A practical one hour class aiming to prepare students for Section A: Directed Writing (question 1) of the iGCSE English Directed Writing and Composition Exam. Having sent through a past paper and generic parts of the mark scheme in advance of the session, I will introduce the paper and we will work through annotating the source texts, identify key lines of reasoning and discuss how they might be evaluated. I will then share and thoroughly discuss the more specific parts of the mark scheme to explore what counts as evaluation and analysis (for a higher band mark), and explore the difference between implicit and explicit meaning. We will conclude the session with tips and approaches, as suggested by an experienced examiner.

I have over five years of experience in marking this component of the iGCSE First Language English syllabus, and thus secure knowledge of what an examiner can and can’t give marks for!

About Me

From teaching a wide range of ages and abilities in my time teaching at St Vincent College in Gosport, I have taught English from Entry Level / SEN classes to preparing A-level students aiming for A* grades to apply for Oxbridge and Russell Group universities.

I am happy to consult with students before lessons about the best approach, setting work or emailing resources in advance of a seminar-type session, or fully working through them together during our online tutorial. When teaching, I favour an interactive approach, setting a task or questions, allowing adequate thinking time and then discussing answers.

The breadth of my teaching experience makes me highly adaptable as a tutor but, as an experienced examiner of GCSE English and iGCSE English, I have a particular strength in exam preparation for these subjects and good understanding of what an examiner will be looking for, and can or can’t award credit for!

A practical one hour class aiming to prepare students for Section B: Composition (questions 2,3,4, and 5) of the iGCSE English Directed Writing and Composition Exam. Having sent through a past paper and generic parts of the mark scheme in advance of the session, I will introduce the paper and we will work through the different question options. Unlike the session I offer on Section A, most of this session will be spent on understanding what specific approaches gain the best marks for narrative and descriptive responses, understanding the difference between writing to narrate and to describe and if a ‘hybrid’ style of the two can work. We will also spend some time on the commonly made mistakes with this section of the paper.
I have over five years of experience in marking this component of the iGCSE First Language English syllabus, and thus secure knowledge of what an examiner can and can’t give marks for!
