Saxophone lessons for all ages! I have over 5 years of experience teaching saxophone to people from the age of ten to seventy. We go at your pace and we focus on the music. No pressure to do exams or lots of boring technical work. What you want to learn is what will be covered.

Born in Setúbal, Portugal, Diogo commenced his musical studies at the age of ten at the CRS ('Conservatório Regional de Setúbal') in Portugal, from which he was awarded Grade 8 in saxophone. He also has a vast field of working in an orchestral setting, since 2010 I have been doing a lot of internships, such as the 3rd Internship of Palmela Wind Band (Palmela/Setúbal/Portugal), in April 2010; the Wind Orchestra Internship of the Metropolitan School (Lisbon/Portugal), in April 2011; the 5th Symphony Orchestra Festival Art & Cult (Figueira da Foz/Portugal), in July 2012; the 2nd Edition LisbonFilmOrchestra (Valada do Ribatejo/Portugal), in March 2013; the Grand Union Orchestra (Oundle/United Kingdom), in August 2014 and the 1st Internship of the "Ensemble" Symphony Orchestra (Fátima / Portugal), in September 2014, among others. In 2014, Diogo was accepted for undergraduate studies at ESART (‘Escola Superior de Artes Aplicadas’) in Castelo Branco, Portugal, under the tuition of Carlos Canhoto. For his final recital at ESART, Diogo received an outstanding classification of 18 marks (out of 20). Back in Portugal, Diogo participated in several masterclasses with names such as Claude Delangle, Mario Marzi, Henk Van Twillert, José Massarrão, James Houlik, Artur Mendes, António Felipe Belijar, Alexandre Doisy, Hélder Alves, Albert Julià, Jean-Yves Fourmeau, João Pedro Silva Nicolas Prost, Otis Murphy, Michel Supera, Jerome Laran, Fernando Ramos and Timothy McAllister. In 2018 Diogo was awarded the May Edwards Prize for Music and in 2019 his quartet "Alaw Saxophone Quartet" was awarded with the Woodwind Plus Ensemble Prize from the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama. In July of 2019, Diogo finished his Master's Degree in Music Performance at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, under the tuition of Gerard McChrystal. During my time at ESART ('Escola Superior de Artes Aplicadas') in Portugal, I also had the opportunity to gain teaching experience at a music school in Castelo Branco for two years. I found that this teaching project was very important to me, not only on the instrumental and technical side but also on the personal side. As a music teacher, I have thought about and worked hard to develop methods and approaches for working with my students. My firm belief is that one size does not fit all, and while the goals and results are often clear the way to get there is personal and individual. I tailor my lessons to and with my clients in mind - because I care. This personalised approach is married to good quality instruction, ensuring that the basics are taught correctly and with the student's age, style, goals and capacity being considered. I work hard to provide this. I am also open to feedback, clarification, and change in order to get the balance right and encourage an open discourse with our students and student’s parents about this. Recently in the United Kingdom, I have been developing my teaching work and experience at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama in Cardiff since September 2017, with several students obtaining great results in ABRSM Graded examinations.

This is a class for beginners and intermediate students who want to learn or improve their saxophone skills. I will be providing students with exercises to do at home and also any books needed to improve their learning. I can also help students with theory.

I have instructed students of different age groups in saxophone performance and music theory (including counterpoint, harmony and composition) up until university level, in Spain and the UK. After graduating from Cambridge with a double starred first, taking into consideration my academic results and teaching experience, I have also been selected for inclusion in the Supervisor Registry to teach counterpoint and harmony papers. My approach to lessons is very flexible, and I always try to adapt to the needs and qualities of each student. I believe that communication is essential, and at the beginning of each lesson I ask my students if they found my recommendations from the previous lesson helpful and how they see their progress. After this spoken introduction, we proceed to work on some warm-up and technical exercises. Then, we play some studies and pieces, or go over some music theory exercises, trying to apply the advice from the previous lesson and make further improvements. Finally, we conclude the lesson with a summary, listing the main key points and suggestions and comparing our experience to the previous lessons, trying to find a clear sense of progression and a coherent line of work towards a certain goal. This teleological mindset occupies a central position in my methodology, and I always encourage my students to look ahead and plan a series of stimulating events or challenges to look foward to, such as a concert, a recital, a presentation or an exam.

Learning a new instrument is an exciting, incredible skill! The saxophone is a wonderful instrument that not many people know how to play. I can provide a saxophone for you to play so you can try out the instrument before deciding to purchase one. Preferably ages 9 and over as the saxophone is quite heavy. Extra fee per lesson where saxophone hire is needed.

Learn to play to decipher scores and improvise by ear or by reading and analyzing chord charts. This course will adapt to your level of play: simple harmonies for beginners and more complex depending on the degree of mastery of the instrument. This course also includes a thorough introduction to harmony.

Are you a beginner?? No worries: no experience is required! 😁 I can teach you the basics to produce sounds with your saxophone: position of the embouchure (teeth, tongue, lips and vocal cords' position, an element often forgotten), fingerings, use of diafragma,... After the first two lessons spent on the mouthpiece and neck for the sound production, we will immediately start to play some super easy duos together to practice your capacity of listening, pay attention to the other, ear training as well. I normally use the book of Peter Wastall (titled Learn as you play) as support, but it is not mandatory. There are plenty of good books btw! Are you an intermediate / advanced student?? I am sure you can still improve in all the basics, but on a different level. I'll teach you the importance of the "voicing" (technique named by the american saxophonist and pedagogue Donald Sinta) to improve your sound production and projection as well as the capacity of correcting and improving the intonation. You can learn all about phrasing and music interpretation, from tonal music until contemporary atonal compositions. And still, you can improve your playing together, practicing in duo on different aspects like tuning, balance, interpretation, performance etc. Book a lesson and try! We follow a working method where you will continuously and deeply develop your musicality, way of playing, expressiveness and technique. -------------------------------------------------- ---------------------- Raúl is a Spanish saxophonist who finished his DIDACTIC MASTER in 2018 at the École Supérieure des Arts in Mons. Previously, he also completed a MASTER OF INTERPRETATION at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels (2015-2017) in the class of Alain Crepin and Simon Diricq. He studied at the "Musikene" (Higher Conservatory of Music of the Basque Country) with Eric Devallon, Tomás Jérez, Antonio Felipe Belijar and Miguel Ángel Lorente. Passionate about multidisciplinary artistic creation, he thinks of the mixing of all the arts in the same show as an aesthetic goal. This type of research could be observed in his project for his final master's recital in Brussels where he created a project based on Maslow's theory of the hierarchy of human needs where he mixed live, recorded music, dance, light shows and effects under the name: “according to Maslow... ” In terms of his career as a concert artist, he has played in different ensembles (solo performances, duo, trio, quartet, orchestra...) and different countries such as Japan (Artisanal Musical Fair "Suono Italia" 2010), Belgium (Festival Musiq3 2016), Artonov Festival at BOZAR in 2016...), France (Dax chamber music festival 2011) or Spain (Music Festival “Quincena Musical” 2015, Aste Nagusia 2015, Heineken Jazzaldia 2014, Festival Kutxa 2015, Intercentros Melómano 2010).
