This class is for anyone who wishes to practice or improve their English speaking, listening, reading and writing abilities. The class will focus on the practical, everyday use of English, with up-to-date, real-world material (such as recent news articles) and coursebooks. If preferred, the class can be strictly conversation. However, the usual process will involve one-to-one tasks, understanding vocabulary and grammar, and periodic progress reviews.

I'm a native English speaker from Canada, currently living in Prague, with many years of ESL and university teaching experience. I can help you gain confidence and improve skills through stimulating, content-based lessons with varieties of topics, activities and materials, designed and adapted to your level, interests, and requirements, and what you and I together feel we want and need to work on flexibly week by week. I work with intermediate to advanced students (B1-C2), with most of my students interested in conversation/communication English (focusing on speaking and listening skills, and including improving vocabulary, fluency, pronunciation, and grammar), but I’m also happy to work with students on writing and reading. My teaching style is engaging, creative and friendly—I try to make every lesson an interesting and enjoyable one. But I’m also professional, prepared, organized, and reliable. I rarely use a textbook—some students enjoy primarily having conversation without other resources needed, but I also often use songs, videos, and texts of various kinds to provide a wide variety of topics, new vocabulary, varieties of listening practice, etc., and I also use varieties of ESL material from various internet sources as well.

With over 12 years of experience in chemistry, I am currently a final year Ph.D. student at Charles University in Prague and doing research at Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry at Czech Academy of Sciences. As a part of this course, I take responsibility to make sure that the most elemental form of chemistry is understood by the student in the easiest way using examples from daily life. Chemistry is all around us. We as part of nature are made of chemicals in one form or other. Therefore, none of us can live without a knowledge in Chemistry. Since everything happening around us in the universe is because of one or the other form of a chemical reaction (slow or fast), the reason behind them are to be truly revealed before understanding what is happening e.g. in our kitchen while cooking food or while drinking cola or juice.

I believe effective language learning can only happen when students feel relaxed, and when they are interested in the material. It is very important that students speak as much as possible during the lesson, and are not afraid to make mistakes! Making mistakes is normal when learning a language. Therefore, I try to make lessons fun and engaging. To do this, I conduct a needs analysis of each student during the first session; this allows me to discover exactly what each new student’s needs are, which areas they need to improve, and what topics they are interested in. Some students are afraid of grammar, but I try to present it in a fun way – so that you don’t actually realise you’re studying grammar until it’s too late!

Did you know that Spanish is the second most spoken language in the world in terms of native speakers? What does this mean? That Spanish is a language that will allow you to access many opportunities, both personal and professional. This learning space will be adapted to what the student is looking for, being able to have a much more conversational or more theoretical dynamic if that is what is needed. The Spanish I will teach is Castilian, in case you don't know the difference, we can speak about it, but is the dialect spoken in Spain.
