I offer individually tailored lessons in English literature, linguistics, language, and/or culture, drawing on my extensive experience researching, teaching and assessing the field at the University of Cambridge — where I have for the past five years of postgraduate research (PhD, MPhil) provided instruction and dissertation supervision to undergraduate students, as well as assessed applicant entrance examinations. In addition to being able to teach modules within literary, linguistic, arts and cultural studies (particularly within the period 1830–Present), I am also capable of imparting and improving students' critical, reading and writing skills more generally, all of which can be transferred across subjects and be of aid with extended pieces of coursework, assignments and examinations alike.
Extra information
Please ensure you have shared all relevant materials (i.e., syllabi, reading lists, assignment or examination specifications etc.) with the tutor prior to the session.
Please also ensure you have your preferred reading and writing tools (i.e., laptop, books, paper, pencils etc.) with you during the session. In the case of online tuition (conducted through Teams), please ensure that you also have a suitable internet connection and are able to access and participate in sessions either through your browser or dedicated application.

About Me
Over the past couple of years at the University of Cambridge, I have specialised in English, undertaking a PhD and an MPhil. Earlier, I attended Utrecht University, completing a BA Hons in comparative literatures, linguistics and languages, which also included research internships in Sheffield and Heidelberg, where I worked on archives in English, German and Dutch. In addition to literary and linguistic studies, I have regularly also crossed into art, history, politics, philosophy and related disciplines, including as part of roles at Cambridge University Press, Edinburgh University Press and Amsterdam University Press.

Tutoring Experience:

At Cambridge, in addition to my own postgraduate research, over the past five years, I have also provided instruction and dissertation supervision to a number of first- through to final-year undergraduate students (predominantly in English Studies, but also extending into Comparative Studies), as well as assisted with assessing and moderating applicant entrance examinations and interviews (including the institution's proprietary CELAT and CMLAT). Outside of the Cambridge supervision system, I have taught and assessed a number of independent adult, postgraduate, undergraduate and secondary school students through various educational initiatives (such as the Cambridge Summer Schools, The Friends of Youth, The Sutton Trust and numerous others). Privately, I offer individually tailored tuition, as well as aid with critical, analytical, reading and writing skills through a number of platforms like this one (among them perhaps most extensively First Tutors, which aims to provide not only school- but also university-level tuition).

Tutoring Approach:

As my work has long been cross-disciplinary and cross-cultural, I can offer individually tailored lessons within a number of subjects in the arts and humanities, along with aid with critical reading, analysis, and writing skills. For those interested in university-level instruction, my postgraduate specialism is in English language, literature and related cultural, social and political contexts of the modern and contemporary periods (that is, 1830–Present), so I can teach within these areas up to especially advanced levels (including for MA and BA dissertations). For those interested in less specialised university-level instruction, or earlier stages of education, I can also offer assistance within all areas I have a postgraduate or undergraduate background in, including additional periods within English Studies (1500–1830), Germanic Studies (particularly 1830–Present, but including 1500–1830), Slavonic Studies (particularly 1830–Present, but including 1500–1830), and areas within political, social and cultural studies, philosophy and history (all potentially up to BA level, depending on the particulars of the course). Because academic skills are highly transferrable across the arts and humanities, over the years, I have been able to assist lots of different students in lots of different disciplines (including those studying for degrees that do not immediately seem particularly related to my own, among them PPE at Oxford, IR at Cambridge, Law at LSE, and many more).

I have particular experience imparting and improving students' critical, analytical, reading and writing skills, all of which can be transferred across subjects and be of aid with extended pieces of coursework, assignments and examinations alike. I assist regularly both at and outside of Cambridge with a wide variety of academic, critical and creative pieces of coursework and independent research (including the occasional PhD dissertation; numerous academic manuscripts, editorial and publishing briefs; MA dissertations and papers; BA dissertations, papers, portfolios and assignments; A-Level EPQs; IB EEs; NEAs; and more). I am also perhaps more capable than most of assisting students from educational backgrounds outside of the UK in adapting to the UK context (having, at this point, been educated across four different educational systems, including the British, which is quite unique in the European context; the German, which is more prototypical of European approaches; and the Dutch, which has served as the foundation for and still has much in common with the American 'Liberal Arts' approach).

Apart from subject- and skills-based instruction, I can also offer help with applications (including to university, school and scholarship programmes) and examination and interview preparation (including for Oxbridge, RG, Ivy League, LERU, and other competitive institutions), having had experience not only marking entrance examinations and interviews, but also having had the entirety of my own studies fully funded through a number of competitive academic awards (including scholarships awarded by the Cambridge Trust, Le Bas Fund, Utrecht Trust, and others).

