About Me

I'm 57 and have a lot of experience training adults to use use English effectively for professional and academic work. Although we sometimes work with difficult subjects, I make sure that we enjoy the classes and always a stress-free environment.

Education

I went to school in London and I have a degree in Philosophy and a Master's degree in Linguistics.

This year, I have been taking training courses in using online tuition effectively.

Do you feel that people have problems understanding you? Or perhaps you feel less confident at work due to your accent. As it is not phonetic, English is a tricky language to pronounce!

I am a Native British CELTA qualified English teacher with over 8 years of experience. In the last 5 years, I have helped dozens of students to improve their pronunciation and even develop a British accent.
During these classes, I can help you to do the same!
This takes place through studying sounds, phonics, mouth placement, listening and lots and lots of practice. All classes are tailored to your own pronunciation and accent needs. Learning pronunciation is really fun and can even help you to sound better in your native tongue!

I have had great success with students in helping them to speak much clearer and more authentically. After a good amount of training, some students are even able to pass as native speakers!
Although I am a British English speaker, I do have knowledge of American English accents and can help you to develop a more 'international sound' which may be more suitable for your needs.

I currently have hours available for classes online due to COVID-19 restrictions. Working online via Zoom is great! We can use lots more media tools, focus directly on mouth formation and I have had lots of success with it.

I offer individually tailored lessons in English, drawing on my extensive experience researching and teaching the subject at the University of Cambridge — from which I am about to obtain a PhD, have an MPhil, and where I have for the past almost four years also provided instruction and dissertation supervision to undergraduate students across a wide variety of modules (including both more general courses within literary and linguistic history, theory and analysis, such as 'Practical Criticism & Critical Practice I' and 'II', and more specialist courses within texts and contexts of the period 1830–Present, such as 'English Literature & Its Contexts 1830–1945', 'English Literature & Its Contexts 1870–Present' and others) and assessed applicant entrance examinations (including as part of the 'Cambridge English Language Aptitude Test' and 'Cambridge Modern Languages Aptitude Test').

I am especially capable of not only teaching within the subject (or for the purposes of written and/or oral examinations within it), but also improving students' critical and analytical capabilities, and ensuring they can effectively read, analyse, research and write about texts in the arts and humanities, whether for the purposes of examinations or coursework (having assisted across a number of MA dissertations, BA dissertations, papers and assignments, EPQs, EEs, IAs, and other extended pieces of independent work — from those in literature and language to those in political and social studies, with essential academic skills being, after all, highly transferable).
