Music lessons in Piano (up to Grade 8) or Singing (up to Grade 5)

Having had 15 years of piano lessons, one thing has been constant through the performances and exams I have taken - Enjoyment. This is a key aspect that the students enjoy playing the instrument and are motivated to keep on playing and learning new pieces or techniques. Piano has often in my life been my biggest hobby and an escape from other things going on, and this is something I hope to provide to anyone interested in learning this wonderful instrument. I am able to teach all abilities ranging from causal lessons up to Grade 8 standard for Piano.

Having had 9 years of singing within Chapel, University and Scottish Choirs, I have been able to cover a wide range of repertoire and techniques on how to improve my singing style. During both school and university, Singing within choirs was my biggest extra-curricular, and I aim to teach lessons in a way that can encourage budding singers to grow in their confidence and ability. Singing is a social and enjoyable experience, and this is the key thing in lessons that students choose to learn songs and techniques they are keen to cover and feel engaged when improving their singing. I am able to teach all abilities ranging from causal lessons up to Grade 5 standard for Singing.

I have both an ARSM Diploma and an ATCL Associate's Degree from ABRSM and Trinity College London, meaning I play up to Undergraduate standard. Combined with being a Graduate in Mathematics and Music, which has included opportunities to teach in my degree for Mathematics, means I have knowledge over how to ensure lessons remain engaging and students are kept motivated. I am a member of the University of Edinburgh's choir and NYCOS National Choir, while also having a Choral Scholarship at Church of the Sacred Heart and Old Saint Paul's Church. Involvement within these, along with past choirs such as the Fettes College Chapel Choir, has meant I am a strong singer and know how to get the best out of a singing lesson. Helping out with conducting across some of these choirs has given me experience of teaching Music, and alongside teaching Mathematics to primary schools, I can use these skills of being organised and having good communication to help make my lessons engaging.

About Me

Studying Mathematics and Music at the University of Edinburgh has been an enjoyable and social experience, and through both the courses I have taken within Statistics, Pure and Applied Maths, along with extra-curricular commitments such as presenting an exhibit at the Edinburgh Science Festival, I have experience in how to communicate efficiently and be organised when planning and conducting a lesson. I also am adept at time management and being adaptable through the range of other extra-curricular activities I have partaken in, in particular Music, which will allow me to conduct lessons in a friendly and fun manner. Music is a big interest of mine, and having performed Piano up to Undergraduate standard while completing my university degree, I am able to multitask well and cover students of varying abilities at the same time. Singing in various choirs and acapella groups in the city also means I am confident in my teaching style, which helps to ensure students are taught well. Being involved in a range of different sports ranging from Hockey to Korfball means I can deal with a wide range of scenarios in a professional manner when teaching.

My teaching style is to make it as engaging for the student as possible while covering the material in a way that motivates them to pursue Mathematics or Music further.

Piano lessons - music theory and harmony - for any level
I teach for all levels, from children starting from zero to students who want to prepare certifications at the Conservatories, passing through amateurs or simply curious of any age. I firmly believe in the importance of knowing how to read music and this is exactly what I teach first, obviously adapting the method to the age of my students: knowing how to read music is knowing one more language, which, if learned well, won’t ever be forgotten (like riding a bicycle!) and it is an invaluable wealth. Starting from that point I teach the position of the hand, the arm and the whole body at the piano, the fundamentals of the piano technique (giving great importance to the percussive movement of the finger and the distribution of weight), the understanding of musical language, the expression of the personality through the keyboard, the search for touch and knowledge of piano repertoire.

Music and Drumming: Becoming a Confident Personality Behind the Kit
Becoming a confident musician is a skill that requires discipline, dedication and hard work. However I strongly believe that whether you wish to progress your skills on an instrument to a professional level, simply get the most out of playing In a band with friends or jamming along to your favourite playlists, the art of learning an instrument is an incredibly rewarding skill. In our lessons we will focus on building a solid foundation across the basics of playing the Drum Kit. We will discover the rich and diverse history of the instrument and move through the jazz, funk, rock and pop era's of music. While I am happy to tailor all of these lessons to the student's needs, I do believe having a basic knowledge of where the instrument and it's vocabulary came from is essential and will have a positive impact on the students playing. Listening is important! We will work through a number of landmark recordings that carve the path of the Drum Kit's evolution and continue the listening process all the way to your favourite songs and how the drums affect that music and the rest of the band! I am also happy to work through ABRSM, Trinity Guildhall and/or Rockschool exam grades. Music is all about communication, and being able to fluently communicate ideas on any instrument requires time and practice. However, like with your very first English lessons in school, over time you can develop the skill of communication to a point where you can exchange many different ideas and create interesting conversations (this time between musical instruments rather than your friends in the pub!). Although I understand music is a not a career for everyone, I strongly believe that learning how to play any instrument properly with discipline and good practice will enhance your life is more ways than anyone who doesn't play music will understand.

Getting to Grips with Music Theory is simpler than you think!
The theory of everything tends to be really scary and music theory can be too. I am very keen to make music theory easy for everyone. For some people there is only one way to tackle the unmentionable but I believe there are many different approaches and one of them will click with you. It is simply finding out what is best for each person. Once we find the key we can unlock the problems that have puzzled you for ages. Music theory needs to be more than a requirement, it needs to be the way to really appreciate the music you are playing. Certain aspects can also lead to additional practical skills such as improvisation which can be very useful as well as very enjoyable. Whether you want to understand a particular aspect of music theory or If you struggle with music theory in general, then this is the class for you - why not give it a try?
