The Piano Studio of Michael offers private piano lessons to students of all ages and abilities in the Vienna area. Michael teaches from his home in the 12th district, Meidling, or can travel to your home for lessons.

Under Michael's teaching, students will study proper piano technique and musicianship in a creative and fun way. Lessons are catered to the goals of each student - whether you are itching to play the latest pop song or a nocturne by Chopin! No matter the style of music, emphasis is always placed on proper technical skills and correct posture in addition to development of aural and reading skills. All lessons are taught in English - a great way for kids or adults to practice their speaking and comprehension skills in a friendly environment!

About Me

I am a 25-year-old native of Santa Barbara, California. I began studying piano at the age of 7 and fell in love with the instrument! I earned my bachelors of music in Piano Performance at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music and my Masters of Music in Piano Accompaniment at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London. I am continuing my studies with Julius Drake in Lieder performance at the Kunstuniversität in Graz and work in Vienna as a freelance pianist with singers while giving recitals throughout Europe and the United States.

I have performed in the United Sates, Germany, and around the UK, at the Barbican Hall, Wigmore Hall, LSO St. Luke's, Cadogan Hall, Oxford Lieder Festival, Leeds Lieder Festival, and on broadcasts for BBC Radio 3. I made my BBC Proms debut this summer in a recital of American music honoring the centennial of Leonard Bernstein with mezzo-soprano Wallis Giunta. I am a prizewinner of the International Helmut Deutsch Lied Competition and a recipient of the Somerset Song Prize for best pianist as well as the piano accompaniment prize from the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London. A recipient of many awards as a solo pianist, I gave my debut recital in the Belz-Parker Young Artist Series and have performed with orchestras throughout the United States. I was the bandleader/pianist for the jazz combo Cut Time, which performed throughout Southern California, and studied jazz piano with Professor Barry Green at the Guildhall School.

Experience / Qualifications

While at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, Istudied Piano Pedagogy and developed my skills as a teacher. I have a wide experience of teaching students of all ages. With young students and beginners I emphasize good technique and posture at the piano, both development of aural skills (playing by ear) and music reading skills (playing by sight), and musical imagination and creativity. With intermediate to advanced students, I focus on helping a student find their artistic voice, refine their technique, and build their repertoire and knowledge of music theory and music history.

In California, I developed an introductory course for intermediate to advanced pianists focusing on improvisation and basic jazz harmony to build skills in playing jazz and pop songs from lead sheets. Elements of improvisation and jazz/pop harmony can be incorporated in any lesson according to the wishes of the student.
