Composition lessons with Dr Jonathan (in person or online)

*** Composition lessons with Dr Jonathan ***

I am a composer and educator based in South-East London who has recently obtained a Ph.D. in composition from the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, having previously studied at Cambridge and the Royal Academy of Music. My passion for music feeds directly into my passion for teaching, and I hope that I can inspire as many people as possible to deepen their love of music by learning to understand it from the inside out.

I have been teaching music for over 10 years both in schools and as a private tutor, ranging from interactive workshops with primary students to university-level one-to-one composition. I have previously been the resident composition teacher at Eton College (2015-17) and City of London School for Girls (2017-20), as well as delivering workshops at schools around the country in a visiting capacity. I am as comfortable working with students taking their very first steps in theory and composition as I am with those who are more advanced and can teach across a variety of styles and genres including classical, jazz, rock, and musical theatre.

As a tutor, I always seek a student-led approach, adapting content and delivery to individual tutees’ needs. Above all, whether in theory or composition, I always try to enthuse students by conveying my own love of music and encouraging theirs. No element of music or musical development can be considered in isolation, and so I seek to link up whatever a student is working on with their wider musicianship and listening – classical or otherwise – to put things into context. Another important part of my teaching practice is preparing tailor-made resources for students which are theirs to keep, ensuring that any material covered can be revised and consolidated.

The core of my composition teaching is of course discussing and dissecting students’ music, but alongside this go technical exercises, score analysis, music history and live listening which feedback into the compositional process and put the music written into context. Most importantly, I meet students on their own stylistic ground, helping them to achieve the best possible realization of their personal artistic ambition while also encouraging them to listen and explore as widely as possible.

Time is split between teaching key concepts (including providing tailor-made resources) and looking through student work, always balancing the discussion between aspects of the work which are more or less successful. While most of my theory students take ABRSM theory grades, I also teach theory and musicianship more broadly without focusing on specific exams and boards.

Musical theory or/and practice of flute and piano.
I'm an ex musical student and i come from a 8 years long training, of all the major branches of the subject. I can give an understanding of the musical score and consequential reading of musical pieces to play, after learning, with flute or keyboard(piano). The musical composition is to be divided in classical composition with counterpoints and all it's restricted rules, or the way it is conceived today, wich would mostly be understanding of the whole package of Music.. through experiencing the art of creation with software like sibelius, flstudio or reaper. if you have other needs in the field ask anytime

Learn the bass differently and intuitively
This course is above all there to make you want to play bass, let it be fun! It will be based on the practice of the instrument, on the understanding and the role of the bass. The theory will be based on the progress of the practice. Step by step, practice and theory will thus be complementary, and will necessarily be useful! Have you always dreamed of being able to play bass? it's time to get started! Let the magic of music take hold of you and become the accomplished bassist you always wanted to be! Possibility of offering this course to one of your loved ones, a very appreciated gift for people who would like to embark on a musical adventure!

You will learn to create music in all kinds of styles, languages and eras. Every kind is literally every kind of musical language that humanity has developed, from Africa to Asia to Europe, from the Renaissance to our times and also, thinking about the future. You will learn what you want to learn. Without limit of knowledge. In record time, that's how I learned. You will learn to read and write music and if you already know, you will learn to see it in other ways. Analyze and write music both by hand and with a score editor (Sibelius). You will learn to produce music in DAWs (digital audio stations, such as Pro Tools or Reaper or similar). You will learn the four steps (recording, editing, mixing and mastering) or if you know them, you will improve them. Do you want to compose a symphony? A reggaeton song? Know how free impro or jazz or techno 'work'? Do you want to give wings to your artistic and musical thinking? Secrets that very few musicians know will be at your entire disposal for an extraordinary price. 83 complete albums produced (and many of them, where the piano plays, performed) by me. 778 tracks available on all digital platforms. More than 1000 musical works/pieces composed. Creator, leader and manager of several musical projects. Finalist candidate for the Princess of Girona Awards, grants and awards for musical composition. If you are already a music professional, regardless of fame or wealth, and want to learn more and know more and know more about the art of music, contact me. You will not be indifferent at all.

Learn Piano and Improvisation and practice other languages :)
The most important matter that I could write here about is my passion to teach. I've been teaching already for more than 10 years, from kids to adults. I'm a classical pianist, but I am opened to other musical styles. What I want you to get from your lessons with me, is not only a huge knowledge of theorical stuff or a great technique, I would like to show you my musical world, the imagination and inner exploration that is required to understand and to love music in a whole new level. Once you have found them, it will be very hard to quit playing! The class duration: You can choose! 20 minutes (Great for the youngest : 3 years old) 30 minutes (Ideal for young beginners from 4 years old) 45 minutes (Intermediate+ adult beginners) 1 hour (Intermediate and combined with some Music Theory) I use different methods depending on: 1) The goals of my student 2) The language that we will use on class 3) Age and musical preferences: I start to teach children from 3 years old, we make games and they learn to play through musical stories that I have created throughout my pedagogical career.
