Private or group English lessons for adults or children
From 23.22 £ /h
I am currently offering private or group English lessons for school-aged students and adults who already have some prior knowledge of English.
School-aged students:
I enjoy tailoring lessons to the individual and figuring out how to best encourage them to find enthusiasm and confidence in the subject. I think the benefit with private tuition is that, if a student is struggling, we have the time to go back to basics to build a good grounding in the subject matter so that they can confidently progress without gaps in their knowledge. In all cases, I like to keep the school curriculum as a good basis for what they need to know, but going beyond this, being creative and building an enjoyment and understanding of the subject leads to true learning.
Because each student is different, I would like to talk to you or the student themselves (if appropriate) about what they need to know and what their problems are etc. so that I can make some suggestions as to how to proceed.
Furthermore, I find that teaching in small groups of similar abilities can add a very beneficial dynamic - the students enjoy it more and we can have meaningful discussions, which I beleive really aids learning.
Adult lessons:
I offer in-depth help to those who would like to improve their professional English and obtain a more native-like style, in particular with their writing.
I was an editor of a short story magazine (Out of Print Magazine) and worked as a proofreader of academic work, often helping non-native speakers of English edit papers being prepared for publication, or helping university students with their theses or dissertations. I enjoy grammar and explaining conventions and enabling students to understand how to write in a native-type way independently.
If you have an intermediate to advanced level of English but feel you want to push your skills further, I would love to help you.
However, please bare in mind that I am a UK native so the writing conventions I use and know the best are British English.

About Me
I am a native English speaker who loves languages and loves teaching!
I have mostly lived and worked in the UK, but have also lived in Sweden, the Netherlands, India and now Germany, so I know what it is like to engage with a new culture and a new language. In fact, I am in the process of learning German at the moment and speak Swedish (although not well enough to teach in this medium).
I spent some time editing and proofreading, but found that what gives me the most satisfaction is working with people and helping them (for example when I could sit with a client and go through, in detail, how they can learn from my edits). This is why I worked in education for some time, but I also worked with people with learning disabilities outside an educational setting.
Simply, I love seeing people progress - whether it be in knowledge, confidence or suddenly finding a subject they previously didnt like enjoyable.

Experience / Qualifications
* Editorial experience: Previous Editor of Out of Print Magazine where I judged submissions for the regular issues, but also the competitions we ran in conjuction with a newspaper (Daily News Analysis) and edited the selected stories.
* Academic English: I am proofreader of academic work, helping non-native (and sometimes native) speakers of English edit their professional or university work.
* Teaching in schools: I have worked in schools and privately back in the UK, mainly teaching English (but also Maths and Science) to both primary and pre-university students. In schools I have delivered targeted English interventions of my own design to classes and worked actively with the school to give struggling students extra support.
*Private tuition: I have delivered tuition in English, Maths, Science and Public Speaking in small classes and one-to-one sessions. I always work with the student's school material and follow their curriculum, but also stretching the content of the lessons beyond this to encourage independent learning, and an active interest and enthusiasm for the subject matter. Furthermore, some of my students have had English as a second language.
*Special educational needs students: Some of my past students have had learning disabilities and/or behavioural problems, or have had very low levels of literacy (through teaching in specialist schools).
