About Me

I am a Jazz, soul-pop saxophone player ...and a music teacher!

As a musician for as long as I can remember, I have always been keen to teach others what I have learned.

I am a saxophonist, songwriter, and soul-jazz singer. I have a classical piano training and I play drums too. This allows me to play along with my students and to surround them very early in an inspiring musical atmosphere.

To be beautiful, music must be conceived clearly and simply, whatever the musician's level. It is also quite simply that it must be taught and learned.

Education

Diploma of the academy of music theory and classical piano
I studied at the Brussels Conservatory with Steven Houben, and with Erwin Vann in the Dutch-speaking section. Private lessons with Kurt Van Herck.
Some lessons with Chris Potter in New York in 1999.

Experience / Qualifications

I've been teaching in private schools and at home since 1993!

Here's a tiny professional bio of myself ;-)

LAURENT is a saxophone player, a singer-songwriter from Brussels,
mainly in the Soul Jazz idiom. Self-taught musician at first, he also learned with the best musicians around, from Brussels to New-York. For about 20 years, he’s been successfully directing his own projects, featuring the most soulful jazz musicians of Belgium and abroad. He played a major role in the great bands of Daniel Romeo and Marc Lelangue.
The free-lance part of his career let him play with names such as Fred Wesley, Boney M, George Mc Crae, Percy Sledge, and on a very special evening with James Brown.

Have you always wanted to try playing the piano, but never found the time? Maybe you have played in the past but are looking for new input? Looking for a music teacher that is friendly, experienced, down to earth, and competent in all genres, from classical and jazz music to rock and pop? My name is Joseph, I'm 28 years old and live in Brussels. I am offering individual, or duo, piano lessons (or music theory, harmony, combo, etc). I have a master degree in classical music and one in jazz, and 10 years experience playing live music, recording, and teaching. I have taught pupils of all ages and levels. Drum lessons in English and Italian, all levels welcome!
Hi everybody! I am Umberto, Italian professional drummer based in Brussel. I have a Bachelor in Jazz Drums and I have just achieved my Master in Jazz Drums at the Koninklijk Conservatorium Brussel. I have 8 years of experience in music teaching, both private and in schools. I would like to teach drums and share with you this musical world. About the lessons, my method really changes according to the needs of the student. It's very important for me to know a student and what he/she wants to achieve in order to create a specific program that suits him/her. All levels are welcome: from the beginner to the more advanced, I am open to give lessons to everyone who wants to explore the drums and the beauty of music. I am ready to work on all aspects of the drums: techniques, rudiments, grooves, fills, timing, musicianship. As a drummer I have a lot of experience in many different music genres, both teaching and playing: from jazz to funk, from rock to pop, and also folk music in case you want to have a more percussive approach. Last but not least, my idea as a teacher is to create a friendly enviroment: having fun is the most important thing in order to learn in a natural and effective way! I am available to give lessons at my place. I have a rehearsal room with 2 drumsets, one for the student and one for me, so to show clearly and immediatly all the concepts. I have a PA system as well, so to be able to playalong with music. I can also come to the house of the student, but that would be a secondary option. For this last option, I will charge some extras for travel cost and time spent. I don't have a car, so I will travel by public transport :)

Professional jazz musician teaching jazz, blues, funk, R&B, pop, rock, latin and classical piano.
I teach online via Zoom, using software which allows you to see the exact keys I'm playing on my keyboard. My teaching method is to focus on whatever type of music the student loves most, and to build from there. I believe that many people give up their dream of playing an instrument simply because they aren't inspired enough, so my goal is to instill a love for music, whatever that means personally for each individual student. Everyone learns differently and has their own pace and rhythm. I have some students who like to have a regular weekly or biweekly lesson, and others who just get in touch once in a while when they have digested the previous lesson and feel ready to build on it. Whatever the case, I am very flexible and we can figure out what works best for you. A bit about me: Originally honing my skills on the British jazz scene and holding residencies in restaurants and bars around the country, I then went on to tour the world playing on cruise ships, hotels and festivals. I returned to London to complete my master's in jazz piano at the Guildhall School of Music, and during this time performed regularly at Ronnie Scotts, The Vortex and many other venues across the UK. I then spent two years in South America learning about salsa and Cuban music. I now mainly work as a transcriber, writing sheet music for all instruments including full Big Band scores. I have also worked extensively in musical theatre, most recently as musical director for 'Jersey Boys', and on the first US national tour of 'Summer: the Donna Summer Musical'. The video shown below is from my stint playing and directing 'After Midnight', a show set to the music of the Duke Ellington Big Band.

Improvisation for beginners and intermediates (any instrument)
Would you classify improvisation as composition or performance? Well actually it is both! When you improvise you are composing music on the spot, performing what you have made up at the same time as you have composed it. For many people improvisation is a scary word and having to improvise in a group or band is an alarming prospect. However, this really does not need to be the case. As long as you have a basic knowledge of how to play your instrument you will be able to improvise. Once you know the principle of how chords are formed you will soon be improvising with ease. The key to success is understanding chords. Once you know how chords are formed and know what notes make up a few chords you will be well on your way towards being able to improvise. We will, therefore, start by ensuring a firm knowledge of certain chords. After this we will progress to improvising a simple melody over the top of these chords. The next stage is to start using notes that are not in the chord. The process is then open ended with emphasis on developing the melody. If you play a keyboard instrument you will be able to improvise your own pieces and be able to entertain your friends at a moments notice. On the other hand if you play in a band or a group you will be well equipped to do a real 'jam' session. Whether you play a single line instrument (flute, saxophone, trumpet, violin etc.) or keyboard instruments, this class is for you.

We can learn classical music, but also other styles such as pop. I also offer lessons focused on music theory if that is what you are looking for! If you want to learn to play the cello or improve your skills do not hesitate to write me!
