About Me
I have a broad knowledge of guitar repertoire by having played a wide range of works, from classical guitar works of Renaissance and Baroque to Modern and Contemporary music for electric and acoustic guitar.
During my RWCMD years, I have also attended several teaching and safeguarding courses. In my third year, I have completed a teaching skills module with 78/100. My tutor was renowned teacher, educator, and leader of the National Young Guitar Ensemble, Helen Sanderson.
It is necessary to properly balance a lesson between the amount of time the student actually spends playing, and when they are being explained how to play. It is fundamental to do many exercises which involve similar patterns, so that the muscles of the right hand can absorb them. As someone who has suffered from performing-related injuries, guitar technique is paramount. A few guidelines for the technique of each hand are enough for a beginner to progressively get used to playing the instrument. All my lessons include music theory. It is important that the students understand the fundamentals, at least, of the theory behind what they are doing, not just learn the notions necessary to pass an exam. They not only make a student a better musician, but also improve their practice drastically, speeding up their learning. Furthermore, they need to understand what makes a successful practice session. To do this, it is important to establish the ‘boring’, but effective, methods of practice. As the students will see the results of them, they will also find they are playing more satisfyingly and having more fun.
