The piano is one of the most universal instruments. As a piano player you can be your own orchestra and play as a soloist, but you can also make beautiful music or accompany ensembles, in any musical style.

In my lessons I want to offer the student a broad foundation on the piano:

learn to read notes, play and interpret existing pieces of music
learn to listen carefully, play it by ear and after a while learn to make your own piano part
playing with chord progressions, gaining insight into harmony and chord theory
learn to improvise and come up with your own pieces
teamwork, because this way you learn to listen even better

My own roots lie in classical music, which provides a good technical basis for the instrument.

Ever since I was a student, I have enjoyed making music the most when you discover various music genres (such as classical, jazz, pop, world music) for yourself. This way you learn to connect these different musical worlds. As a teacher, I want to pass on all these possibilities to the student, so that after playing the piano for a while, he/she can determine his/her own path.

About Me

Renate Jörg started out as a classical piano lady. One day during her studies, she was given an accordion on her lap, which became her second instrument. About the same time she discovered the back door of the theater (artist's entrance). She composed and made music for and with musical theater groups.

Renate was the resident musician at Draaitheater De Overkant for many years, she toured Dutch theaters with the formation KAAL (2nd prize Amsterdam Kleinkunstfestival) and participated in productions of Kindertheater Basta and Theater Van Santen. She made children's theater with her own Theater Group Roosanne, wrote music for the Hoorspelfabriek and was a musician with Trio d'Affaire for many years. She was the regular accordionist of the cabaret duo Matroesjka and played with Dorine van der Klei. Renate currently plays with Trio Bartolussi.

She released her own song program on CD: UND SCHIEFE SCHEITEL KÄMMT DER WIND. She also played this program live in small halls: a “one-woman musical theater based on classical chamber music” (Ntb Muziekwereld)

Education

I studied music education at LMU Munich with main instrument classical piano. Already during my student years I came into contact with many different music styles from world music through the accordion, later also with jazz. Of course, I also apply this knowledge to the piano.

From my studio at the Berlagebrug, I give Piano lessons to beginners and (semi) advanced students. The lessons take place on a Yamaha wing and when a piece is well under control, we can make a professional recording of it.

I graduated in 1992 as a musician from the Hilversum Conservatory (nowadays Conservatory of Amsterdam) in the direction of light music, or jazz and pop. So with me, you learn not only to read notes but also chord schemes and - if you want - improvisation. Or we search together for a song that you would like to play and make a nice adaptation of it. Together we first look at exactly what you want to learn and align the curriculum.

I can also help you learn how to compose and produce. I work with Pro Tools and Logic Pro X.

With my ten years of teaching experience and active concert practice, I would like to help you further with your piano skills. The lessons will delve into both the technical and musical aspects of piano playing, theory, reading music, harmony, ear training, technique, pedagogy and more. I'm passionate about traversing genres since I have studied both jazz and classical to a high level, making this class perfect for creative pianists and composers who want to go beyond reading music off a piece of paper. Trinity/ABRSM curriculum upto Grade 8, can also be optionally included. Teaching effective practice methods is a priority, ensuring students progress confidently and without leaning on me. Please note, I only teach in person to maintain high standards of guidance in technique. This is not possible via video conferencing. Since everyone asks: yes, I did study at Berklee College of Music as an undergraduate for some time, and I do help students out with their audition preparation for various music colleges!
