Hello!

I am a musician offering tutorials in piano, trumpet, cornet, harmony, counterpoint, theory, and other general music-y things in English! I’m also available to direct rehearsals and concerts.

I believe playing the piano should be fun and enjoyable, as it often has been for me. Whilst I give guidance on repertoire choice, I like students to decide and be passionate about which pieces they play.

Please contact me to chat about your/ your child’s musical goals and ambitions and to arrange a lesson. I am able to travel to homes and offices and have a flexible schedule to meet your needs! I have also taught over Skype in the past, where there’s the option of screen sharing, making it possible to demonstrate things on screen.

About Me

Huddersfield born composer Thomas has worked with organizations such as the BBC Symphony Orchestra, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Nieuw Ensemble, Aurora Orchestra, Red Note Ensemble, European Youth Brass Band, and Neon - Choir for Newest Music. Furthermore, his music has been performed at the BBC Proms and broadcast on national radio in both the UK and Netherlands. In 2016 musicians joined together to perform in a concert containing a selection of his chamber music and in 2017 his music formed part of the medals ceremonies of the Total BWF Badminton World Championships and Scottish Open Badminton Grand Prix, the former tournament broadcast to over 0.6 billion people worldwide. HRH Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex was in attendance and requested to meet Thomas, as he’d heard another of his works in 2012. At the age of 15 he arranged music for Britain’s Got Talent winner Paul Potts.

Whilst Thomas believes it important to write what one wishes to hear, his music aims to be appealing to general audiences and “accessible”, yet still original and innovative. He regularly experiments with jazz harmony and polystylism and has enjoyed writing works which have a sense of energy and forward momentum throughout, as well as ones of a more relaxed nature. His current interests include using tonal harmony in new ways and bright sounds, in terms of both harmony and timbre. One of his idols is the Austrian composer HK Gruber, whose music he has recently completed a paper on.

Thomas studied with Richard Ayres and Willem Jeths at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam (generously supported by Moose International) following completion of undergraduate studies at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Prior to this, he was a student at Chetham’s School of Music, at which time he won the BBC Proms Inspire Young Composers’ Competition and was awarded the Douglas Steele Award.

Conducting is another passion of Thomas’s; he enjoys directing his own works as well as others with student, professional, youth, and amateur ensembles and orchestras, including championship section brass bands. He grew up playing cornet and trumpet in brass bands, big bands, orchestras, and other ensembles. He also plays piano, has appeared as a percussionist at events such as the British and Scottish Open Brass Band Championships, and tutors a wide range of students. Mentoring is also part of his role as a BBC Proms Inspire Ambassador. He enjoys undertaking arts leadership roles and in 2017 ran a composers’ orchestral workshop at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.

“Tom kept me stimulated and inspired in moments when I would run out of ideas, and created structure and direction in moments when I felt unsure with what to do.”

What Inspires Me?

As a composer, I am inspired by many people from many different eras. As part of my master's, I recently completed a paper on the harmony within orchestral music by living Austrian composer HK Gruber and my current composition work includes experimenting with jazz harmony. Another modern composer who has inspired me is Alfred Schnittke. I enjoy his harsh juxtaposition of styles.

When learning about traditional tonal harmony and counterpoint, the music of J.S. Bach is the place to start and it has had a big influence on my contemporary concert work, although of course there are many composers - Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Reger, to name a few - who followed Bach and developed tonal language further, using it in different ways.

As a player, I play a wide range of music from different eras. A large chunk of my background was playing cornet in brass bands, although I have also played orchestral, big band, and chamber music. My favorite trumpet player is probably Allen Vizzutti, a very versatile classical and jazz American musician, with phenomenal technical abilities.

