My piano lessons are built around one goal: awakening a genuine desire to explore music, and above all, helping each student develop their own taste for musical expression and the technical tools to master them, both mechanical and mental.

Music is a unique challenge that gives us a new way of seeing ourselves, teaching patience, self-belief, and problem-solving along the way. I pair this outlook with solid technical grounding, adapted to any level of experience, and lessons shaped around each student's own musical goals. I regularly bring in musical analysis and theory, which often unlocks the "secrets" hiding inside the pieces we play.

As a symphonic conductor and choral singer, I bring a broader, more complete musical perspective into every lesson. I'm also particularly effective with children — I have a strong track record of making music genuinely interesting to them and building real curiosity rather than rote practice.

I've been teaching piano for over a decade, working with students from age 2 to 70, amateurs and professionals alike. As a performing musician, I've taken part in international competitions and hold a degree from the University of York.

I teach in Portuguese, English, German, French, Italian, and Spanish, and offer lessons at my home, at the student's home, or online — whatever works best for you.

About Me

Hi!

My name is Tomás, I am an orchestral conductor, pianist and singer with over a decade of teaching experience. You can expect from me a dedication to helping you understand how you can be at your best and most in tune with your musical goals. With children, I prioritise giving my pupils the technical and emotional tools to problem solve and express themselves at their instrument. With adults I do the same, yet focus also on helping the student understand themselves.
My principles are of respect towards the student's progress and discipline. It is this way that I have helped children overcome their fear of playing and making mistakes, and how I have helped touring professionals with technical challenges.

I am a jazz musician with a lot of intenational performances in my career, I have played all through Europe and in China with amazing musicians such as Peter Evans, Shane Endsley, Ohad Talmor, André Fernandes, Jesús Santandreu, Javier Subatín, Óscar Graça, João Paulo Esteves-da-Silva, Maria Villanueva and others.
Aside from that, I have also participated in professional theatre companies as an orchestra member and also in projects outside of the Jazz world.

I offer dynamic and customized lessons to my students, regardless of their age and proficiency , I try to communicate and share with them the necessary skills and tools needed to become a better musician, and also to cultivate a broader and simultaneously deeper understanding of music and art in general.

Or maybe you don't know what your goal is yet, but are fond of the sound of the piano and want to dive into this wonderful instrument. I try as much as possible to tailor the work with each individual student aiming at the goals set and the student's musical tastes. This becomes more the case the higher the student's level of experience. Nevertheless, beginners are also encouraged to suggest music for themselves to learn.

The work on pieces is combined with other important activities designed to develop finger dexterity, hand coordination, rhythmic sense, music reading, playing by ear, etc. The Cortot, Hanon and scale exercises are some of my frequent choices for the technical work.

For young beginners, I defend a no-book approach during the first 2 or 3 months, for three main reasons: it makes learning more fun, it unlocks our creative potential and it allows us to explore the instrument rather confidently and freely. Instead of learning how to read right from the start, students have the opportunity to play games, listen to music, sing, compose, and improvise over backing tracks, developing the core skills necessary for any musical activity later on. After this period, it is then time to introduce them to a method book. The one I recommend the most is Piano Safari.

For teenage and adult beginners, the activities described above are selected and adjusted, and theory concepts may be introduced at an earlier stage. If desired, graded level series such as the RSL Classical or Contemporary Piano, among others, may be opted for.

This class is for anyone who wants to get into piano or for getting their kids into piano. I teach in a relaxed but thorough way to help build skills for the independent student. No previous knowledge is required and we we learn a broad range of musical skills from the more traditional music reading and comprehension to the more modern jazz piano and reading chord symbols. My focus will be creating sustainable learning by creating a personalized and enjoyable plan for each student. Classes are taught in English but also speak moderate Portuguese to help if needed.