Tutoring Availabilities

I am available for appointments online (through Teams) and in person in Cambridge (depending on location). I can work very flexible hours around my schedule, especially when working online (from early mornings until late evenings on a number of days throughout the weekdays and weekends) and am also open to inquiries from those who require a more unconventional approach (whether last-minute appointments, late-night availabilities, or other unconventional circumstances often arising from abrupt and imminent deadlines). Please note that, because Apprentus operates on a commission model, all lesson payments must go through the platform.

University English Instructor| Started teaching English 9 years ago| Specializing in Conversational English.

My teaching approach is designed to develop communication skills above all. We watch or read materials, such as videos, articles, stories, poems, caricatures, then discuss them; we act out situations from everyday life; we take positions and practice debates. However, this doesn’t mean that we just practice speaking. I also make sure the learner is not running in circles. I’m here to ensure that they do not keep repeating the same mistakes or keep using the same expressions over and over in conversation.
In order to keep making progress, I take my student on a journey that involves:
• Improving their grammar.
• Fixing their pronunciation.
• Enriching their vocabulary by learning to use new words and common idioms.
By the end of this course, you should be able to speak English fluently and confidently.

PS: Because of my academic specialty, I also help with academic writing and creative writing.

With many years of experience as a private tutor, I work with students from all backgrounds. However, over time, I have developed an approach that is particularly appreciated by seniors and retirees. Why? Because I am convinced that learning a language at this stage of life should first and foremost be a shared pleasure, a window onto the world, and a wonderful way to keep the mind sharp and curious.
My approach: Trust and kindness above all

Many of us have somewhat rigid memories of school learning. With me, forget the stress of mistakes or tedious grammar. My primary goal is to restore your confidence. Whether you're starting from scratch or simply want to refresh your old school memories, I adapt completely to your needs.

What we can explore together:

-Maintaining family ties: Ideal if you have bilingual grandchildren or grandchildren living abroad and you want to share more with them.

-Conversation & Culture: Discuss current events, literature, history or life in Ireland, while enjoying my clear and easy-to-understand native accent.

-Brain gymnastics: Using English as a fun and stimulating tool to maintain memory and cognitive plasticity.

Why choose me?
As a dual American and Swiss national living in Ireland, I bring a unique cultural richness to your life. I have a mastery of all the nuances of the English language, but I also have a perfect understanding of French culture and structure.

Practical and technological aspects:

We'll work together via Zoom or Google Meet, very simple and reliable tools. If you're worried about the technology, don't be: I'll guide you step by step during our first session so you feel completely comfortable on screen. It's much simpler than it seems!

Join me for a friendly and engaging experience, blending Swiss rigor, American optimism, and the legendary warmth of Ireland. Let's transform your English practice into a truly enriching human adventure.

Italian is a rich and beautiful language. Understanding the romance of Italian songs, knowing how to speak with locals, or simply wanting to impress your friends, learning the most beautiful of languages has many benefits.
Having lived in Italy for 2 years myself, my course will be based on concrete conversations and also on contemporary Italian culture.
You will learn to converse using a method that allowed me to become fluent in Italian in 6 months. It's simply a matter of speaking without worrying about mistakes and, above all, with complete confidence. By speaking regularly, even making mistakes, your brain will automatically adapt its language to match that of the tutor (me) and you will learn vocabulary, grammar, etc., much faster.
Of course, preparatory sheets will be sent to you before each lesson so that you don't start from scratch. I will also send you "homework" based on your difficulties and weaknesses.
I'm really looking forward to teaching Italian to motivated students and I'm ready to start tomorrow!

I use engaging, age-appropriate activities and adapt my teaching to each child, providing the right level of challenge and support. My aim is not simply to help children complete their work, but to help them become more confident and independent learners.

Materials:
I provide the learning materials required for each session, tailored to your child’s age, ability and individual learning needs. These may include teacher-created resources, worksheets, reading materials, phonics activities, interactive exercises and practical learning activities. Where appropriate, I may also use digital resources to make sessions engaging and interactive.

Curriculum Flexibility:
Although I have extensive experience teaching the British curriculum, my tutoring is not limited to one curriculum. I welcome children from a range of educational backgrounds and can adapt lessons to support their individual needs, whether they require help with English, mathematics, reading, writing, phonics or science. I also have experience teaching English as a second language (ESL) and can support children who are developing their English language skills alongside their wider learning. I am happy to work alongside your child’s current school programme to reinforce learning, address gaps in understanding or provide additional challenge.

I offer private classes of school revision and English for primary, ESO and batxillerat students, adapted to the level, needs and objectives of each student.

I am a graduate of the Double Degree in Administration and Business Management and Economics from the University of Girona and have various years of experience teaching private classes and working as an English teacher for children and adolescents.

I have studied since I was little at an English school, Saint George's School, which has allowed me to acquire an advanced level of English. I also have the C2 certificate.

In the classes we can work on English (grammar, vocabulary, speaking, writing, reading and listening), prepare for exams, do homework or reinforce other school subjects. The methodology is adapted to each student, with the objective of solving doubts, improving academic results and ensuring confidence and autonomy.