He is great teacher. My kids really enjoyed his lessons! I highly recommend him.
Hello! I am a musician offering tutorials in piano, trumpet, cornet, harmony, counterpoint, theory, and other general music-y things in English! I’m also available to direct rehearsals and concerts. Music Theory is important to all classical musicians. It not only compliments their practical activities, it is essential in being able to read and understand the music they play. Topics covered will include clefs, time signatures (simple, compound, irregular, and irrational - e.g. 7/6 - for students who want a challenge), chords, keys, rhythms, and harmony. Once the basics are mastered, students begin to focus more on harmony and counterpoint, examining and learning to write chorales in the style of J.S. Bach, before moving on to fugues and looking at the ways in which other composers have used harmony. I also have knowledge of jazz harmony and am able to discuss this with students if they wish. Contrary to popular belief, music theory isn't boring! Thank you for reading and I hope to hear from you soon! Hello! I am a musician offering tutorials in piano, trumpet, cornet, harmony, counterpoint, theory, and other general music-y things in English! I’m also available to direct rehearsals and concerts. As a composer I have a diverse range of skills. Whilst most of my work is contemporary classical concert music, I have a good grounding in tonal harmony and am experienced in writing music more typical of past eras and for events such as opening ceremonies and medals ceremonies. I also have knowledge of jazz, having worked in this genre. Lessons comprise of me examining the student's work, discussing it with them (how they've written it, what decisions they've made, what they wish the music to do and be), as well as discussing any suggestions I have to further enhance the effectiveness of the music and their ideas. Lessons can also involve examining works by other composers, giving the student inspiration and knowledge, as well as learning about different compositional techniques, which can include ways to deal with harmony, rhythm, texture, structure, and development of ideas. Oboe lessons/Reeds lessons/Piano lessons. To all levels and ages
for my Oboe lessons I like to focus on depending on the personal needs of the student are breathing technique, finger skills, posture and creativity. Most importantly though I try to convey my passion for this unique instrument and support my student on his personal journey of learning and growth. In order to create beautiful music, you will not only have to master playing the instrument but also making high quality reeds. Thats why also offer lessons on the craft of reed making, from the basics of making your first reed to perfecting concert grade reeds. My piano lessons cover a wide range of musical styles from Classical music, through Jazz all the way to contemporary pop music, depending on the students interests. Depending on the needs of the student the teaching can include and focus on different technical aspects such as finger flexibility, music theory or improvisation.

Zara
Classical singing and piano lessons for all levels and ages
Dear parents and students, I am a professional singer and pianist from Hong Kong, having more than 10 years of experience in music teaching. I graduated from the Chinese University of Hong Kong with a Bachelor degree in music (with honors), Koninklijk Conservatorium Brussel with a Master degree in classical singing (with distinction) and also the Post-master degree in classical singing (with distinction). I am currently a professional opera singer working mainly in Germany with conductors and directors from houses and studios such as Theater Rudolstadt, Lyric Opera Studio Weimar, Komische Oper Berlin and Royal Opera House. I am a holder of Licentiate Trinity College of London (LTCL) vocal and piano performance certificates, both with distinctions (97/100 for voice and 90/100 for piano). Besides, I am a holder of DipABRSM piano performance certificate and ABRSM Grade 8 music theory certificate with merit. I have been giving private singing and piano lessons to students ranging from 3 to 50 years of age. Very happily, all of them had obtained distinctions at their ABRSM exams, some of them also won first prize at competitions. However, I do not teach music because of this. Distinctions and prizes are bonuses, but most importantly, I hope my students can enjoy and understand music. For beginners, I focus very much on building basic techniques. Alongside with that, I spend a little time on every lesson for ear training, music theory, music history, sight-reading/sight-singing, music composition, instrumentation and conducting, depending on the interest of the student. For more advanced students, I teach more about musicality and presentation. I aim to provide all-round knowledge to my students so they will be well equipped for future development. For piano students who are at the beginning of their music journey, I use a lot of creative ways to teach basic knowledge such as rhythm and fingering. These creative ways include colorful presentation slides, arranging a tailor-made version of the songs they like and introducing fun games to keep them motivated. Each student will get something different because everyone is different. As an instructor of vocal masterclasses for choir students in Hong Kong, I see myself as the person who: -- opens the door of fundamental vocal techniques for the students; -- influences them to be confident; -- shows them the beauty of human voice and vocal music; -- teaches them to embrace the others without judgement. My way and attitude of teaching was proved to be successful with a lot of positive feedback. I tend to plan my classes in detail, and give notes to students every lesson. In this case, the students can follow the lessons easily and make the best out of their time. I do not make my students always say "yes" and "okay", I like to work with them and they are always welcome to tell me their needs. Since I grew up at one of the best English schools in Hong Kong (Belilios Public School) and I have a lot of English-speaking students, I can communicate in English very fluently without accent. Besides English, Cantonese and Mandarin Chinese are my mother tongues. I am also knowledgeable in German, French and Italian. I am confident that I will provide my students the best learning experience.

