I love teaching piano and violin and have taught many students, adults and children, beginners to advanced. I have also taught children and adults with learning disabilities. Each lesson is tailored to each individual and pupils can learn to play through classic/rock/pop music. Lessons are fun they also include improvisation and music quizzes and music theory. Grades may also be worked towards and taken if pupil wishes and all my pupils have achieved merits or distinctions.

I have played violin for shows in provincial theatres and in the Millitaire Orchestra at Mansion House, Guildhall, Tower of London and The Painted Hall in Greenwich and also played in various quartets for weddings. About Me

Music theory is an invaluable tool both in the creative process and the analysis of musical pieces. With a good grasp of basic concepts, one is able to both communicate with fellow musicians and take control of their musical journey. It also makes it easier to start learning new instruments. I aim to make learning fun and easy for people of all levels and as a multi-instrumentalist, I will give you practical applications for theoretical concepts. The idea is to give you the knowledge and power to play what you feel.

I am a singing teacher with 20 years experience across multiple genres. I teach all ages and abilities from children just starting out, to seasoned pros looking for audition prep and pre-professional preparing for entrance auditions.

I have a positive, pro-active approach to teaching, focussing on styles of music students prefer to get them interested and then suggesting other songs that might aid a particular technique or stretch and ability. If students are interested in taking exams, I follow ABRSM, LSMD & Trinity examination boards. But they are not a focus.

I follow the ABRSM music theory syllabus for Music Theory, and try to implement it in a practical as well as theoretical fashion. Illustrating musical pieces that a student might be familiar with to highlight a point or suggesting pieces to listen to.

My online teaching room is the same as my in-person teaching room, with full professional set-up. Backing tracks, sheet music and teaching aids are sent ahead of lessons with direction on where material can be purchased/ obtained as well as relative keys and versions.

Classically trained to Grade 8 on the Piano and regularly working with artists in a Recording Studio environment, I'm offering exciting lessons in Piano, Music Production and Composition for ages 11+. **Enhanced DBS Certificate**

Each component can be taught separately (e.g you may simply be interested in Piano lessons) or I can provide a complete course which takes students from an introduction to Piano through to Production and eventually being able to Compose, Produce and Release their own music.

Whichever you choose, the emphasis is on fun lessons which provide practical skills equipping students in the real world.

- Music Production is taught using Pro Tools (The industry standard), Native Instruments and a MIDI controller keyboard
- Students are also able to record vocals within their projects if they wish

Due to my label and agency ownership, I am also able to provide insight into the Music industry including areas such as Music for TV, Film and Advertising which may be useful for GCSE/A-Level Music students.

EARLY CAREER
I worked in London as a session musician and touring drummer and pianist for more than 10 years with Shaw Thing Artist Management. I played with talent including Joy Crookes at much-loved places such as The Roundhouse, Abbey Road and The Edinburgh Festival. I also worked as a private tutor during this time, helping 50+ children and adults learn drums, piano and bass - many of whom got all the way to Grade 8.

TODAY
In 2022 I moved to Brighton for a new musical chapter. I now work as a composer/sound designer and creative director for award-winning artistic projects and brands including premium travel company Kuoni. I’m my happiest when I’m creating and making things happen, co-ordinating talented teams to get the job done.

I also offer a transcription service, delivering detailed scores which I create by ear. You can check out examples of my transcriptions on my YouTube channel.

Finally, I am an examiner for Rock School & Yamaha, assessing students across a range of popular instruments, and continue to teach one-to-one in-person and online.

PROJECTS & AWARDS
I am the producer of a short film titled When We Fell, featuring an original soundtrack released under my artist name Spoon. In 2021-22 it was presented at festivals worldwide, won three awards and was nominated for the Audience Award by the prestigious British Animation Awards.

I have also released a video game that music-lovers will enjoy called Keep The Music Alive, a retro 2D platform game that follows the creative journey of a composer - and features beautiful Contemporary Jazz/Classical tracks.

QUALIFICATIONS
I have a BMus in Music Performance & Production from the London Centre of Contemporary Music (LCCM) and am currently studying an MSc in Music and Sound for Film and Games at the University of Hertfordshire.

I teach the drum kit, piano, theory and composition. I love sharing my passion with my students, supporting and empowering them to become the best they can be. Grades 6-8 practical / theory give you UCAS points equivalent to A levels, and grades 5-6 are regarded as equivalent to GCSE level. To train musicality, I often teach this through the use of Kreutzer and Fiorillo etudes, Dont studies, and also pieces of repertoire catered to the student's musical interests and technical requirements.
– I am open to considering student repertoire suggestions if they are particularly passionate about a certain piece.

Lesson Structure
– Typically violin lessons range in length from 30 minutes to an hour, but I am flexible: I am more than happy to devise a lesson structure that caters for a student's requirements.

I have twenty years experience and many references available from satisfied students over the years. I have published 4 collection so f tune books from simple beginners to advanced Donegal fiddle tunes. I have a teaching Diploma from ceoltas in Dublin which is the main traditional Irish music organisation in Ireland. I learned to teach by ear which is the accepted way of learning folk tunes. I am also happy to teach how to read music however and gear lessons towards the students ability and aspirations.

James is a an experienced piano, guitar, bass teacher and Music graduate that is currently teaching in Brighton and Hove. He has been teaching students of all ages and abilities for several years. He has worked in independent and state schools, accompanied choirs, performed recitals and gigs, and worked as a theatre pianist. I teach violin to beginners and returners. Folk from ireland is my speciality and i have 20 years experience in the field. I have twenty years experience and many references available from satisfied students over the years. I have published 4 collection so f tune books from simple beginners to advanced Donegal fiddle tunes. I have a teaching Diploma from ceoltas in Dublin which is the main traditional Irish music organisation in Ireland. I learned to teach by ear which is the accepted way of learning folk tunes. I am also happy to teach how to read music however and gear lessons towards the students ability and aspirations.

James is a an experienced piano, guitar, bass teacher and Music graduate that is currently teaching in Brighton and Hove. He has been teaching students of all ages and abilities for several years.
