Target: Compose, arrange, orchestrate, mix, edit, and master a score for a short film (5-8 min).

This course provides an overview of the world of film music integrated with reading musical notation and using musical composition software including, but not limited to Logic, Pro Tools, Sibelius, Finale, or Dorico. Many aspects of film music will be discussed, including history, famous composers, the process of film scoring, and how music and its relationship to film have changed throughout the last century. Instructional methods will include reading, lecture, group discussion, projects, and film viewing.
An existing competency in creating music, combined with a thoughtful awareness of drama and human emotion will be critical assets to draw upon from your own background.


You should be comfortable with the features and workings of their DAW (digital audio workstation) of choice, be it Logic, Pro Tools, Reaper, or any of the other programs that can manage a host like Kontakt and MIDI.

You should have the following prerequisite musical and technical skills:

Ability to read music.
Basic experience with MIDI sequencing and digital audio software for producing and finalizing musical mock-ups (MP3) via sample library.
Ability to create final audio mix within a QuickTime movie and submit.
Extra information
Software Requirements:
A full-featured DAW appropriate for MIDI sequencing and scoring to picture (must allow video importing, synchronization with MIDI/audio tracks, and subsequent exporting of video in sync with the final audio mix), such as: Logic Pro 9 (or higher) Pro Tools 10 (or higher), Reaper. You should possess at least an intermediate sequencing skill level with these programs.
Sample libraries (e.g., ESWL, VSL-SE, etc., containing a suitable assortment of orchestral and electronica samples, applicable for dramatic scoring)

I hold studies in engineering and music production issued by the Instituto Tecnológico de Monterrey, Fundación Tónica Guadalajara, and Berklee College of Music. Also, I hold a Master's degree in Music and Sound for Films and Games granted by the University of Hertfordshire, United Kingdom.

I hold an engineering degree and have four years’ experience in audio post-production working in a world class recording studio as senior engineer and manager.
