I am a professional opera singer, currently studying a Master's at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Having performed numerous operas, oratorios and song recitals, I have a in depth and far reaching knowledge of the classical vocal repertoire and a good command of the musical theatre repertoire. Whether you are using it professionally or for fun, I am a strong believer that establishing excellent technique is essential to developing a voice. I work from the premise that no two voices are the same and I tailor lessons to suit my students. We will work on technique, repertoire, interpretation and, where appropriate, language skills. Together, we can work on building a healthy voice and compiling a book of repertoire to help you prepare for exams or recitals. The aim of a lesson is to achieve vocal freedom, which will allow the student to approach repertoire healthily and confidently without fear of the voice giving out. Whatever age, skill level or intention for using the voice, this will ultimately make singing more enjoyable! I have experience coaching choirs and working with young people, particularly with Cambiata North West. I have given masterclasses and singing days, most recently at Saffron Walden County High School. If you would like to organise a lesson, please do not hesitate to contact me via the details on the 'Contact' tab. During the COVID - 19 lock down and social distancing period, I will be teaching remotely via Skype and Zoom. As well as singing tuition, I am also happy to tutor music theory and academic music programmes up to and including A-Level Music. For young people, the aspects of performance and study go hand in hand and I believe it is important to offer support in all aspects of music!

I have extensive training in music and singing and have attended The Brit School, gaining Triple Distinction* as well as Trinity Laban Conservatoire, where I graduated this year with a first class honours degree. For five months of my degree I was awarded an Erasmus scholarship to study Norwegian folk music at The Grieg Academy, Norway. This trip helped to sculpt my music and my current projects take a lot of influence from folk as well as free jazz and free improvisation. I have taught privately for two years after training for eight years. I teach budding vocalists of all ages. I have helped prepare students for exams as well as encouraged students back into singing after years out of practice. I like to take a creative approach with students, to engage with them about short and long term goals as well as encouraging them to keep practice diaries to document their progress and for self evaluation. I am very passionate about teaching as I believe it is one of the most rewarding activities - watching someone grow as they learn not only the basics of technique but when they start to develop their own sound. I believe I am an inspiring teacher and firm but fair when it comes to homework and discipline. I provide support to the students and have received feedback showing I am encouraging and helpful after each and every lesson - “ 5/5, Fantastic lessons - Rowan is great at giving feedback and at helping me set, review and achieve my personal goals. I always come away believing I have improved my knowledge and feeling inspired.” Jasmine Gorsuch, previous student. Over the last couple of years I have performed in many settings in the UK, Norway and China and have invaluable experience gigging with various ensembles. I can help students with how to lead a band confidently once they are at that level. I am also proficient in teaching composition and music theory as well as some more advanced jazz theory and harmony. I also have knowledge in music business and event planning as well as how to market yourself as an artist.

Trusted teacher: Madalene is an internationally renowned vocalist (having performed as Maddee, Madeleine and Darshan) with extensive experience in voice coaching and teaching the art of songwriting. She studied vocal teaching, songwriting, art history and musical performance with the Berklee College of Music (USA), the Open University (UK) and the University of Oslo (Norway). She gained her higher qualifications in contemporary music performance with the University of West London. I am specialized in preparing students for the various academic qualifications in vocal performance (recital) offered by the London College of Music Examinations (LCME) of the University of West London. The diplomas cover a range of the first-year undergraduate to master level qualifications, all fully accredited in the UK and carrying transferable academic credits for use at other (international) universities. Exams consist of a performance element, counting for 80%, and a short demonstration of theoretical knowledge (discussion, sight-reading or program notes, depending on the diploma). The diplomas are: - The Diploma of the London College of Music (DipLCM) in vocal performance recital is of an equivalent standard to a 1st-year undergraduate module (RQF Level 4, EQF Level 5) and the performance element is examined through a 25-30 minutes performance. The diploma is worth 90 CATS (the British equivalent of 45 ECTS) academic credits. - The Associate of the London College of Music (ALCM) in vocal performance recital is of an equivalent standard to a 2nd-year undergraduate module (RQF and EQF Level 5) and the performance element is examined through a 35-40 minutes performance. The diploma is worth 120 CATS (the British equivalent of 60 ECTS) academic credits. - The Licentiate of the London College of Music (LLCM) in vocal performance recital is of an equivalent standard to a final year undergraduate module (RQF and EQF Level 6) and the performance element is examined through a 45-50 minutes performance. The diploma is worth 180 CATS (British equivalent of 90 ECTS) academic credits. - The Fellow of the London College of Music (FLCM) in vocal performance is of an equivalent standard to a Masters module (RQF and EQF Level 7) and the performance element is examined through a 50-60 minutes performance. The diploma is worth 225 CATS (the British equivalent of 112.5 ECTS) academic credits. In all cases, candidates are required to achieve 75% to attain the diploma qualification. Exam preparation will consist of approximately 30 hours of private online tuition by me, depending on your current level. Do note that entry requirements may apply, so feel free to contact me for advice on this. In the UK, LCM's diploma examinations are regulated by Ofqual, Qualifications Wales and CCEA at Levels 4 to 7 of the Regulated Qualifications Framework. The diplomas are also included in the European Qualifications Framework (EQF). Additionally, LCM diplomas in music are mapped against the BMus and MMus Performance / Composition degree courses at the University of West London, which are validated by the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA). BMus and MMus students who hold an LCM diploma are automatically eligible to bypass the relevant module or modules on the degree course. Other degree-awarding institutions (including those outside the UK) may, on a discretionary basis, accept LCM diplomas as Approved Prior Learning (APL) on a similar basis. This may assist in your admittance to degree studies at a conservatory or university and possibly provide dispensation for certain modules in your further studies. Even if you are not interested in obtaining an academic qualification, feel free to approach me for private online singing and/or songwriting lessons. The hourly fee for this is published elsewhere on this page. Experience She was one of the original members of the 90s UK hit band ‘Steps’, supported other artists on tour and went on to have a successful solo career; she reached top positions in dance and club music charts with her hit single ‘Follow Love’, which she co-wrote. Madalene was the first-ever foreign act to win a Malta Music Award, in 2010, and she supported Peter Andre at the 2013 edition. She has appeared regularly at music concerts and talent competitions across Europe and Asia, both as a performer and/or panel judge. After making good on an invitation by the BBC to give an in-house concert at the Golders Green Hippodrome Studios, Madalene was asked to return for a recording session at the BBC Maida Vale studios. Over the years she has been a frequent guest on radio programs, promoting music education and discussing developments in the music industry.
