About Me

Hi! I’m Justin, a 17-year-old student with a passion for both music and math. I’ve been playing the drums for several years and love sharing my rhythm and energy with others. I enjoy teaching kids because I believe learning should always be fun, engaging, and confidence-building. Whether it’s helping someone master their first drumbeat or understand a new math concept, I’m patient, encouraging, and always focused on helping each student succeed at their own pace.

Alongside music, I’m also skilled in math and enjoy finding creative, simple ways to explain even the trickiest topics. My lessons combine positivity, structure, and a sense of discovery, so students feel supported and motivated every step of the way.

Above all, I’m known for being trustworthy, responsible, and easy to work with — someone kids feel comfortable learning from and parents can rely on.

Education

I am currently studying Sports Science at Kaetterbeek, where I’m learning about physical performance, health, and the science behind movement. Alongside my academic studies, I have earned a Diploma in Music Theory, which has deepened my understanding of rhythm, composition, and musical structure.

I have been playing the drums for seven years, developing both my technical skills and my passion for music. My experience combines a strong foundation in both sports and the arts, allowing me to bring energy, discipline, and creativity to everything I do — whether it’s performing, teaching, or studying.

Over the past seven years, I’ve developed extensive experience as a drummer, performing local music groups and private settings. My background in music theory allows me to teach rhythm, timing, and coordination with clarity and creativity. I’ve also worked with children and teens, helping them discover the joy of learning through patience, encouragement, and fun, interactive lessons.

In addition to my musical background, my studies in Sports Science at Kaetterbeek have strengthened my understanding of focus, discipline, and teamwork — qualities I bring into every class I teach. I am Thijs (30) an experienced drummer and musician, with a wide range of musical interests. Studying jazz drums under the wings of Lander Gyselinck at the KASK/Conservatory in Ghent. In addition, I have followed masterclasses and lessons from/with Joey Baron (US), Kendrick Scott (US), Corey Fonville (US) and Stéphane Galland (BE). I am also active in various bands/groups.

My lessons, depending on the level, focus on both the fundamental building blocks of drumming and music as a whole. These building blocks together with the student's interests form the curriculum, so that it meets the student's wishes as best as possible. I also teach music theory/music theory. Some aspects of this are also offered during drum lessons.

The course method, inspired by the Agostini school (French method used in French and Belgian academies and conservatories) is divided between technique and drums. At the rate of one session each we will focus once on technique and movements outside the drums (on pads) and the other time on the drums and the application of technique and movements.

-> The technique lessons and the movements will be those of the so-called 'Moeller technique' that I learned through his direct lineage of student.
-> The drum lessons are greatly inspired by the pedagogy of the M.A.I. (Music Academy International - Nancy (fr)) and in particular that of Richard-Paul Morellini, renowned instructor.

The courses are complete, in-depth but above all specifically thought of to be progressive. They are suitable for children from 7 years old as well as adults of all ages.

=> Particular attention is paid to the movements and their correct application, to the total independence of the limbs and finally to an understanding of the rhythm and its theory. My main goal is to give the student complete control behind the drums and skills to be able to self-learn any piece in any musical style. 1 hour of weekly lessons are never enough, they should only be used to fuel the passion that will make you play at home more and more.

On demand or for advancs students:
- I am very passionate about the study of South American rhythms. Due to their complexity, apart from the samba and Baïon ostinatos, they are not included in the program before the advanced level. They can be at the request of the student.
- I am also specialized in metal (musical style) and double pedal. The latter is not included in the program unless requested by the student. The double pedal courses are based on the methodology of Virgil Donati.

Technique:
* Moeller technique (the 'whipping motion' - the Free stroke -Full/Half/Low stroke - accepting the rebound - its application etc.)
* Snare rudiments and their applications through reading systems
* Readings of scores and exercises for the snare drum
* Speed drills
* Military marches
* Control of the different subdivisions (quarter notes - eighth notes - triplets - sixteenth notes - quintuplets - sextuplets - triple eighth notes - nonolets etc.)
* Displacement of accents and polyrhythms
