May and June 2026: In this course, you will learn a range of linguistic methods and learn the terms used for describing a specific aspect of language or phenomenon (lexis, morphemes, and 'telegraphic stage' to give a few examples). The course requires you to explore your own data using quantitative and qualitative analysis (eg: how frequently are slang phrases used? Are there new auxiliaries being created?). No historical linguistics or literature is involved, but language change or specific traits will be sampled via your own data collection (if this is what is demanded in your course). As many students need to present a "year abroad" dissertation at University level (3rd year in the UK of a Modern Languages or Linguistics Undergraduate course) I can help you to research and structure your year abroad work, both in English (Linguistics) and Romance languages (French, Italian, Spanish). The topics that have arisen from recent discussions with students relate to French Caribbean writing, Italian resistance and reprisals in Rome (Fosse Ardiatine), and Spanish Etica franquista in films (among others). I have supported dissertation and thesis students from 2005, as well as granting informal help while I was a postgraduate student of Linguistics at UCL (this includes Institute of Education, 2000-2005). In essence, I can offer help because I have gone through this requirement myself (Aix-en-Provence for French BA, Berlin for Linguistics). Former students have requested this support for: Italian, French, Spanish and Linguistics & Phonetics. Outcomes: BA MFL students have progressed to an MA after their final year of study, or attained Firsts at Cambridge (and proceeded to a career in the City). As summers are now a challenge, and the dissertations need to be in by September (at least in England) I can help you with both your writing, research and oral exam. The year abroad really comes to an end in August, the worst time to be thinking about writing and research. I cannot change the weather but can make your path to a good degree smoother.

A professionally trained theatre director, I have made a career out of working with text by bringing it to life. As a tutor, I look to find ways of helping students do just this. In my classes I work with students to unlock the texts they are studying - honing their analytical skills, providing them with a deeper thematic understanding in order to achieve their academic objectives. English Literature, though, is both a subject for school and for life and I believe the best way of achieving top grades is to cultivate a genuine excitement about literature - from Shakespeare to Steinbeck. A philologist with MPhil degree from Cambridge University and PhD from the Russian University of Humanities, I have been teaching Russian and English, as well as humanities, since the early 2000s, both offline (at the time it was the only way!) and online. Background in journalism and wide international experience I lived and worked in India and in the United States before moving to the UK have helped me to familiarize with different educational systems and taught me how to work with people of various backgrounds, cultures and interests. Working with both adults and children, I am always looking for ways to arouse students' interest in a subject and encourage them to ask questions. Each student has unique needs, so all my classes are tailored, and I am doing my best to make our joint learning adventure as exciting as possible. I am eternally grateful to my own school and university teachers, as well as to private tutors. Without them my dreams about Cambridge University, traveling the world and having all those experiences that I have now would remain only dreams.
