Hi, I’m Heewon from South Korea and I currently study music in HKU Conservatory. For about 14 years I have studied various aspects of music, I’ve studied piano, vocals and composition, and now I am studying piano in the jazz and pop course. Not only have I played lots of jazz and pop, I have played lots of classical, neo-soul and gospel, to me it’s important to be well versed in lots of genre’s. How amazing is it to play the music that lives in your head? Piano is by no means difficult, it make’s for a great hobby and is a wonderful stress reliever. My class is open for people of all skill levels and is held in English or Korean. Essential parts of my lessons are: -Tailor-made lessons to suit your skill level and needs. *For beginners we’ll go through basic piano skills, basic music theory and reading sheet music. *If you're an intermediate, you'll be given a class that suits your level, needs and wishes. My name is Vasileios, also known as Billy, and I am a master's student in the Jazz Department at HKU in Applied Science. I am fresh in town, currently pursuing to finish my studies while bringing a rich background in music and education. With nearly 15 years of experience in classical harmony, counterpoint, jazz harmony, and performance, I hold a Bachelor's degree in Jazz Music from the Liszt Ferenc Academy in Budapest, Hungary. My primary instrument is the drums, but I am also proficient in jazz piano, vibraphone, and body percussion In addition to my musical background, I am experienced in Konnakol, the classical Indian rhythmic language, which has further deepened my understanding of rhythm and enhanced my teaching techniques. Over the years, I’ve developed a strong foundation in teaching, with over 5 years of experience in rhythm lab education, body percussion, and leading jam and improvisation workshops for students of all ages. My approach combines technical skills with creative expression, fostering an open and engaging learning environment. I am a positive, calm, open ,focused, and disciplined person who enjoys engaging with students and clients alike. I speak fluent English, Greek, a have a good knowledge of Hungarian, and I just started Dutch lessons to better integrate into the local culture. Learning the Piano can be fun, especially when it is designed to meet your individual needs! Lessons are adapted to each student's preferences, based on their orientation and level, from beginners to advanced students. As a graduate classical pianist and also experienced Jazz musician (currently studying Jazz/Pop Piano in HKU), I can help you work your way around a variety of genres and repertoire in order to achieve your personal goals and express yourself through the art of playing the piano. I can also help singers that want to accompany themselves the most convenient way and also people that would like to use the piano as a tool to write their own music. I use both my own material of sheets and notes that I create specifically for each student, but also several books and a variety of methods. Some basic music theory is usually integrated to the piano lessons I give, in order to have a more complete understanding of the practical concepts but it could also be taught separately.

I teach online via Zoom, using software which allows you to see the exact keys I'm playing on my keyboard. My teaching method is to focus on whatever type of music the student loves most, and to build from there. I believe that many people give up their dream of playing an instrument simply because they aren't inspired enough, so my goal is to instill a love for music, whatever that means personally for each individual student. Everyone learns differently and has their own pace and rhythm. I have some students who like to have a regular weekly or biweekly lesson, and others who just get in touch once in a while when they have digested the previous lesson and feel ready to build on it. Whatever the case, I am very flexible and we can figure out what works best for you. A bit about me: Originally honing my skills on the British jazz scene and holding residencies in restaurants and bars around the country, I then went on to tour the world playing on cruise ships, hotels and festivals. I returned to London to complete my master's in jazz piano at the Guildhall School of Music, and during this time performed regularly at Ronnie Scotts, The Vortex and many other venues across the UK. I then spent two years in South America learning about salsa and Cuban music. I now mainly work as a transcriber, writing sheet music for all instruments including full Big Band scores. I have also worked extensively in musical theatre, most recently as musical director for 'Jersey Boys', and on the first US national tour of 'Summer: the Donna Summer Musical'. The video shown below is from my stint playing and directing 'After Midnight', a show set to the music of the Duke Ellington Big Band.

Would you classify improvisation as composition or performance? Well actually it is both! When you improvise you are composing music on the spot, performing what you have made up at the same time as you have composed it. For many people improvisation is a scary word and having to improvise in a group or band is an alarming prospect. However, this really does not need to be the case. As long as you have a basic knowledge of how to play your instrument you will be able to improvise. Once you know the principle of how chords are formed you will soon be improvising with ease. The key to success is understanding chords. Once you know how chords are formed and know what notes make up a few chords you will be well on your way towards being able to improvise. We will, therefore, start by ensuring a firm knowledge of certain chords. After this we will progress to improvising a simple melody over the top of these chords. The next stage is to start using notes that are not in the chord. The process is then open ended with emphasis on developing the melody. If you play a keyboard instrument you will be able to improvise your own pieces and be able to entertain your friends at a moments notice. On the other hand if you play in a band or a group you will be well equipped to do a real 'jam' session. Whether you play a single line instrument (flute, saxophone, trumpet, violin etc.) or keyboard instruments, this class is for you.
