I’ve successfully helped mentor people on their journey into creative writing and in the classes we will take the journey looking at ways to help overcome obstacles that might be stopping or blocking your progresses, or helping you to continue writing you may have started. We will do this with a mixture of looking at your work and thinking of strategies to help you overcome any potential blocks. Although I have a particular interest in writing for plays, (I am a playwright and published poet), this class is for also for those wanting write creatively.

Close analysis is something you will need whether you are taking English literature exams or whether you are thinking of writing your own poems. It always helps to know how to analyse one first. In this class, you will learn key tips on how to improve your close analysis, specifically working on spotting and defining literary devices while also making links to how they function. Focusing on the structure, tone, and narrative voice, you will learn how to dissect a poem, speak about it, or write about it, effectively adding a new layer to your argument. It will be an accessible and concrete way to address these abstract concepts of literature, helping you further your knowledge in the world of poetry.

You will understand what writing is best created by you, i.e short stories, poetry, blog posts, business sites, novels. If you already have found a niche, brilliant! Together we will identify your strong points in creative writing and alternatively, points that you need to strengthen. We will decide what piece of writing you will work on, big or small and adjust, adapt and alter your writing technique to pursue your writing with strength.

In the modern world, the significance of poetry is overlooked. From Aristotle to Derrida (the range is not comprehensive), literary theory has maintained that a poem's power is measured in its affect. Throughout this course, our goal will not be to make inscrutable poetic analysis - though the first part of the lesson will be spent analysing word choice, meter, line length and spaces of an English poem written between pre-modernism and postmodernism. Rather, through our perusal of poetic form we will be able to ground our work, somewhat modestly, in the English poetic tradition. Before the first class you will send me some of your own work so I know how to build or refine aesthetic temperament. I have been writing poetry for ten years and two years ago I published a chapbook at a press with competitive standards, and I am currently working on a full-length collection. If you wish to take up poetry seriously, time is needed and an eye for detail is essential. I look forward to us broadening our aesthetic sensibilities together.

Always wanted to write a screenplay? Let's get started! This class will walk you through the nitty gritty formatting basics as well as the foundations of narrative writing--plot, structure, tone, character, etc. As a practicing playwright and screenwriter, I am intimately familiar with the process of narrative storytelling. I received my MFA in Dramatic Writing from New York University's prestigious Tisch School of the Arts and B.A. in Theatre from Middlebury College in Vermont. My screenplays have won awards at the Swedish International Film Festival and the Athena Film Festival. Meanwhile my most recent short play, 9.5, won the Theatre Masters Take Ten Festival and was published by Samuel French.
