Ever wanted to play guitar like a rockstar? Maybe you have plans to join a band, just play for fun or maybe even become a youtube guitar star.

However you want to play, this course will take you on some very simple steps starting with the basics of guitar (if you're a complete beginner)and going on to explore several different rock genres until you decide which route you would like to take!

We'll go over several fun exercises and classic rock/pop songs so you can start to play over backing tracks very quickly and build your confidence in becoming a competent guitar player!

Extra information

For online lessons, you'll preferably need a laptop and a printer so that I can send you some music to play. An electric guitar is more suited to rock playing but an acoustic guitar is also fine to start with.

About Me

I have been teaching guitar in Edinburgh and East Lothian for over 16 years now. I have taught children as young as 5 to teenagers and adults of all ages. I've prepared school children for their exams, taught groups of people to play together in a band and inspired adults to take up a new hobby!

In 2012 I worked as a project musician for the renowned SAGE Gateshead and more recently for Lamp House Music School where over 15 of my pupils performed in their annual summer concert in Haddington.

I get a lot of joy and satisfaction from teaching music, especially guitar and it is great to see some of my pupils who have gone on to write their own music and play in bands themselves. I believe the best way to approach the lessons is to keep it fun and be able to adapt to every pupil in a different way allowing them to progress quicker!

Violinist, violist, and Scottish composer, doctoral student in contemporary music, graduated from a master of musicology (University of Edinburgh) and a license of higher conservatory (Royal Northern College of Music), I offer courses to enthusiastic students and dedicated, in preparation for auditions, concerts or competitions, to students of all levels and ages who want to study classical music, contemporary or improvisation.

I have been writing songs now for 30 years, including being asked to write lyrics for local charities and for special occasions. Songwriting theory and musical theory and compositions can often take the fun out of lifting and playing music - whether its a guitar, microphone, drum kit!

These 1 hour sessions give the customer an opportunity to explore musical styles, rhythms, while personalising a song for their own use. Every song created will be supplied in an electronic copy, with the lyrics displayed in a certificate explaining the background to the song/ lyrics/ tune etc.

Option1 : Tutor and customer discuss the scope of the song - whwether the song is to be personal - about someone, somewhere, a particular event - whether the song is to be uplifting or melancholy, with distortion, or smooth? These personalised songs can be so well received; especially with a copy of a certificate explaining why it was written, when it was written and for whom.

Option 2: The Random Song - pick some random words and create a masterpiece; see the story come to life as the song verses merge into a meaningful chorus.... or let the fun begin, and let the children ( small and grown up) have loads of ideas which randomly converge into YOUR song! Can be done in person as part of a 'party' or online over Teams etc.

No two sessions are ever the same; and multiple members can dial in if you want them to share in the Songwriting process!

Every session comes with an e version of the recorded song, and an electronic copy of the certificate, showing the lyrics and details of the songwriter, date created/recorded.

Music theory is crucial in order to communicate with other musicians and also crucial to help under your instruments. However, it is a hard topic to understand and can be taught in a complicated way but I have been taught some great techniques that make learning music theory much simpler. I am a college student studying music at a HND level and before that I had an A every year for music in my SQA Exams so I can teach anyone up to Higher Music.
I can teach online and in person, it is all up to personal choice.

The possibilities open to a guitar player are as varied and vibrant as all of music itself. From campfire strumming to bebop improvisation, classical interpretation to amped-up rock, guitarists have access to a wide range of ways to express themselves, expand their physical and mental capabilities and simply have fun. This course will help you along your guitar journey.

I can teach from the ABRSM or Trinity classical or popular music syllabus for students seeking to pass exams, or create a personalised lesson plan for each student looking at various styles of classical, jazz, folk and popular music from outside of a formal syllabus. Building technical and theoretical skills as applied to the guitar will also form a core part of our lessons.

As a guitarist you will face many obstacles and hurdles as you make your journey. I have designed multiple courses that can be modified for each individual to reach their goals as fast as possible and to create a positive atmosphere in every lesson.

I specialise in advanced Classical and Jazz Piano, Composition and Arranging, as well as fundamentals of Theory of Music for students from ABRSM Grade 5 to Diploma level. I offer substantial discounts for families and for bundles of 5 or 10 lessons.

I have a well-equipped studio with a new grand piano as well as other keyboards and music tech gear, and teach both in-person for students living in Edinburgh, and online internationally. As many of my students are from Edinburgh university, where I also teach Orchestration and Screen Composition, daytime lessons can be flexible from week to week.

My classes are helpful to students seeking to pass the higher performance and theory grade examinations, as well as to university undergraduates seeking to fill knowledge gaps and to explore composition and orchestration in greater depth.
