Welcome to my piano teaching studio! I am a professional pianist offering private piano and theory lessons for students of all levels. As a pianist with over 14 years of teaching experience in Europe and the USA, as well as over 23 years of playing/performing, I enjoy motivating my students with music of their own preferred style and interest, whether that be classical or contemporary. My main goal is to promote a positive experience and love for music-making during the learning process. If the student is interested in a more structured approach, I guide preparation for grades 1-8 of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) piano and music theory exams where my students consistently receive highest marks. I also have successful experience preparing students for conservatory entrance auditions, masterclasses, and competitions in the Europe, the USA, India, and Canada. We have class concerts at Pianos Maene for interested students twice per year. I am happy to provide either a more relaxed or a serious approach to learning piano, we simply need to discuss the personal goals and preferences of each student.

My own studies are as follows: I have obtained two postgraduate performance degrees at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp: "Concertsoloist" in Piano Performance and "Chamber Music” (under the guidance of esteemed professor Sergei Edelmann). Prior to this, I received my Bachelor and Masters degrees in Piano Performance/Music from the University of Minnesota - Minneapolis (with Prof. Lydia Artymiw) and Texas Christian University, Fort Worth (with Dr. Tamas Ungar). My experience includes collaboration with many different instrumentalists and singers, performing as a soloist and collaborative member in several orchestras, and receiving top prizes in several competitions. While maintaining my performance and recording career in Belgium at present, I am developing my private music studio in central Antwerp and look forward to meeting new students.

French student who just moved to Antwerp, I've been giving lessons for years in France and it was such a pleasure, that I want to experience it here again. Specialized in Romanticism/Modern, I also improvise.

I can teach the good habits as a pianist to never hurt yourself and to quickly develop a good technique and musicality: Position, gesture, and practice tools.

I also love to link the pieces with images, paintings, and movies, to create a whole connected world of senses and art.

In piano lessons, we use the book method of Notus or Hal Leonard.
Everything is explained step by step and you gradually learn to read music and know the piano.

At the start of our lessons we'll take a look at what is important to you. What goals do you want to set, and what feels achievable and comfortable?
We set long-term goals of, for example, a year. Completely tailored to where you are at, right now.

During the lessons I am patient, motivating, encouraging, and complimenting. I'll point out what could be better, and also pay attention to how you can play more easily. And much more. Tailored to your needs and wishes.

Nice to meet you :D

My name is Melvin, and I'm a pianist/composer and music theorist who loves to guide people with a passion for music! In my lessons, I teach three different subjects in which I specialize and perhaps can help you improve your skills as a musician.

If you want to play the piano intuitively, without thinking about it, or interpret scores, then Piano + Improvisation is the course for you! Together, we'll break through the boundaries of traditional sheet music and teach you to unleash your inner musicality. Whether you're a beginning pianist longing to improvise simple melodies or an experienced player looking to explore new expressive paths, I'll inspire and encourage you to broaden your musical horizons.

Have you always wanted to write your own music, but don't know how to get started? Then together we'll push your creative boundaries and help you develop your own musical masterpieces. Whether you're a budding composer taking your first steps or an experienced musician looking for new inspiration, I'm here to guide and inspire you on your unique composition journey.

Need some theory because you don't understand certain elements of music? No worries! Step by step, we'll explore the fundamentals of music theory together, delving into notes, chords, rhythm, and structure. You'll discover how all these elements work together to create masterpieces, or to better understand scores as a musician.

I'm looking forward to meeting you :D

Melvin

I teach piano, composition, and creative work with sound for beginners, intermediate, and advanced students.

With over 15 years of teaching experience and a strong background as a concert pianist and composer, I am currently finishing my Master’s degree in Composition at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp . I combine classical training with contemporary and experimental music practices.

My piano lessons focus not only on technique, but on developing musical thinking and individuality. In composition, I help students explore both traditional structures and modern approaches, including sound-based composition, timbre, and texture.

I also work with students interested in sound art, electronic music, or creative listening.

Each lesson is tailored to the student — whether you want to start from zero, improve your skills, or develop your own artistic direction.
