Cello is the most beautiful instrument there is. From low growling to singing like a bird, everything is possible on the four strings of this bowed instrument. The lesson focuses on technical challenges, and musical vision and development. From Bach's suites through romantic etudes to contemporary music, there is a wonderful repertoire. Let's discover this together and see what suits you.
Extra information
Unfortunately I cannot provide an instrument. I do want to give advice when renting or buying a cello.

About Me
In my daily life I play in the cello group of the Concertgebouw Orchestra. We play sinfonic concerts all over the world. Although I earn my daily bread playing the cello in one of the best orchestras in the world, I would prefer to call myself an amateur. Because I like music.
Education
I had my first cello lesson at the age of 10. Soon I was allowed to join a string quartet, and always liked to play in increasingly better orchestras.
Study followed in Germany at the Folkwang Hochschule Essen.
In 2006, after 2 years at the Juilliard School in New York, I obtained my Graduate Diploma.
Experience / Qualifications
During my studies I had one year of education in pedagogy, the rest was mainly artistic. I like to be able to share my experiences with the cello with children from 8 to adults.
I haven't been teaching much lately, but I would like to do it more often again.

Solfège is one of these indispensable tools that contributes to the development of musical hearing. With that a basis can be formed for the general musical understanding.

Through my role as a student assistant of various theory subjects (including solfège) at the Conservatory of Amsterdam, I have had the opportunity to teach students with many different ages and backgrounds.

My approach:
• The lessons are always in line with the environment and the theoretical knowledge that the student already has.
• Creative thinking is used in the lessons. This is done, for example, by improvising melodies or coming up with a second voice based on feeling.
• I also encourage critical thinking and listening. I do this by not giving too much pre-chewed information, but by an experiential approach.
• In practice I use different solfège methods (tonic sol-fa, or using numbers in a scale). My experience has shown that not every system is ideal for everyone. That is why I am flexible in my approach and I will always coordinate this
on my students.

The classes are specialized in Electric Bass and Musical Theory lessons, but I also teach basic guitar, singing and musical production.
I use Ableton 10 for my lessons, alongside with different book methods that I customize according to your necessities.
I keep a personal folder of all my students to check the progress and I assign homework after every lesson.

My name is Ben (26), and I'm a certified drum teacher with about 15 years of experience behind the kit. Previously I have studied jazz drums at Kunstuniversitat of Graz. Currently I'm teaching at multiple institutions in Amsterdam such as: Lucky Beat Music Club, United Pop, British School of Amsterdam.

My classes take place on my boathouse at Weesperzijde, however if you wish I can also come to your place. I can guarantee you that after your first lesson you already will be able to play a simple rock beat!

I can teach you the following:
- Groove
- Speed & Stamina
- Technique
- Music Theory
- Music Production (Beat making) in Ableton
- Controlling dynamics
- DJing
- Body Percussion
- Reading music
- Composition
And much more...

When it comes to teaching, creative lessons and positive energy are my pillars. I do approach every student differently, making sure I am able to show them what is possible on the instrument. I certainly believe that everyone is capable of learning to play the very basics after a short period of time. I do think that since drumming goes back all the way to the primal ages, we all have the drummer inside us, it just hasn't awakened yet. I want to be that person who will awake the drummer inside of who is wanting to learn. I feel fortunate that I'm able to do what I've studied and get to live my passion. There is nothing better than to see a student improve, develop and see when they finally start to "get it".

Therefore I adapt my teaching methodologies to the tastes and needs of every student. Throughout every lesson, we will work on three main courses of development: technical aspects, theoretical knowledge, and performative practice.

Are you tired of reading tabs yet not being able to play your favorite songs on the guitar? Are you tired of putting a lot of effort into practice but still not meeting your guitar goals? Or do you just want to pick up a few songs on the guitar to impress your friends/colleagues without the hassle of committing to some serious music theory?

If your answers to all of this are a resounding YES! then congratulations, you're in the right place.

I believe the biggest lesson I can share with you about playing the guitar is: practice! and inspiration. Practise is critical, and you can't practice if you're uninspired.
Do you want to:

a. Learn easy songs and entertain people?
b. Play live or record?
c. Move on quickly to an electric guitar?
d. Get the blues/country vibes?
e. Get the flamenco (Phrygian) vibes?
f. Play percussive guitar?
g. Play instrumental guitar (no singing)?
h. Cover pop songs?
i. Compose?!?!?!?

On the very first meeting, we will discuss your desired guitar goals and realize if I'd be able to help you with them. If you do choose to go ahead with me for guitar classes, the curriculum will look something like this:

1. Music appreciation (this is important for being inspired! the more videos you watch the better! I have playlists you can follow for now and develop your own taste in guitar playing).
2. Finding your way on the fretboard.
3. Finger exercises.
4. Fingerstyle picking/ plucking (depending on the genres that inspire you the most now).
5. Scales, arpeggios, chords, and chord families.
6. Cover songs.
7. Music theory.
8. Keeping up with the tempo (not Kardashians 😛 )
9. Improvisation and play by ear (or eyes)

In professional classes, they'll teach you tempo way earlier but I think it kills the mood for learning. Hence, that is something I intend to cover later. Realistically, we can partially complete steps 1 through 6. Steps 7, 8, and 9 will indeed take a lot of time.

So, what are you waiting for? If you like my vibe and have a passion for music, feel free to join my classes!

Happy guitaring!

Learn to understand the language of music!

We’ll work on the most important aspects of music theory and ear training which includes:

solfegio (sight-reading),
interval hearing and singing,
scales knowledge
note reading.

Singing “false” or otherwise, out of tune, is not only a matter of a vocal technique but very much your ability to hear, recognise and recreate tones and sounds.

By working on ear training you’ll improve your intonation and hearing abilities. All these are needed to sing in tune, improvise melodies, sing runs and riffs and harmonise melodies (create second voice) with ease.

Sight-reading will help you sing from notes which can prove helpful and useful when singing in a choir or working on a musical project where music sheets are in use.

Scales will help you in expanding your musicality and singing notes you would otherwise not find in the basic ABC of melodies. They open your ears to new sounds and unlock musical possibilities. They are helpful when wanting to create songs, interesting melodies and chords.

All these skills are compulsory for anyone wishing to enter higher music education. These lessons will prepare you for passing your theory exams as well as help you to become more understanding of musical rules.

You'll learn how to use the voice in the proper way, starting by your natural speech and developing it to find your own sound. I have experience in both Pop and Jazz styles (a Bachelor in Jazz Singing and a degree in Jazz Composition), so it's possible to study songs from both this repertoires. I also give Music Theory Lessons, to make the student develop his/her own style and musical sensibility and, in the case of Jazz, to know how to improvise on different chord changes and jazz styles.

As a musician, you spend a significant amount of time in the practice room. It’s nice to make this time as enjoyable as possible while also maximizing efficiency. In this class, you’ll receive individualized coaching on the structure of your practice time, as well as practice strategies to boost learning.

During a lesson we will work together to assess your goals for practice, what is working well for you, and what areas need improvement. You’ll also learn how to structure your practice time to improve accuracy and help you learn new material faster. The course can be designed as a trajectory over several sessions to meet a long-term practice or performance goal, but you’ll be surprised at just how much the impact of even a single session can make on your playing.

Your brain works hard to strengthen neural pathways and make new connections, both while you practice your instrument and in the days after a practice session. You already think about *what* to practice, let’s consider together *how* you practice.
