Firstly, an icebreaker that would be a chat to get to understand each other and to know what you hope to achieve.

Secondly, the focus would be on what you already know and building your understanding from there. This can be directly linked to every day situations where reading and talking in English is needed.

Finally, an informal assessment would be part of the lesson, no pressure. This is to check your understanding and fluency in English.

About Me

Please let me introduce myself, my name is Elizabeth. I'm fifty-something and I live in a town called Kettering in Northamptonshire. I would describe myself as a homely type of person who likes to read and I have an interest in education. Also, I like to travel sometimes and I like the outdoors and enjoy walks in the park and would like to re-visit the Lake District to walk on those beautiful mountains. I like flowers too. I have a strong interest in healthy eating, health and beauty, astronomy and at times, I like to socialise.

My preference is to teach adults and the times can be agreed between us because I need time to prepare. Then I can put theory into practice, thank you. 🙂

I would like to teach Basic English because it is a non-accredited course. In the following paragraphs, I have outlined how the subject should be taught, so that the student knows what to expect.

• Initial assessment
This would be the first step. A time to listen to the student and answer questions. Then I would ask questions about his/her educational journey and whether there are any Special Needs.

How does the student like to learn? What are his/her aspirations? Is the student a Visual, Audio, Read/Write or Kinesthetic learner? If the student does not know, to look on the internet and take an online test to discover learning preferences.

• Plan the Scheme of Work
This should reflect and support the student's learning preferences and perhaps cater to others styles of learning too but to a lesser degree. I would also discuss with the student what interests them because it helps with planning an engaging Scheme of Work. I would keep it simple so that it can be adjusted accordingly.

• Lesson Plans
These would give a more detailed overview of how the lessons are going to be taught. There would be a title and a list of objectives that the student would need to have achieved by the end of each lesson. I would include informal assessment to check student understanding such as asking questions and listening to the student's answers to gauge understanding of the English Language.This is how I would like to conduct my lessons.

University of Leicester BA Honours degree in Combined Studies Humanities in History, English Studies and Sociology. (It is an external degree.)

Experience / Qualifications

Although my work background has mainly been in education as a teaching assistant, I'm new to tutoring. Nevertheless, I have experience working with adult students supporting them in Functional Skills English and ESOL (English Speakers Other Languages).

I have recently gained my Level 3 Award in Education and Training. I also have degree in Humanities awarded by the University of Leicester from Nene College (It is now called the University of Northampton). Thank you for reading my profile.
