Max for Live is a tool bundled with Ableton Live that lets you program your own instruments and effects without writing a single line of code. With this course you will get a better understanding of the components of a synthesizer, learn the fundamentals of some of the most known and recognizable effects and learn some basic notions of programming.

Max uses a visual approach to programming, meaning you do not have to right codes to make your own plugins, instead you connect blocks that each have a specific function into an interconnected network that make a functioning instrument or effect.

By learning how to make your own plugin you will also gain a better understanding of how digital audio works, making you more aware of what your are doing in Ableton and more efficient.

About Me

I graduated from Jazz Piano and Electronic Music at the Royal Conservatoire of the Hague and I have taught piano for more than 10 years now. On top of being an experienced music educator, I am also a touring and recording musician, mainly with the alternative rock band Etienne Machine. I have been improvising and composing my own music for as long as I can remember and I love transmitting the knowledge and skills I have accumulated over the years.

I am very passionate about teaching and hope to inspire my students to love music just as much as I do! This course is just what you need.

In this class, you will learn:
- how to transform sound using analogue and digital techniques.
- how to create sound structures and organise them in a DAW enviroment to compose a piece of music.
- how to record, edit and mix sounds using both conventional and experimental techniques.

Aspiring musicians with a background in any genre can take advantage of this course. A formal education in music or experience with electronic music composition are not required to follow. However, you should be unafraid of experimenting with sound and music technology! Each class is customized to meet the needs of the individual student in an innovative and flexible way! The course can also serve as a preparation for applying to several Dutch educational programmes related to electronic music composition (Institute of Sonology, HKU, ArtEZ, etc.).

The class is focused on small assignments that help the student develop a sense of orientation and set goals.

Making your own music is a very personal practice that demands attention and care. It is comforting to learn the craft and to know what to focus on now and what to deal later in the process. This way you can let your creativity lead the way and take care of the technical details after on.

With this course, you'll learn the KNOW-HOW of making your own music from start to finish. We will go through; inspiration, composing, arranging, production, mixing, mastering, and release. You will understand the conceptual frame and the technical craft behind them. In no time you will start applying them to your own workflow as well, no matter what genre you are interested in, electronic, pop, jazz, indie, experimental, classical, and so on.

I try to make sure all my students leave the class with a new idea, a fascination, or a new question in their minds about whatever they want to do but most importantly with a smile. The music gathers people, and so is making it. An accessible instrument and a chameleon, the recorder opens the doors to all styles: classical music and particularly early music, but also traditional music (French, Irish...), jazz, contemporary...
It is learned young, even very young, or later, when the desire takes you and curiosity torments you! A particularly sociable instrument, it likes to play with the family, with other flutes, to integrate into various ensembles, or even to accompany itself on a keyboard... Students have different aspirations and needs, but in my lessons we can focus on rhythmic variation, tempo, comping, improvisation, ear training, chords, phrasing, articulation, expression - all while learning repertoire. That is how it all comes together, therefore I encourage my students to learn their favourite songs and also repertoire that will strengthen less strong areas of their playing. This means if you want to learn how to play pocket we focus on funk rhythms, if you want to learn how to play straight groove we focus on bossa or latin etc.

With a Bachelor in Jazz Guitar in the pocket - that’s what I mostly play, we can dig into chord melody, single line playing, repertoire and comping in a variety of styles within the jazz idiom.

The first lesson will be a checkup where you are as a student in your musical development, thereafter I will ask about your goals and aspirations and what you’re currently doing to reach them. My role is to oversee this process and share what has helped me in my musical development. I believe instrument lessons need to be practical and be based off concrete exercises that will help you reach the next level. For something to manifest into your playing you have to first get whatever you’re learning into your muscle memory - practice slowly with metronome, continuous repetition over a period of time, then the brain have a greater chance of obtaining the skill. Second step is to gradually increase the tempo and play with a good time feel, by doing this you will have what you’ve learnt in your hands. There are no shortcuts when learning a skill, you simply cannot buy it - you have to earn it!

Hi! I'm Demetrio, a musician and composer from Italy.

From when I was 8 years old, I've been fully immersed in music, starting out with flute, to then switch to drums and to my first conservatory course in classical percussion. Already in the final periods of this study, I began to fall in love with jazz music and with the instrument of the vibraphone, and in September 2022 I moved to the Netherlands to follow my second bachelor course in the Royal Conservatoire of The Hague, this time in jazz vibraphone. At the moment I'm in my second Master's year of The Hague's conservatory, on my way to graduation at the end of this academic year.

In this class, you'll be able to learn and face many aspects of music, from composing and starting out with the idea of song writing, to diving into music theory, both classical and jazz, and improvisation, as a general topic and in the context of jazz music. All of the topics that I present are offered to give students of any level either a solid base for music theory and improvisation, or to consolidate even more and strenghten your skills on more advanced aspects of music.

I'm very passionate about listening, sharing, directing and finding solutions to problems that anyone in a music learning journey can face, starting from myself. I'm also very patient and I provide clear and practical explanations, which I believe is very needed in such a confusing and aerial topic as music can be.
