Guitar for beginners. This is the course where you learn the basic guitar skills. I teach electric, classical and acoustic (folk, flatpicking) guitars, you can learn a mix of these similar yet very specific techniques or focus on the one of your preference. In electric and acoustic guitars the first challenges are pick control, hand coordination and left hand positions (and shifting them). With classical guitar the goal will be using the right hand fingers independently, including the thumb for the bass notes and the left hand will have similar challenges to the other guitars. In classical guitar we will be playing polyphonic pieces (several voices) more often, in electric we’ll focus on chords, riffs and solos and with the acoustic we’ll play also chords with different strumming patterns, melodies, solos and lots of flatpicking exercises.

Intermediate to advanced levels. If you want to take your guitar playing more seriously, this is the course for you. After having some control over the basic guitar techniques you may want to take it a little further, improvising, building your own chord progressions and solos and having a next level technique to improve your playing. In Guitar 2 we’ll work with scales, arpeggios, improvising, different picking techniques, more sophisticated harmonies, new chord voicings and tips to play in a group context. We will play blues, jazz and more advanced rock solos and riffs to help you build a strong and confident musical language.

One of the things I’ve been doing over the years is helping candidates to University music courses to get ready for their admission exams and getting the skills needed to begin this new step of their lives successfully. That’s something I really like to do.

About Me

My name is João and I come from Portugal. I'm based in The Hague. I'm a professional musician since 2002 and a music/guitar teacher since 2005, I've played with many bands and artists and I've had hundreds of students over all these years. I started playing guitar in 1993, my father listened to a lot of music and I was always fascinated by it. From the time I started to play my life has been only about music. I loved Nirvana and all the rock bands, played their songs for hours. When I was 18 I joined a Jazz school and that changed everything, started improvising and learning new harmonic concepts.
What I do today is a mix between all these influences and languages. This is exactly what I share with my students, first the passion for music and then the tools and skills needed to be a part of this wonderful world of playing an instrument. Show them the language, the words and help them build their own voice.

I have a bachelor degree in Jazz and Modern Music for the Lusíada University in Lisbon, there I got two distinctions: Universidade Lusíada Merit Award Scholarship (2012-2014) and Universidade Lusíada Merit Award for Best Jazz and Modern Music Finalist (2014).

I'm a 32-year old guitarist and composer based in Den Haag, teaching electric and acoustic guitar, in combination with music theory (if that is of interest to the student). I teach in English or in Greek. I am half Greek and half Scottish and I have been living in the Netherlands for the last 6 years.

My Credentials:

My experience as a guitarist ranges from classical guitar studies, to playing electric guitar in rock bands, as well as experience as an improviser, performer of notated contemporary classical compositions, creator and performer of ambient and electronic music. I also am very experienced in ambient and electronic-influenced guitar music, which has given me an in depth knowledge also of the guitar in combination with technology such as guitar effects, computer software and multichannel setups which expand the audio palette of the guitar. I have written songs, I have written orchestra pieces, I have worked as a DIY home producer, I have released albums, and I've performed in concert halls, rock venues, squats and festivals. I even some experience in beat-making.

My music has been performed in and has taken me to several countries, including Portugal, The Czech Republic, The U.S.A., Canada, Korea, Greece, The U.K., The Netherlands.

My Teaching style:
My emphasis is to teach you based on your interests and your needs. The lessons are based around each individual student. You bring me the music you like and the things you want to learn, and I build my lessons around that.
I've taught students everything from post-rock, to metal, to K-Pop to Nepalese songs... This way the student gets to explore music on their terms, and not based on a pre-decided set of songs or exercises. Alongside this I bring exercises and other songs that help build around the skills we learn through your songs, and help you develop the techniques needed for you to learn to play the music you love. Whatever music excites you I encourage you to bring it to our lesson, as this also gives me a chance to discover some new music !

What's more, depending on your interest, we can also explore music theory, ideas on composition and songwriting, even the basics of how to record your own songs at home.

For experienced players:
If you are an experienced player looking for new challenges and new perspectives, my wide ranging knowledge of music in a large spectrum of music will help you push your playing and knowledge of music into new worlds !

Guitar is a very versatile instrument, used in many different genres, including classical music. For me, my journey with it started somewhere in my early childhood, primarily with listening to my mum's playing of folk songs. What amazed me is the power that music has to make people come together and communicate. So at 10, I formally started my individual relationship with the instrument, studying classical guitar, which has given me some of the greatest pleasures in this life, and I hope it will be my source of joy until my dying day. Currently, I am studying Makam music at the Global Music Department of Codarts, Rotterdam. Students have different aspirations and needs, but in my lessons we can focus on rhythmic variation, tempo, comping, improvisation, ear training, chords, phrasing, articulation, expression - all while learning repertoire. That is how it all comes together, therefore I encourage my students to learn their favourite songs and also repertoire that will strengthen less strong areas of their playing. This means if you want to learn how to play pocket we focus on funk rhythms, if you want to learn how to play straight groove we focus on bossa or latin etc.

With a Bachelor in Jazz Guitar in the pocket - that’s what I mostly play, we can dig into chord melody, single line playing, repertoire and comping in a variety of styles within the jazz idiom.

The first lesson will be a checkup where you are as a student in your musical development, thereafter I will ask about your goals and aspirations and what you’re currently doing to reach them. My role is to oversee this process and share what has helped me in my musical development. I believe instrument lessons need to be practical and be based off concrete exercises that will help you reach the next level. For something to manifest into your playing you have to first get whatever you’re learning into your muscle memory - practice slowly with metronome, continuous repetition over a period of time, then the brain have a greater chance of obtaining the skill. Second step is to gradually increase the tempo and play with a good time feel, by doing this you will have what you’ve learnt in your hands. There are no shortcuts when learning a skill, you simply cannot buy it - you have to earn it!
