I have been teaching Spanish for more than 15 years and I have worked in several institutes and embassies as a teacher and cultural bridge. I am currently living in Berlin where I am developing a personal project and working as a teacher online and in face-to-face classes. Normally I am interested in generating a creative bond with my students and that is why I work with many of them for relatively long periods of time. In the classes I am interested in having a solid grammar structure but the emphasis is on conversation. In this way I feel that a rich and interesting interaction is generated where, honestly, I myself learn from my students‘ experiences and points of view. I am convinced, as a language learner myself, that learning a language is not simply a tool for communication. I feel that to learn another language is to open oneself to another code or way of thinking and perceiving the world. For example, Romance languages (Spanish, Italian, French, etc.) think and feel the world in a different way than Germanic languages (English, German, etc.) I am fascinated by these differences and similarities. Traveling in Japan, I could only admire the beauty of how we represent the world through our language. I feel that in a world that is becoming increasingly depersonalized and where artificial intelligence and algorithms seem to creep into every corner of our lives, maintaining human, imperfect and warm contacts is a form of resistance. In that sense, both in my project with sacred languages such as philosophy and astrology and in language classes, I try to maintain the human dimension and respect the beauty and multidimensionality of communication. Apart from my background in philosophy at university, I am interested in art, politics, culture as an expression of an epoch, psychoanalysis, comparative religions, etc. In this context, with many of my more advanced students we work with texts and films where our interests intersect. For the more beginning classes the emphasis is also on conversation, but with a grammatical framework and progression. That is why I am interested in understanding the students‘ objectives. As an Italian Opera singer, I help since many years singers with the right pronunciation of the repertoire they sing, helping them in shaping the language in a clear way, which also helps the singing. Our lesson will involve speaking, pronunciation exercises and singing. We will start the lesson by reading the text and finding the right direction and emphasis. We will focus on the sounds and how to produce them. In the second part of the lesson, we will apply all of the above to the singing!

Ciao! I have been teaching Italian for the past twelve years. I have taught privately and at language schools like La Scuola Italiana del Greenwich Village in New York and ItalCultura, the school of the Italian Cultural Institute of Chicago. During the first few lessons I will make sure you have the tools to pronounce and identify all the sounds of the Italian language. This step is essential! And it will make everything easier afterwards. When I teach Italian I try to avoid all the things that I hated as a language student. We will use real songs, real literature, do real conversation and storytelling. When you are engaging all your senses it is easier to keep your mind relaxed and to remember new words. I will customize my materials to your interests, needs and desired pace. And because you are learning from a native Italian you will also learn about Italian culture and history. You will absorb a way of thinking, not just grammar rules. I speak a bunch of languages so I know a thing or two about how tedious language classes can be. My terrifying French teacher in middle school made us repeat the same fake dialogue from a really bad book ad nauseam, over and over and over again. Some of those dialogues are carved in my brain: “Bonjour, je m’appelle Richard Drapeau, je viens du Canada, je suis Canadien...” When I teach Italian I try to avoid all the things that I hated as a language student. We will use real songs, real literature, do real conversation and storytelling and we will go on “talking walks” because when you are engaging all your senses it is easier to keep your mind relaxed and to remember new words. I hold a degree in Lingue e Letterature Straniere (Foreign Languages and Literatures) from Università Roma Tre (equivalent to an American MA) and a Master’s of Fine Arts in Interdisciplinary Arts and Media from Columbia College Chicago. I wrote a thesis about translating a long epic poem by W. H. Auden and I tried to ride a horse across America.
