Hi everybody!

I am Umberto, Italian professional drummer based in Brussel. I have a Bachelor in Jazz Drums and I have just achieved my Master in Jazz Drums at the Koninklijk Conservatorium Brussel. I have 8 years of experience in music teaching, both private and in schools. I would like to teach drums and share with you this musical world.

About the lessons, my method really changes according to the needs of the student. It's very important for me to know a student and what he/she wants to achieve in order to create a specific program that suits him/her.

All levels are welcome: from the beginner to the more advanced, I am open to give lessons to everyone who wants to explore the drums and the beauty of music.

I am ready to work on all aspects of the drums: techniques, rudiments, grooves, fills, timing, musicianship.

As a drummer I have a lot of experience in many different music genres, both teaching and playing: from jazz to funk, from rock to pop, and also folk music in case you want to have a more percussive approach.

Last but not least, my idea as a teacher is to create a friendly enviroment: having fun is the most important thing in order to learn in a natural and effective way!

I am available to give lessons at my place. I have a rehearsal room with 2 drumsets, one for the student and one for me, so to show clearly and immediatly all the concepts. I have a PA system as well, so to be able to playalong with music. I can also come to the house of the student, but that would be a secondary option. For this last option, I will charge some extras for travel cost and time spent.

I don't have a car, so I will travel by public transport :)

About Me

Born in Treviglio (Italy) the 5-5-1993, Umberto starts to play drums at 6 years old, playing pop, rock and funk styles in the following years and eventually transitioning into jazz. In 2011, at 18 years old, he was the first Italian drummer to get the Scuderie Capitani Drum Academy Diploma with the score of 30/30 cum laude, which marked the beginning of his professional career in music and allowed him to teach drums academically, both in music schools and privately. In 2013 he was awarded the Batteria Maxxima Diploma in the Accademia del Suono in Milano, studying with the great jazz drummer Maxx Furian (Randy Brecker, Mike Mainieri, ...).

In 2016 he obtained his Bachelor Diploma in Jazz Drums with the score of 110/110 in the city of Brescia (Italy), where he had the opportunity to share the stage with Giovanni Falzone (Francesco Bearzatti, Massimo Colombo, ...), Fausto Beccalossi (Al di Meola, ...), Giulio Corini (Enrico Rava, John Abercrombie, ...), Stefano D’Anna (Ben Monder, Larry Grenadier, …), Carlo Morena (Kenny Wheeler, Paolo Fresu, …), Tino Tracanna ( Franco D’ Andrea, Dave Liebman, …) and many more.

He moved to the Maastricht (the Netherlands) in 2017, where he commenced an Erasmus education abroad at Conservatorium Maastricht where he played live concerts with WDR Big Band trumpeter Rob Bruynen and he recorded music with the great Belgian trumpet player Carlo Nardozza. In summer 2018 he was the drummer of the National Italian Orchestra of Italian Conservatories, where he had the opportunity to share the stage with John Surman (Dave Holland , Jack Dejohnette, …) and play in Tel Aviv (Israel) for the Italian Embassy (among many other performances).

He moved to Belgium in september 2018, where he attended the Master program at the Koninklijk Conservatorium of Brussels. In the period of his two year master studies, he has played in the So What’s Next Festival 2019 in Eindhoven (the Netherlands) with his project Supernova and he also competed in the finals of the professional category of the Maastricht Jazz Awards 2019 with South African bassist Ildo Nandja (John Funkhouser, …). In june 2020 he has received his Master Diploma in Jazz Drums with distinction studying with the highly regarded drummer Stephane Galland (Joe Zawinul,Tigran Hamasyan, Ibrahim Maalouf, ...).

Umberto has played with: Fausto Beccalossi (Al di Meola), Rob Bruynen (WDR Big Band), Giulio Corini (Enrico Rava, John Abercrombie, ...), Stefano D’Anna (Ben Monder, Larry Grenadier, …), Giovanni Falzone (Francesco Bearzatti, Massimo Colombo, …), Carlo Morena (Kenny Wheeler, Paolo Fresu, …), Tino Tracanna ( Franco D’ Andrea, Dave Liebman, …), John Surman (Dave Holland , Jack Dejohnette, …). He has different music projects between Italy and Belgium and he is working as a drum teacher in both countries.

I am Thijs (30) an experienced drummer and musician, with a wide range of musical interests. Studying jazz drums under the wings of Lander Gyselinck at the KASK/Conservatory in Ghent. In addition, I have followed masterclasses and lessons from/with Joey Baron (US), Kendrick Scott (US), Corey Fonville (US) and Stéphane Galland (BE). I am also active in various bands/groups.

My lessons, depending on the level, focus on both the fundamental building blocks of drumming and music as a whole. These building blocks together with the student's interests form the curriculum, so that it meets the student's wishes as best as possible. I also teach music theory/music theory. Some aspects of this are also offered during drum lessons.

This class is aimed for children between the ages of 8-13 who would like to begin developing their vocal technique and find their own unique voice early whilst working in a group scenario. My Group Singing workshop is a mixture of improvisation and technique. Add to that the fun singing with other like-children and you’re looking at a contender for the highlight of your week!

This class is designed to build confidence and promote individual personal and social development and is taught in a fun yet disciplined way. With a minimum of 4 students and a maximum of 6 students per class each student will have the opportunity to perform a solo song and also a group song each week with individual feed back and technique advice each week.

I am a professional drummer, composer, and performer based in Brussels, with an active career in jazz, improvised, and creative music across Europe.

After studying music at a university in Japan, I came to Belgium to further my studies and specialize more in the saxophone.

Having lived in Belgium for several years, I give lessons in French or English, according to your preference.

For lessons, all you need to do is bring your saxophone.
