Learn to Play Old-Time Fiddle (Appalachian and more)
From 44.45 £ /h
I teach Old-Time fiddle, beginning and intermediate level. I prefer students who have some experience with fiddle, violin, or bowed string instruments, but I will accept students with no experience, too.
To make the most of your learning experience, weekly, one-hour lessons are highly encouraged.
I will teach you fiddle bowing techniques, cross tuning, low tuning, learning tunes from ear, jam information, the social aspects of Old-Time music, as well as history of the tunes and the source fiddlers.
My specialty is cross-over students, especially those coming from a background in classical music. Can't get your violin to sound like a fiddle? I can help.

About Me
I've been playing stringed instruments for 40 years, and have been teaching them for 33 years. I've played everything from classical to Irish rock. I've played in tango orchestras, Medieval and Renaissance consorts, contra dance bands, string quartets, pit orchestras, folk ensembles, and rock bands.
My teaching style is laid back, and student-focused. I understand that each student learns differently, and I tailor each lesson to the student and their needs. This is especially important with folk music and aural traditions since one universal teaching method does not exist. This amplifies the need to acknowledge each student as an individual in order to help them learn and progress.
I teach American Old-Time music, and my specialty is teaching "cross-over" students, especially those who have a classical background. The violin is physically the same instrument as the fiddle, but the techniques are so different that there are specific, effective methods I use with these students.
Teaching is something I love, and I take great pride in passing along skills to my students and watching them progress.
