University Level Pure Mathematics, including Algebra, Analysis, Set theory, and Mathematical Logic
From 46 £ /h
This class is intended to help students studying for a degree in mathematics. I am able to help with a number of topics in pure mathematics, especially those taught in the first and second years of an undergraduate degree. These topics include analysis, abstract algebra, linear algebra, set theory, and mathematical logic. I may also be able to help students studying more advanced courses, say in commutative algebra and algebraic geometry.

About Me
I'm a graduate student in mathematics at the University of Bath. I've always enjoyed maths – it is a beautiful subject that has been a pleasure for me to learn and to teach. Unfortunately, it is sometimes presented as a long list of arbitrary "rules" that seem to have no rhyme or reason to them. My goal in teaching has always been to elucidate why those "rules" work, keeping in mind the student's background knowledge. Although students sometimes find this difficult at first, I find that they get a lot out of it in the long term – for one thing, they become able to independently verify whether or not their work is correct. Seeing the transitions that my students have made has always been rewarding.

Over the summer I will help students consolidate the work they have done in the school year, with the option of extension work that goes beyond the curriculum. We begin with a topic of the student's choosing. After a few sessions, I may suggest topics that I feel could be underlying the student's difficulties. Alternatively, if a student wishes to explore a topic more deeply, then I am more than happy to assist them in this.
