*** Composition lessons with Dr Jonathan *** I am a composer and educator based in South-East London who has recently obtained a Ph.D. in composition from the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, having previously studied at Cambridge and the Royal Academy of Music. My passion for music feeds directly into my passion for teaching, and I hope that I can inspire as many people as possible to deepen their love of music by learning to understand it from the inside out. I have been teaching music for over 10 years both in schools and as a private tutor, ranging from interactive workshops with primary students to university-level one-to-one composition. I have previously been the resident composition teacher at Eton College (2015-17) and City of London School for Girls (2017-20), as well as delivering workshops at schools around the country in a visiting capacity. I am as comfortable working with students taking their very first steps in theory and composition as I am with those who are more advanced and can teach across a variety of styles and genres including classical, jazz, rock, and musical theatre. As a tutor, I always seek a student-led approach, adapting content and delivery to individual tutees’ needs. Above all, whether in theory or composition, I always try to enthuse students by conveying my own love of music and encouraging theirs. No element of music or musical development can be considered in isolation, and so I seek to link up whatever a student is working on with their wider musicianship and listening – classical or otherwise – to put things into context. Another important part of my teaching practice is preparing tailor-made resources for students which are theirs to keep, ensuring that any material covered can be revised and consolidated. The core of my composition teaching is of course discussing and dissecting students’ music, but alongside this go technical exercises, score analysis, music history and live listening which feedback into the compositional process and put the music written into context. Most importantly, I meet students on their own stylistic ground, helping them to achieve the best possible realization of their personal artistic ambition while also encouraging them to listen and explore as widely as possible.

Trusted teacher: I am a friendly, patient, and professional Piano, Composition, Production, Music Theory, and DJ teacher from London, based in Cambridge. I have 11 years of teaching experience, and have taught pupils from 5 years old to 65! I began composition lessons with Darren Bloom at Forest School, Snaresbrook, and was awarded a scholarship to the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, followed by a place at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, where I completed an MMus in Composition in 2019. My previous tutors include Richard Ayres, Wim Henderickx, Richard Causton, Edwin Roxburgh, Ed Bennett, Joe Cutler, and Howard Skempton. I have also taken master classes from Rebecca Saunders, Mario Garuti, Anna Korsun, and Colin Matthews. I was the winner of the Orchestre Nouvelle Generation Composers Competition 2016/17, and the Birmingham Conservatoire Orchestral Composition Prize 2015. Distinguished ensembles and performers who have performed my works include the DoelenKwartet, HERMESensemble, Syzygy Quartet, Ossian Ensemble, Noszferatu, Decibel, David Le Page, Patrick Johnson, Sara Minelli, Rowland Sutherland, and Colin Alexander. My compositions have been featured at world-famous festivals including the String Quartet Biennale Amsterdam and TROMP Percussion Festival and at venues such as Kings Place and Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ, as well as various venues throughout Europe, North America, and South Africa. In addition to classical composition, I also write advert soundtracks on a regular basis for clients such as GHD, Lanvin, Japanese Vogue, Mariana Jungman (London Fashion Week), Cent Magazine, and Face Lace. I have completed a number of scores for award-winning short films 'Wanted' by Graeme Montgomery, and 'Genesis' by Beatrix Haxby. I am also a bassoonist, having studied with Adam Mackenzie (New London Chamber Ensemble) and John Orford (London Sinfonietta). I was a member of Essex Youth Orchestra for four years, and have written a new repertoire for the instrument including a number of Concert Studies and also a Bassoon Quartet. I am also an active DJ under the alias 'Delian Sound', playing eclectic sets from Garage to Jungle. I studied with international artists including Kasey Riot and Noah Priddle at the London Sound Academy and have performed in venues such as SET, Dalston alongside artists including Chiminyo and D’vo. Tutoring Experience: From 2009-2011 I taught Drumkit to students aged between 10-15 at a local Rock & Pop School. I've also been involved in a number of music courses for children between 2009-2014 as a Supervisor / Sound Technician. In 2016 I began giving private lessons and built up a group of over 20 pupils ranging from 5-year-olds to adults through positive word-of-mouth. Between April-July 2017, I was contacted by a local primary school to give small group lessons in Piano and Guitar. Alongside my studies in Amsterdam, I continued to teach a similarly wide age range of pupils. Since 2019 I have taught Composition & Musicianship at the Saffron Walden Centre for Young Musicians. I have an Enhanced DBS check, available upon request. Tutoring Approach: My philosophy in Music Tuition is to improve the student's technique through exercises and pieces which they enjoy. I also provide general music education as I believe in a holistic approach, and increasing their passion for music which will increase their motivation for practice and improvement.

I have extensive training in music and singing and have attended The Brit School, gaining Triple Distinction* as well as Trinity Laban Conservatoire, where I graduated this year with a first class honours degree. For five months of my degree I was awarded an Erasmus scholarship to study Norwegian folk music at The Grieg Academy, Norway. This trip helped to sculpt my music and my current projects take a lot of influence from folk as well as free jazz and free improvisation. I have taught privately for two years after training for eight years. I teach budding vocalists of all ages. I have helped prepare students for exams as well as encouraged students back into singing after years out of practice. I like to take a creative approach with students, to engage with them about short and long term goals as well as encouraging them to keep practice diaries to document their progress and for self evaluation. I am very passionate about teaching as I believe it is one of the most rewarding activities - watching someone grow as they learn not only the basics of technique but when they start to develop their own sound. I believe I am an inspiring teacher and firm but fair when it comes to homework and discipline. I provide support to the students and have received feedback showing I am encouraging and helpful after each and every lesson - “ 5/5, Fantastic lessons - Rowan is great at giving feedback and at helping me set, review and achieve my personal goals. I always come away believing I have improved my knowledge and feeling inspired.” Jasmine Gorsuch, previous student. Over the last couple of years I have performed in many settings in the UK, Norway and China and have invaluable experience gigging with various ensembles. I can help students with how to lead a band confidently once they are at that level. I am also proficient in teaching composition and music theory as well as some more advanced jazz theory and harmony. I also have knowledge in music business and event planning as well as how to market yourself as an artist.

Guitar lessons in South East London. Learn how to play guitar, write songs, pass grades, or learn music theory. (Peckham)
Lou
Highly recommended! It was really nice to receive a message from Lou regarding our search for guitar lessons! Due to corona and a closed school, my 13 year old had more time to play guitar and she wanted to learn more about composition/scales. How cool that for online lessons, distance is no obstacle (we live in Luxembourg). We highly recommend Lou's enthusiastic and professional lessons!
