This course will introduce students to the basic concepts, theories, methods and the major steps involved in conducting both a research study & action research. The areas covered include: the research process and the structure of the enquiry process; different methods of observation and data collection; techniques for analyzing and presenting data and writing the research report. As a result of familiarizing the student with various research approaches, he/she will apply this knowledge to the Belizean society in a course project.

The rationale of this course is to give a well-rounded view of the discipline to students who take only an introductory course; to provide a social science support core course; and to provide, for those who plan to concentrate in the social sciences, the necessary background for further study.

Hence, upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

• Understand the steps involved in conducting a research study.
• Understand the elements of the research design in the social sciences & action research.
• Understand quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis methodologies.
• Develop insightful and practical research questions and hypotheses
• Develop the appropriate presentation and writing skills necessary for the proper dissemination of research findings.
• Identify and explain the major ethical dilemmas of the research process
• Engage in the research process by conducting a research project.

My professional career spanned over fifteen & a half (15 ½) years which entailed one (1) year service as a police officer in the Belize Police Department, six (6) years as a commissioned officer in the Belize Defence Force, three (3) years’ service as a Museum Curator/Coordinator, and over four (4) years of teaching experience at the primary, secondary and tertiary levels. I have completed service within the UN system spanning two and a half (2 ½) years, firstly as the Monitoring & Evaluation Officer with the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GFTAM) and as the Programme Associate and Project Manager of the Democratic Governance, Citizen Security, and Poverty Alleviation Portfolio at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Belize Country Office and have subsequently been recalled to service in the Belize Police Department, which I am currently employed. I believe that my career and experience has equipped me with the necessary skills that would make me be a very much desirable asset. My graduate studies have prepared me with highly specialized analytical skills, concentrating in the formulation of national, regional, and international policies, projects and strategies, both for governmental non-governmental, and inter-governmental organizations. There are two types of approaches to acquiring knowledge:

When asked what year follows 1999, you can immediately answer 2000 without having to think for a long time and, above all, without having memorised each number individually, starting with 1, 2, 3 ... You know that numbers are formed according to a certain pattern. With only ten digits, you can form an infinite number of numbers and always know which number comes next.

When it comes to the alphabet, words and sentences, it's more or less the same, but school pedagogy, school textbooks and regular lessons still follow the rote learning approach. In the lessons I propose, you will learn to use patterns because this is more efficient and faster.

Learning is easy, but unlearning bad habits is extremely difficult. This makes it all the more important to learn the right reflexes as early as possible.

I am Mavi, a physics engineer working at an aerospace company.

My methodology is to base myself on the courses in a structural and clear way, accessible to my learners to give them quality teaching and a total understanding of the courses in a cordial and satisfying atmosphere.
My method is very simple, I start by teaching you the most common and most used words and expressions. Then slowly the formation of sentences, conjugation, grammar but also how to pronounce each word well and know their positions in the sentence.

Wolof is the most spoken language in Senegal, Gambia where it has been enriched with contributions from other dialects, Arabic and French, which remains the official language. It is experiencing cultural expansion in the country and is also present in Gambia and Mauritania.
