Latvia (2017). Throughout the years of developing my sculpting technique I have worked in different materials, including, clay, plaster, foam, polyester resin/ fibreglass, wood, metal, stone, fabrics, etc. I have extensive knowledge of mould making and bronze casting. Most of the moulds I make are made of silicon and plaster, for larger projects, I use fibreglass.

My artistic work consists of a diverse range of contemporary contexts relating to the human body. Through the chosen medium I emphasize the motion - how the human body portrays what impact’s it within the pose, whether it is environmental or emotional footprint. I am interested in the aftermath of those factors on the sculptural body while it is in process of modelling in clay and the emotional affluence when finished.
I have always found traditional composition and modelling in clay, stone, and wood satisfying to my intellectual curiosity and providing a meaningful methodological foundation. Although, I also find myself continually interested in interdisciplinary projects, work in different mediums and materials that are not particularly traditional for sculpting.
The material I choose for each project becomes an important part of the work supporting and highlighting the idea.

I am a Goldsmiths BA Fine art second year. I do paintings and scultings mainly and sculptural paintings. I love to understand and feel the materials and use the materialities' characteristics and histories to symbolise meanings in my work.

My class would be suitable for potential young childrens or teenagers who are interested in art or want to get into art. As art is the language for me, I would love my students to enjoy and show their creativity in my class and I would help them to develop and create actual works in real life.

There would be no pressure in this class I have experice of tutoring 10year old child and he was enjoying every class. He had ADHD and showed ADHD behaviours during class but as a neurodivergent person I gave him a breaks during classes and talked about his interests so I could figure out what he is interested in so I could prepare next class for him and at the same time the kid could had his little refreshment from doing art work. And I had 1:1 meetings with their parents because they wanted to know how it went and how he was behaving so I gave her a lot of feedbacks from my perspective (I did let her know it is from my perspective) .

My dream is to be an artist/ art professor(university tutor) as I also had mental health issues so I am aware of how to deal with people who should I take more care of and also as a neurodivergent person I could deal with neurodivergent students:)

My curriculum would be very personalised by students.

I am an oil pastel lover who turns to this medium again and again — when I’m happy, tired, bored, overwhelmed, or simply longing to be surrounded by colour. Oil pastels have accompanied me through many moments of life, always offering comfort, freedom, and expression.

Every time I paint with oil pastels, I find a sense of relaxation and inner peace — something increasingly precious in our fast-paced world.

Oil pastels are, to me, a truly magical material. They can be firm or soft, bold or delicate, layered or blended. With just your hands and simple tools, they invite both control and spontaneity, making them perfect for beginners and experienced artists alike.

In an age where AI can generate endless images, I believe deeply in preserving the human act of creation — the joy of touching materials, playing with colour, and allowing emotions to flow through the hands. Painting is not just about making images; it is about reconnecting with ourselves.

I believe everyone has the ability to create art. Everyone has their own sense of colour, rhythm, and expression.

**** What you will learn in this class ****
🖼️ Essential oil pastel techniques (layering, blending, texture, and composition)

🎨 Colour combinations and how to develop your own colour language

🖌️ Creative approaches to painting freely and intuitively

🧘 How to use painting and colour as a tool for relaxation, emotional release, and self-care

This class is suitable for beginners and intermediate learners. No prior art experience is required — only curiosity and openness!

**** Materials ****
In-person sessions: All materials are provided, including oil pastels, paper, masking tape, and palette knives. Just bring yourself.
Online sessions: Materials are not provided, but I will guide you in advance on what to prepare and how to use simple and accessible supplies.

In our sessions, we don’t just paint — we explore, connect, and gently listen to our inner world.

I look forward to sharing this colourful, calming, and meaningful journey with you!
