Understanding the Global System: Introduction to International Relations for ALL
From 11.6 £ /h
The course gives an introduction to international politics from a theoretical perspective. The discipline of international relations looks at political interactions at the global level. In the context of this course, we will look at states as the most important actors in international politics, although we will also look at the influence of, for example, international governmental organizations (such as the United Nations) and non-governmental organizations (such as Amnesty International or terrorist groups like the Islamic State). How can the behaviour of states and other actors be explained? This question is central to the course. Assumptions from various schools of thought, such as realism, liberalism, and constructivism are discussed extensively. In the course, the most important insights that these theories have presented are dealt with on the basis of concrete examples. Therefore, attention will also be given to specific issues and developments in international politics, such as globalization, regionalism, terrorism, war and peace, human rights, poverty and development, climate change and nuclear non-proliferation.

Education
I graduated from Leiden University with a BSc in International Relations and Organisations. I completed this degree 'Cum Laude' with honours. My thesis research was a qualitative, interpretivist piece entitled 'The Alliance Security Dilemma, NATO & Strategic Consensus'. for which I was awarded a 9/10 and nominated for best thesis in Political Science 2022. I have also taken courses in Comparative Politics, Global Security, Global History, International Development and others. Although I am well versed in International Relations generally, my expertise lies in international and European security, grand strategy and foreign policy analysis.
I am currently undertaking an MSc in Political Science with a specialisation in International Politics also at Leiden University. I am continuing with this same strain of research.

Experience / Qualifications
My current role is at the British Embassy in The Hague, where I am part of the Policy Team. I deal mostly with British-Dutch bilateral affairs, but I also have experience with International Law, the OPCW and other multilateral affairs. I was fortunate enough to attend the 2023 UK-NL Joint Diplomatic Training at the Foreign Office in London. I can therefore provide a practical, real-world insight into International Relations.
Previously, I was also part of the Implementation Support Unit of the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention. Here I was able to gain a rich insight into an international treaty, and the important work of civil society.
