Jazz Guitar, Improvisation & Composition Lessons with a Professional Performer
From 66.12 £ /h
Hi, I’m Mateus – Guitarist, Composer & Teacher
I’m a professional jazz guitarist from Portugal with a strong background in both classical and jazz music. Over the years, I’ve performed at some of Portugal’s biggest jazz festivals such as EDP Cool Jazz, Funchal Jazz Festival, and Caldas da Rainha Jazz Festival, and I’ve also had the honor of winning international prizes, including the Jarek Śmietana Jazz Guitar Competition in Poland.
Alongside performing, I have a real passion for teaching guitar. I’ve been giving private lessons, workshops, and masterclasses to students of all levels, helping them build solid technique, develop their creativity, and express themselves through music. Whether you’re just starting out or looking to dive deeper into improvisation, jazz harmony, composition, or repertoire, I adapt my lessons to your goals and pace.
Currently, I’m based in Basel, Switzerland, where I’m studying for my Master’s degree in jazz performance at Jazzcampus, working with world-class musicians like Larry Grenadier, Jorge Rossy, Kris Davis, and Wolfgang Muthspiel.
Beyond music, I enjoy reading, traveling, and exploring new cultures – things that often inspire my playing and teaching.
If you’d like to learn guitar in a way that’s fun, personalized, and musically enriching, I’d be happy to help you on your journey!
I have been teaching guitar for several years, working with students of all ages and levels – from complete beginners to advanced musicians preparing for auditions and performances. My teaching experience includes private lessons, workshops, and masterclasses, both in Portugal and abroad.
My academic background combines a classical foundation with a strong focus on jazz performance and improvisation. I studied classical guitar at the Conservatory of Santa Comba Dão, later graduating from the Coimbra Conservatory of Music in the professional jazz program, and completing a Bachelor’s degree in Jazz Guitar at the Lisbon College of Music.
As a teacher, I adapt my lessons to each student’s goals. My methodology combines:
Building a solid technical foundation (right- and left-hand coordination, tone, articulation).
Developing rhythm, harmony, and improvisation skills through practical exercises.
Learning songs and repertoire that connect directly with the student’s interests (jazz, pop, rock, bossa nova, or classical).
Encouraging creativity and self-expression, so students not only play but also find their own musical voice.
Integrating ear training and theory in a clear and practical way, always linked to the guitar.
I believe that music should be both enjoyable and challenging, and I strive to create a positive environment where students feel inspired to practice, explore, and grow as musicians.

About Me
I began my classical guitar studies at the Conservatory of Santa Comba Dão, where I developed my musicality, instrumental technique, ear training, and music theory skills. I completed both my conservatory education and basic schooling in 2017, and applied to two jazz high schools: the Coimbra Music Conservatory and JOBRA in Estarreja. I was admitted to both and chose to study at the Coimbra Conservatory of Music, where I spent three years in the professional jazz instrumentalist program, graduating in 2020.
That same year, I was admitted to the Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa (Lisbon College of Music), where I completed my bachelor’s degree in jazz in July 2023. During my three years in Lisbon, I performed extensively, both as a sideman and with my own trio, appearing at major jazz festivals in Portugal such as EDP Cool Jazz, Caldas da Rainha Jazz Festival, and Funchal Jazz.
In November 2021, at just 19 years old, I was one of the winners of the Jarek Śmietana International Jazz Guitar Competition, where the judging panel included renowned guitarist Wolfgang Muthspiel.
“Mateus’ sensitive and charismatic performance earned him an invitation from Wnuk to perform at the Kraków Summer Jazz Festival next summer. The 19-year-old from Coimbra, Portugal is developing his own unique style, and this performance will definitely be one to look out for.” — London Jazz News
In December 2021, during my second year of university, I was invited to represent the Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa at Lisbon’s main jazz festival, Festa do Jazz. In July 2023, I was once again invited by the director of the Śmietana Competition to perform two concerts with my trio at the Kraków International Jazz Festival.
I also played at the Funchal Jazz Festival in both 2022 and 2023 with Ricardo Dias, Rafael Andrade, and the Madalena Caldeira Quartet, sharing the stage with artists such as Joel Ross, Immanuel Wilkins, Simon Moullier, and Cécile McLorin Salvant.
Also in July 2023, I was one of the winners of the Prémio Jovens Músicos (Young Musicians Prize) in Portugal with the Mateus Organ Trio, alongside Hugo Lobo (Hammond organ) and Francisco Gomes (drums). In October 2023, I returned to the Śmietana Competition, this time earning second prize, awarded by Peter Bernstein and French guitarist Romain Pilon.
In 2024, I continued to perform at major jazz festivals while also leading workshops, masterclasses, and private lessons. That same year, I recorded my debut album, featuring original compositions and classic standards from the American songbook, scheduled for release in September 2025.
Beyond music, I enjoy reading, traveling, and exploring new cultures, all of which inspire my playing and teaching. My goal as a teacher is to create a fun, motivating, and inspiring environment, helping students build confidence, develop their creativity, and enjoy the process of making music.