Cello and/or Piano lessons in The Hague for all ages and levels
Every student needs a teacher that gives personal attention and is flexible, which is why I always adapt to the individual needs and different speeds of learning. Everyone is capable of making music, we only need to develop our skills and with the right tools the world of music opens up. I am deeply convinced that music is something that we all need and find the most comforting in the trickiest situations. Music helps to express the emotions and cello is an instrument that is immensely similar to the human voice. I hope that every student of mine will find their voice and reveal their feelings while playing cello. Let’s meet in our first lesson and enjoy the world of music!

Piano Lessons in The Hague Area - Beginners and Amateurs - Classical, Pop, Improvisation and Composition
I am a professional classical pianist, accompanist, singer, and composer with a Bachelor's Degree from the Conservatorium van Amsterdam and a Master's Degree at the Royal Conservatorium in the Hague. For 6 years now, I have been teaching students of all levels between 5 and 60 years old. Lessons are based on your level, interests, and goals. Together we can find out if you are keener on classical repertoire, or if you want to play your favorite pop-music, some beautiful soundtrack from a movie you like or compose/improvise new pieces. With my experience in teaching diverse genres, I will help you explore the music that you like. The central pillars I always work with are technique and creativity, which are much more connected than you would expect! While we advance, I also introduce the basics (or more deeply, if you are interested) of music theory to learn to communicate with each other in musical terms (chords, keys, score reading, etc.). And above all, the goal is to enjoy and have fun!

Ioanna
Klavierunterricht / Piano lessons. All levels are welcome to join.
In my style of teaching, I approach the challenges together with my students, working as a team. This way, the study progress allows for an individual pace while ensuring understanding due to frequent and implicit feedback. Having fun and learning exemplary pieces are considered as necessary as training technical fundamentals and musical understanding. The entire program is individually composed to meet each student’s interests and needs, so that any level and kind of student is ensured to find a fit. `` Learning the piano is a fascinating lifelong process. It can be compared to learning a new language from the very beginning, step by step. I love guiding students, who share the same passion with me through this wonderful experience of self-discovery. All levels and ages (6 -100 years old) are welcome to my class`

Piano Lessons for beginners and intermediate. All styles and genres
Piano lessons for beginners and for those who would like to play as a hobby. I created a special program for students who want to play any kind of music (popular, jazz, classical), but can't spend a lot of time studying. You will learn how to read and play sheet music and chords. We cover the basics very fast so you will start playing your favorite songs right away. I also cover some theory that helps a better understanding of what you are playing. In this way the skills you get can then be used for playing other instruments, composing and songwriting.

I'm a teacher with a master's degree in music, and I have played piano for at least 20 years now. As a musician I work in classical piano and composition. My classes are for anyone who wishes to improve his/her level on this instrument, or to learn it from scratch. I focus on strongly developing musical reading at the same time as piano technique, to achieve an improvement in level quickly and effectively. During the COVID-19 sanitary emergency, I only teach online classes,

Learn Piano and Improvisation and practice other languages :)
The most important matter that I could write here about is my passion to teach. I've been teaching already for more than 10 years, from kids to adults. I'm a classical pianist, but I am opened to other musical styles. What I want you to get from your lessons with me, is not only a huge knowledge of theorical stuff or a great technique, I would like to show you my musical world, the imagination and inner exploration that is required to understand and to love music in a whole new level. Once you have found them, it will be very hard to quit playing! The class duration: You can choose! 20 minutes (Great for the youngest : 3 years old) 30 minutes (Ideal for young beginners from 4 years old) 45 minutes (Intermediate+ adult beginners) 1 hour (Intermediate and combined with some Music Theory) I use different methods depending on: 1) The goals of my student 2) The language that we will use on class 3) Age and musical preferences: I start to teach children from 3 years old, we make games and they learn to play through musical stories that I have created throughout my pedagogical career.
