My name is Gabriela, and I graduated with a Master of Science from Leiden University four years ago. Since then, I've been working in international organizations and recently joined the private sector; my day-to-day work is mostly focused on keeping people safe and secure by analyzing geopolitical, economic, social, legal and security developments globally.

My area of expertise is in the fields of Criminology, International Relations, International Law and Security Studies. I also provide tutoring in English for academic purposes (including IELTS prep), intensive writing and research methodologies.

I have substantial experience in writing academic research papers on a wide variety of subjects. I am here to help high school students and undergraduates develop their writing and analytical skills and become more confident in their abilities. I am also experienced in teaching English as a second language.

My purpose is to motivate and help students solve problems and come up with solutions on their own. I believe that with the right kind of preparation, no subject can be ‘too difficult’. I like seeing students going the extra mile and overcoming obstacles. My teaching method consists of giving students specific guidelines and directions so that they can engage in a learning process and become efficient problem solvers themselves. I see tutoring as the first step towards progress, but I want my students to develop the skills necessary to become successful learners on their own!

I also provide teaching support for younger students. I have experience working with children aged 7 to 14 years old.

About Me

My name is Gabriela, and I was born and raised in Bulgaria. I lived in the Netherlands for five years, where I completed my studies and worked in an international organization afterwards.

I graduated Bachelor of Arts Cum Laude from University College Roosevelt, an international honors college of Utrecht University. I majored in Political Science, International Relations and International Law. However, the interdisciplinary approach of my program allowed me to take courses from different disciplines and thus broaden my academic knowledge and develop my expertise in advanced academic writing and research methodologies.

In 2020, I graduated with a Master of Science in Crisis and Security Management from Leiden University.

I’ve been tutoring with Apprentus for some time now and I must say that giving lessons is one of my favourite activities! I teach part-time mainly because interacting with and providing support to other students has always been a passion of mine, plus I absolutely love how much students can teach you in return!

My methodology: Learning to structure one's thoughts to express oneself better
My approach is based on a simple observation: success is not achieved through lack of effort, but often through a lack of method and confidence. My role is to transform subjects sometimes perceived as abstract (Philosophy, French) or intimidating (English) into concrete tools for success.

The typical course of a session:
1. Quick diagnosis: We start by identifying the areas of uncertainty from the previous lesson or the difficulties with a specific exercise.
2. Taking action: No boring lectures! We work on concrete exercises, essay plans or oral practice (in English) to "learn by doing".
3. The "Montreal Method": Having worked for two and a half years in Quebec, I use a North American pedagogy that is very focused on encouragement, clear structure and student autonomy.
4. Summary & Objectives: We end each session with a recap of the key points so that the student knows exactly what to revise.
